I thought the same thing until I bought a pair. Took them out on my normal hike and wow, what a huge difference they made. Bought another pair too. Smartwool (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000HZXY1U/ref=oh_details_o06_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). They're nice, fit my big old feet nicely.
I've worn these in the winter, spring and into this summer and I've never gotten "sweat foot". I do wear breathable boots though, but these socks are great.
