Call me obsessive but I ordered the following items to protect the backseat. This is what it looks like:

I lay this extender on the backseat first. It fills the gap and allows my dog to utilize the entire backseat space:

Dog owners - how do you protect your doors? I just installed these in my 3, but when my windows roll up after closing the door, they push those cards up with them, leaving them barely hanging in there.

I got these to protect the seats and doors. I've got a 45+lb mix who drooled a lot in the car when he was younger, and these were great protection. I slide a cushion or two under the seat protector to give him a boost up (short legs) so he can actually stick his face out the window.

AND if he's in the back, I always put on the child locks, since it's just a button (not a lever) and much easier for a dog to accidentally hit with paws on the armrest.
