I agree with the others that a motion detector and possibly a glass break sensor covering this area might be better here. I've read that burglars usually just smash basement windows rather than try to open and crawl through.

If you really want to use a contact sensor here, you might be able to use a thinner, rare earth magnet in place of the provided magnet. Something like this might work if you have enough clearance.
