Gay people throughout history have wanted to blend in, even in cities that had a gay community in the 30s, 40s and 50s. It's only in the last 30 years or so that more feminine gay men have found acceptance in the gay community at large.

There was such a stigma about gay men in early decades and an assumption by straight people that gay men wanted to be women, it caused some gay men to shun feminine guys.

I've read his book The Gay Metropolis: The Landmark History of Gay Life in America. It's a very interesting -- and occasionally erotic -- read, even if a number of things are presented matter-of-factly when their actual historical truth is in question.

I recommend reading The Gay Metropolis if you have some time. It gives a pretty good decade by decade accounting of Gay history from 1940 upward.
