Your studs should be 16 on center. If you anchor into them, there is no need for a backing board.

Here is the kit we bought from Amazon: kit

Here is pic of our install

We have 1 bracket screwed into each king stud, 1 into the 2x6 header, and 1 into each of the first 2 studs immediately to left of door opening.

Excellent hardware. Very high quality. Would recommend.

If you ever go for it, I highly recommend building your own doors. I had all the pieces cut for free at Home Depot and literally all that was left was to sand, glue, and paint. This is the sliding door hardware I used, making the total cost for two rails and two doors a little over $300. The rafters aren't functional but they sure do lend themselves to the overall aesthetic. Thanks for your comments!

It depends on the mounting hardware for the track you purchased. There is a stud on the left side of that door floor to ceiling and the track will have to go to that stud in order for the door to shut all the way. It would be helpful to have a link or pictures of the track you purchased. Worst case drill a few new holes or return for a track with more flexible mounting options. Something like http://www.amazon.com/WoodenSlidingDoor-Hardware-Interior-Sliding-Hardware-Stainless/dp/B00BGGI5WW/ would work with no modification (although its ugly as sin) but you can mount the supports where you have studs and then attach the track to it.
