If you want decent sound for <$50, go with Chinese IEMs. They're worth their weight in gold IMO. I'll leave it up to you to read reviews to see which one is right for you, though the three below are well regarded by the community at /r/headphones.

  • KZ ZS3 ($24)

  • KZ ZST ($28)

  • KZ ATE ($23)

If you're cool with buying from Amazon.com and possibly paying duties, though, then go for the Tennmak Pros ($30 US). In general, Amazon.com has a much wider variety of choices regarding headphones/earphones, and much better pricing, but you'll definitely have to deal with shipping and the shit that comes with buying stuff not from Canada (don't you love paying an extra $20 on shit you buy from the US?).

If you just want earbuds (not in-ears), then go with the VE Monks. They're $16, cheap, and sound decent.

EDIT: Also, if you want to know what I use, I typically wear Shure SE215s with the include Shure foam tips, or if I'm alone, Koss Porta Pros. Both sound decent, and the Shures are fantastic for isolation so I don't have to hear screaming/music/loud yelling when I'm trying to study at 11 pm (they're literally earplugs when I have low music on), but are over your budget of $50.

Earphone: VE Monks - Haven't really tried this pero sobrang recommended siya among audiopile groups. Around 400-500 pesos.

You want the VE Monk Plus.

I'm in the same boat as you where I recently had to let my day 1 AirPods go. 15m battery life on one side. I'm struggling to bring myself to replace them since I'm more into head-fi recently.

Do you wear them at work? You can get many really nice in-ears and earbuds that sound significantly better for literally 10 $/£.

Pair with something like this and you've got a less convenient but very capable half wireless replacement for <£30. All the control functionality is still there and you can change volume without digging your phone out! So now I get to spend the remaining £130 on more audio gear. For me, my main hate was having something sticking out from the phone, not the ear wires themselves. This solves the issue and sounds so much better.

Hope you give it a thought!

Well if it needs to be in here bud and you're willing to compromise on sound quality there's no better option.... Venture Electronics VE MONK Plus earbud earphone https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01J0S4AAS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Ms44Cb04JYYJD

I don't get the appeal. I listen to heavy metal where (in many cases) you need to hear well to hear what's going on, since you have so much going on, but I've found $20-30 BT headphones do the trick, though they're a pain to charge. I ordered a pair of these and I think they will do great for the price. If you paid 15-20 for earbuds and you can't hear well then you got ripped off! (no offense) Also I have listened to at least 2000 hours of music in the last 3 years, but I don't require too much bass so idk. I'm being kinda hypocritical because I have a $60 pair of headphones but I can't really notice a large difference between those and $300 Bose sound-canceling ones (tbf I haven't been able to use my dad's Bose in a while)

I am certainly not a "audiophile", and for sure not for gaming or casual listening to music, but I found the CV1 headphones astonishingly good. Better than any "gamer headsets" I had here and also better than the Monks (famous "cheap" Chinese earbuds, see https://www.amazon.co.uk/Venture-Electronics-MONK-earbud-earphone/dp/B01J0S4AAS and better than my Sony or Sennheiser buds. I found the bass pleasantly round and punchy, yet not overdone. But of course that's subjective. Maybe for someone else it's "muddy" - I know a lot of audiophiles prefer a flat sound, I am one of those who is always equalizing bass and treble a notch up. (The CV1 headphones are the first headphones where I didn't have to use an equalizer to get some punch out).

Also..I like the "open" structure of these, when I use "gamer headsets" like my wife has, it is strange to me as they're closed. She however likes it like that. (I agree however that I can very likely get something way better from aliexpress than those extremely overrated HyperX gamer headsets, for a fraction of the price)

People go on about the VE Monk as these super cheap and surprisingly good sounding earbuds. Well, people on head-fi...

Alas, maybe googling those might lead to finding more proper earbuds among the similar/recommended articles.

Hello, I'm interesting in buy the VE MONK earbuds (I like earbuds when I'm watching shows in bed), has anyone bought them on Amazon? I know you can buy them off Aliexpress, which is the official site to buy them, but I have amazon gift card money that I would like to use, and prime shipping :)

It has prime, so I'm interested, in this a legit place to buy the VE monk earbuds?

I have to disagree that headsets are inherently better than ear buds, as there are some great quality ear buds out there. I actually do prefer over-ear headphones with a mic over everything, but I have ear buds whose sound quality challenge many magnitudes more expensive gaming headsets.

Take the VE Monk+ for example. Lauded in the headphone community for its sound quality despite the price. It's not going to compare to several hundred dollars in headphones, but it has great SQ. The only problem is that the one I have doesn't have a mic, so you could only communicate with an external mic.

I still say the best setup, if you don't have a lot of noise pollution in your house, is the Philips SHP 9500 with a boom mic attachment. For roughly $100, you can have a setup that sounds better than the Astro A40, though that price does not include a mixamp.

Edit: Why am I downvoted? Everyone hears "ear buds" and thinks crappy pack-ins, but those aren't the only ear buds that exist. There are ear buds that are several hundreds of dollars. It's straight up wrong to say that a headset is categorically better.

Venture Electronics Monk Plus come in a variety of component qualities, but their cheapest $5 pair are still very impressive.

Upon searching I'm having trouble finding them for their original $5 price.

At that price point your best bet is to buy used, if you’re willing to do so. Try checking out r/AVexchange, most of that is high end gear but you could post asking if anyone has anything they’re willing to part with for $45, and you’ll get something good that probably cost double that new. You can also try eBay, there are some examples of Wirecutter’s budget pick the ATH-M30x in your price range.

The only headphones I can recommend that I’ve personally used in your budget are the Venture Electronics Monk Plus. I use them every day, mostly for podcasts but they really shine with music. They’re earbuds but don’t let the $10 price fool you they are great. Venture Electronics VE MONK Plus earbud earphone https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01J0S4AAS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_nydxDbZ7K4JES
