Just to clarify, I do not work for Victorinox, I have no relationship with them in any way, other than being one of their customers. I had a Swiss Army knife when I was a boy growing up in the USA (now I live in Europe), and I loved it. But I eventually lost it, went to college, and more or less forgot about them.

Recently I read an article comparing the iPhone to a Swiss Army knife, and I thought it might be fun to buy one again. They are not expensive, and they get great reviews. So I bought the Victorinox Spartan in black. It was a good combination of size v. functionality. You probably want to avoid the massive Swiss Army knives that do 50 things but are just too bulky and heavy to carry at all times.

And that is the key, as I've learned. I decided to carry my new Swiss Army knife with me every day, even while at home in my pajamas, just to see if I would use it. My original thinking was that I would not get much use out of it, and eventually it would end up on my desk as a display item.

To my surprise, I started to use it a lot. As noted, the most important thing is to carry it with you at all times, and then to remember you have it with you when you need it. It takes a bit of time to get used to knowing you have the tool in your pocket... :-)

But if you are like me, you soon realize there are 3-4 silly things each day in which the Swiss Army knife is very useful. Not life saving, just useful. For example, in the past 24 hours, I've used my pocket knife to do the following:

1 - Tighten a screw on a door handle. Saved me a trip to the shed.
2 - Open a package I ordered through the mail.
3 - While grilling outside, I opened my beer, saving me a trip inside to find a bottle opener.
4 - While at a hockey match yesterday evening, I used the tooth pick after eating a sausage (sorry to gross you out, but this really happened). Saved me 2 hours of a very unpleasant feeling... :-)
5 - A coffee capsule got lodged in my nespresso machine, and I used the bottle opener/screwdriver to get it out.

Ok, none of the above is a question of life and death (except maybe not getting my coffee), but it was handy having the tool with me. My wife was especially impressed when I fixed the door handle right away. The usual process is that I tell her I need to go to the shed to get a screw driver so I'll do it later, forget about it, then she reminds me in 24 hours and I finally go do it... :-)

One caveat: I live in Europe now, and it's easier here to carry a pocket knife. In the US there are too many metal detectors, probably too many people who flip out when you show them your Swiss Army knife. But here in Europe, from my experience, so long as I don't take it with me to the airport, I'm good.

I love my Victorinox Spartan. I use the knife mostly, but I also use the screrwdrivers a bunch. The smaller one on mine is great for eyeglass screws.
