I'd recommend this package from Amazon: Victorinox Tinker and Classic.
It's a great set of tools that allow for really good flexibility. Swiss Army Knives are great knives for starters and for experienced users. They're durable, fulfill many tasks with their tools, and very compact for their functionality. It will also help you determine whether or not you want a dedicated knife for more focused tasks.

And an added suggestion for a new wallet: Big Skinny.

Cut stuff, obviously!. Knives are a tool and should be used as such, to many people think of them as weapons and are scared/intimidated by knives.

I have a swiss army classic on my key ring that doesn't bother me but is always there when I need it. I like other knives but I never need anything bigger than my swiss army tinker. You can buy both from Amazon.

Try carrying a knife for a month and see if you use it or not (be aware of your local laws though, no need to go getting in trouble needlessly)

For the past 20 years, the Victorinox Swiss Army Tinker Classic SD.

On tour I also carried one of the original build medium size Cold Steel Voyagers with a serrated blade.

The tinkerer did 75% of the work, and the Cold Steel was for emergencies and heavy stuff. Still have both original knives and carry them both. The Tinkerer always, the Cold Steel when I might need some heavier cutting power, (pretty rarely).

In terms of what i had before, I had http://www.amazon.com/Victorinox-Swiss-Tinker-Classic-Knife/dp/B000VY2Y7M/ref=sr_1_5?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1318545462&sr=1-5

(forgot to mention it lol)

In terms of blade size on a folder, what do you guys find most useful? I might head down to big 5 and check it out.

Thanks. I didn't expect so many suggestions !
