Bad news, but I appreciate your straightforwardness and for your helpfulness.

If I would have plugged the ps3 into a surge protector, the surge would've been stopped at the protector and not gone through my hdmi cable right?

If yes, then do I need any kind of hdmi surge protector like this?

I am not very familiar with this stuff, so I'm still learning, but it almost sounds like, if I have all my home theater components (in my simple life it's: tv, cable box, simple home theater (in a box), ps4) plugged into surge protectors, I'd only need the hdmi surge protector on the connection between the cable box and tv (to protect from coax power surge).
