No it's not. These aren't new. $30 is a good deal. $50 is not.

I'll give you $30 for one.

Man. You're so tough. You're looking for premium hardware, not going with the used parts. But accepting the PS4 which is a console. And the other one is a whole PC that you can do a lot with, rather than a gaming, wha da heck!!

Okay here are the links: I changed the parts a little bit. Removed the "Used" ones...

ALL OF'EM = $329 (the graphics card has a mail-in-rebate $20)

Are we good? Haha!

It would've been much cheaper if you consider the "used" parts and going with the ex-generation parts (Mobo+Cpu). Heck, X1 and PS4's parts are kinda old, ya know.

>Which is something you clearly don't have since you are arguing that a prebuilt is better.

Being cheeky, are we?

>Send me a link to a prebuilt GAMING rig that is cheaper than a partlist with similar specs, lets say with a gtx 980.

Okay...

I just went to the HP business outlet website and I found a PC tower with Win8Pro (~$130), an intel core i7-4770 (~$370), and 500 GB HDD (~$50), 4 GB ram (~$40), a DVD drive (~$20), a business type tower case (~$20), a PSU you'll need to replace ($0), and no dedicated graphics card. I'm sure there are other components in that mix you'll re-use as well, but I'm not going to actually open the spec sheet.

These components individually add up to $670. The tower is being sold for $499. That means you'll save a minimum of $170 when starting your build with this pre-built.

The cost of your gtx980 is about $650 on a good day. Its a pretty neat card, but any rig it comes preloaded on is going to be overpriced gamer shit. So, the cost of building the above tower with that card is $670+$60 PSU+$650 GPU = $1380. The cost of buying and retrofitting is $499+$60 PSU+$650 GPU = $1209. That is a 12% discount.

Of course, that isn't a huge savings, but it is still a pretty good start for 10 minutes of looking. The reason you save money is because the PC gamer market has a premium markup: Buyers are willing to pay not only for good hardware, but for the best. The pre-built gaming rigs are marked up 30%-40%, and the gamer specific parts are also marked up 30%-40%. If you buy a business type computer, you'll be paying a lesser markup for the included components. That's why all of my computers have been workstation type models. When you buy laptops, look for models marketed to graphics designers. Business stuff and overstock is simply cheaper.

I see another commenter suggested using diskpart. If you're getting a CRC trying to access the drive with diskpart, the drive is defective. Toss it and buy another one. 500GB hard drives are cheap!

Don't buy HGST or Toshiba, though. I have a stack of dead 500GB Toshibas at work that came out of Dell desktops.

Another TL;DR at bottom.

Yeah, that's about the norm for pre-bought computers, cheap drive. Replace it if at all possible.

I'm pretty sure there's something about Toshiba HDDs being pre-installed with a vulnerability. Either that, or they're just generally cheap pieces of cubic crap.

In terms of replacing your laptop's hard drive, I found This drive with a quick google search. Edit: This drive will not work your your laptop. See end of paragraph. I'm sure there's more affordable things out there, and certainly with larger sized (I got a 1 TB drive for the same price as this one, albeit a desktop drive) so you should certainly look around. I'd stay away from Seagate drives, as I believe they have a reputation for failing earlier than most drives. Edit: If you're looking for a replacement hard drive, make sure you see 7200 RPM in the disk title. I prefer to see the full set of what is shown in my example: SATA 6 GB/s, 32 MB cache, and, Most Importantly for Laptops: 2.5 Inch. a 3.5 inch drive will only fit in a desktop and (maybe?) special laptops. Almost all SSDs come in 2.5 inch, and require a rack adapter for a desktop computer.

Although, I have to say again, there's some sort of inefficiency keeping you from loading in quickly. It is completely possible, with a drive of your current speed, to load in well before your countdown finishes, as you have seen in the past. This suggests to me that upgrading your hard disk alone will not improve your game loading time until whatever else is slowing you down is removed.

Diagnosing the problem: Windows has a task manager, as you are aware. Open up the running processes, and sort by disk access, if that's possible. You should be able to view the process that is eating up your disk speed. Google the process, find out what is running it, and remove/uninstall the program if at all possible.

If you want to keep the program, but do not use it often: Consider disabling the program from your start-up menu. In windows Vista and 7, you could simply run "msconfig" from the start menu, and get a list of every startup program, and an option to enable or disable it. Windows 8 changed that somehow, and I haven't worked out the new system yet. You should consider finding out how that works... disabling uneeded startup programs may not impact how your game performs, but it will always speed up your boot time, and decrease "boot lag." I'm sure you can guess what that is. Also, If a program you don't need is started with the computer, and it's the program hogging your resources, you can disable it here, while leaving it available to launch manually when you want it.

TL;DR: You should consider upgrading your hard drive, however given your previous success with your current drive, it's most likely not at fault, and changing it won't bring significant changes to your game experience until other problems are solved.

Consider using the task manager to find the culprit disk-eating program. Uninstall it, or disable it from startup. Google how to do that though, I'm not familiar with windows 8.

Another edit: Consider running a SMART test on your drive. Here's a relevant post, if you're on Windows 8. It's not quite smart, but if you fail it, backup your data to another disk right away. This is the link for a true-blue, step-by-step on how to run an actual SMART test. Don't install the browser widget.
