The tests and comparisons I've seen of the Xiamoi Yi are just as good as the GoPro, but for $75.

It's tough, because the competitors are just clones of the original that make them "replaceable"-- whereas GoPro had to do the R&D and to pioneer the tech to begin with, which is part of what you're paying for-- the design, testing, user interface, etc.

I mean, take a look at the competitors, they all look identical:

We're at a point where Chinese companies basically realized the winning formula is to take apart a popular product, replicate the parts as cheaply as possible, and then brand it something different to undercut the original. Sooner or later R&D is going to go away.

It's a difficult compromise-- it used to be simple where a company that spent a billion on R&D could protect that investment with patents, but in China, patents are meaningless, and replication is at such breakneck speeds that we're moving towards a situation where a company can come out with a clone of a product you haven't even released yet-- so technically you're coping a product you spent money designing.

I don't know if there's a solution here-- this is why with Android it's become such a race to the bottom in terms of pricing and why Samsung, who owns all manufacturing from chip to screen, is the only one making any significant profit.

If you're worried about how much you'll use it, look into a Xiaomi Yi. It's a GoPro knockoff, but still a good camera. It sells for under $85, sometimes under $65. The housings on the Xi have the same mounting points as a GoPro, so you can use their mounts. As far as using it, you'll find things to do. Just this week I did a time lapse of decorating a christmas tree. I also used the junior chest mount on my 2 year old as we played soccer.

The Xiaomi Yi cam is a extreamely good camera from what I've seen and It's only around 70$!
Shoots 1080p in 60fps, not as good sensor, etc as the GoPro obviously but you can't really compare a 70$ camera with a 400$ one. xD
From what I've seen, It's quite close though and I would totally recommend it. (Assuming that you don't have that big of an issue buying things that's built with the tears of young chinese slaves. :( )

It's from a Chinese company that I believe is their rival in China. For about $80 you get 1080p in I believe 30 and 60fps, and for slow motion recording it has 720p at 120fps.

It's the cheapest I've found with what looks to be good recording quality. The one downside seems to be battery life, though you can keep spare batteries to swap out when needed, and then the fact that there's no screen, so you have to control it via their app on your phone.

For $80, even if it's not that great, assuming it records decently, for my use it's worth it compared to the pretty steep price for the better GoPro.

Edit: I just pulled the trigger on one, so if you want I can post my thoughts in a week or so once I test it out.

I'm considering the Xiaoyi Yi.

Xiaomi Yi 4k You have to buy the waterproof case separately for another $30, but it's a great product. The camera, the waterproof case, and a kit of generic attachments/peripherals and you're set. All for around $300.

If you want something cheaper, the regular Xiaomi Yi is only $100 and still works great. I gave this to my 10-year old son last year for Christmas and it's held up great.

I looked over a lot of different cameras and reviews when searching for mine. I ended up buying probably the cheapest which is an AKASO.
Xiaoyi is also a good option.
The advantage over a phone camera is that you can just set them down and capture the entire room. The only downside is that the battery lasts for about 1.5 hours which is probably just right for taking BJJ vids.
Everyone rolling captured with AKASO

it's because of the growing support for xiaomi products, which can outperform for less $, even in a smaller package. As well as growing micro sport cameras. But seriously, the xiaomi yi is $70, you can buy three of them, and still not afford a gopro 4!!

Do you really mean a camcorder or do you mean a digital camera with filming capabilities?

If you mean a camcorder, I have no idea, if you mean a digital camera that can film reasonably at that price point... I think your best options might be action cameras.

This is the closest I could find to your budget that has nice filming quality.

I think other options near your price range would either be significantly old cameras with outdated features and used.

There's a link for the camera.

Also - unrelated but creepy/impressive. I had looked at it on amazon.com for a few weeks. When I finally went to buy it, the same day delivery option was cheaper than the two-day delivery option. I ordered the camera around 10:00am on a Thursday. It was at my doorstep before 4:00pm on the same Thursday. It kind of blew my mind.

Buy this instead of the session.

Should be cheaper and the quality is close to if not the same. You have to buy a protective case for it but in my opinion that is better to replace if it breaks than the actual camera housing.

u/jaschen · 1 pointr/motorcycles

I'm probably going to get downvoted for this, but I use the Xiaomi Yi camera from China. Its extremely cheap and the quality is spot on. Here is a video of the quality of it. The quality is actually better, but youtube reduced the quality. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNDlHC5ew1o http://www.amazon.com/Xiaoyi-Action-Camera-Wi-Fi-White/dp/B0148TNDXY

I use the GP Hero+ .. I didnt really have a need for screens or anything, just fixed mount good quality video.

I really enjoy the WiFi Feature so I can monitor and adjust my settings from the app..

Takes great video.. No complaints here!

EDIT - WOW THE prices are high on these now.. I snagged mine for 129.99 on amazon... Now they 200+ holy smokes... Check this one if you on a budget.. http://www.amazon.com/Xiaoyi-Action-Camera-Wi-Fi-White/dp/B0148TNDXY But the downfall is you need to buy the protective case as well.. But still cheaper then GP

Could you explain more about this? I have this which I bought a long time ago, but haven't used much. Is Xiaomi Yi dashcam specifically made for the purpose of dashcam? I am guessing this is what you are talking about?
