I didn't like saddle bags at all. For long rides I always wear a backpack so no point on using the saddle bags. For short rides I found them very inefficient as you need to stop to actually grab the phone or grabbing some bar or gel to eat.
Then found about frame bags and felt in love. They are not bigger than a saddle bag but go on the top frame so depending on what you want to do it does not require you to stop your bike ( e.g. grab some food ).
