No experience with anything but the stock controllers of ps4 and the pro, but here are my two cents:

1.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B017YVSZJU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This is what I used to combat the stick degradation problem that the OG controller have (has been fixed but now I'm used to them).

2.

These are what I would replace my triggers with if they ever started getting effed up, although it was most frequently just the spring that was messed up so you may be able to find just those cheaper. For the break down of controller video I used:

Once I opened up one I felt much more confident with repairs since it really is pretty simple even for me (I'm the guy that looks up what solder is when someone recommends it) and if you have a few controllers that are busted it makes it pretty easy to find a test subject. The main reccomendation I have is to make sure you mess with the touchpad ribbon as little as possible as it is the thing that I usually have to mess with most to get it back into position and fully functioning (although still like a 10 minute job overall).

Many common problems with controllers can be fixed, however a couple I can think of that can't be fixed (without more know how than a simple replacement part and a break down video) are when the buttons stop responding at all (assuming it isnt just a dirty connection that you can wipe off) and the more common problem is when the stick gets out of whack (picture in an FPS your trying to sprint but for no reason you will drop out of it). Those problems seem to be get a new controller territory.

4.

The reason I've needed to fix/ work on the controllers comes largely down to the fact my PS4 was the hall PS4 in college so with that reputation comes many overeager shitheads. The best way to keep controller from busting is trying to stay relaxed while playing (tough to control obviously), although YMMV since I see that you are a 6'7" carpenter (opposite of me) haha.

Edit: If you have any other questions there are probably better equipped people but I can try to answer since I've done a fair bit of research into it, just shoot me a message.

You should try a thumbstick extender if you're having this much difficulty making small aiming adjustments. They're like $6 on Amazon.
