I've done something similar, but on the Camino de Santiago. If you can figure out the cell signal problem, some suggestions:

  • Find really lightweight gear if you need anything beyond a cell phone. If you need something laptop-like, ASUS makes some 2 in 1's that are very lightweight and small. I have a T100 for when I go backpacking in the US.

  • Enclose electronics in waterproof map cases. Nothing with fabric and it should use a ziplock-like seal. Water will get everywhere, so this is essential. I use these.. Don't open anything of these cases if your gear is wet and you're not in a building.

  • Find devices that can recharge with a USB battery (T100 does).

  • Remember that tethering drains the battery on your phone, so bring extra batteries accordingly

  • I would avoid a tablet without a hard cover as you'll need something to protect against impacts with all of the rest of your gear.

  • Avoid discussing this gear with other hikers. Most likely won't take anything as they don't want to carry it, but you never know.

  • I live close to the trail, and at least at the south end, Verizon will provide better coverage than most of the other national carriers.

EDIT: Additional tips, cleaned up grammar.
