If I was doing it, I'd use a super thin kerf hand saw. I wouldn't trust myself doing plunge cuts in an already finished piece like that that is pretty much a one shot deal. 1/4" isn't a whole heck of a lot material to cut through either, and that combined with the deflection that would occur unless it is secured properly during cutting would make me especially shy away from a circular saw. Even one with a thin kerf blade.
