There's a lot of great authors publishing independently(self and small press) now, but it can be hard to pick the ones you'll enjoy out of the flood of new releases on Amazon. I'll link to a few of the authors and books I've enjoyed.

Super hero novels

The Blackjack novels by Ben Bequer are fun.

I also enjoyed Confessions of a D-List Supervillian by Jim Bernheimer. They share similar themes of a super-villain forced out of their comfort zone.

Please Don't Tell My Parents I'm a Supervillain by Richard Roberts is the start of a great young adult series about the daughter of super heroes charting her own path.

Fantasy and SF

Anything by Andrea K Höst is great. The Touchstone series is great comfort reading about a young woman who walks around a corner and ends up in another world. It's the most SF of her works.

Terry Mancours' Spellmonger series is a fun fantasy about a mage who retires to the backwoods but ends up in the center of a continent spanning conflict. It spends a lot of time on the details of living in a fantasy world, but there's plenty of action too.

John Conroe's Demon Accords is a contemporary fantasy about a cop turned holy warrior. Fun action/fantasy, a couple of the books focus on side characters for a change of pace.

Jack L. Knapp has a couple enjoyable SF series. I'm partial to his New Frontiers series about the rediscovery of a space drive technology and humanities expansion in to the solar system.

Military SF

Marko Kloos is great as mentioned by others.

Christopher Nutall has a ton of books, both SF and fantasy(I tend to prefer his fantasy).

As someone who publishes on Kindle, I can say that half my monthly income comes from KU. However, your success with it is going to depend on your genre, how well you promote yourself, and the quality of your work. There's a lot of really crap works on KU, after all.

Now, some of my stuff might not quite qualify as HFY, but it definitely doesn't pull punches in the fun department.

Memoirs of a Supervillain is the story of a supervillain's rise to power (and infamy), in his own words. It is the first of three planned books, centering on the adventures of the villain Iceblade. This is not the story of an antihero, vigilante, or someone who is 'just misunderstood'. He is an unrepentant villain. He also has a good bit of fun. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07R9NWS8J

Rules-Free VRMMO Life is my homage to the tabletop RPG concept of the Evil Campaign, in a VRMMORPG setting. When you're tired of heroic heroes heroing about doing heroic hero things so heroically because they are the heroic heroes, sometimes you just want to be Evil. This is the guilty pleasure kind of story that plays into that, like when you're stuck in traffic, and you just wish you had a bazooka mounted to your car to deal with people who get in your way. This story comes with warning labels, and the author officially doesn't care if you read the warning labels and are later offended. If you didn't read the warning labels, and are later offended, the author will point at you and laugh. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071VPRNDB

Into the Black is a sci-fi Gamelit/Litrpg story, and one of the most HFY of my series, but it is not on KU. However, for those who are interested, it follows the adventures of Mirikon Mollen, captain of a freighter called the Starlight Raven, and his crew/harem as he makes a name for himself in the game world of Dreams Amongst the Stars. Through a mix of luck and moxie, he gets tied up in some of the major events unfolding in the game world. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071LT5WGL

City of Champions Online is the closest to a 'heroic' story I get, and is a Superhero Gamelit story following the adventures of Vampyra, a vigilante in the game City of Champions Online. Follow her as she and her team, the Misfits, fight against a variety of threats from the mundane to the mystic and everything in between. A tale of a badass superheroine in a virtual world. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075SHXQS1

Lewd Dungeon is a Dungeon Core gamelit story. Set in a world like ours, where a System Apocalypse saw monsters begin spawning and people gaining stats and levels, one man, an absolutely horrible excuse for a human being, was turned into a Dungeon, and gained god-like powers within his domain. That goes about as well as you'd expect. Definitely the only Dungeon Core story with a slime tentacle monster miniboss named Captain Hentai! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BB34DHF

The Klapishae Affair is a short story I originally put up on this forum, and is some of my earlier work. It is a HFY-style first contact story. It is on KU, though, so free to read. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0739V6R6T

u/RabbiShekky · 1 pointr/writing

Funny you should ask. I'm a novelist in this genre as well, and I've done a bit of research on the market. As you might imagine, this is a fairly niche space. I'd probably be making more money if I wrote vampire romances, but you gotta write what you love, right?

Anyhow, the advice about the Fantasy>Superheroes category on Amazon is real good. There are a lot of books directly tied to licensed properties, like DC and Marvel characters, but I can't tell you much about those since I work in my own universe. There are also excellent lists on GoodReads. Here are some of the examples I used to figure out my keywords and categories (I haven't read any of these yet, but they're on my list):

Soon I will Be Invincible by Austin Grossman. I hear this is awesome.

Confessions of a D-List Supervillain by Jim Bernheimer.

Good Intentions: A Supervillain Story by Michel Crider.

Meta by Tom Reynolds.

The Second Super by Logan Rutherford.

ULTRA (The Last Hero Book 1) by Matt Blake.

And, I hope this isn't a violation of the self-promotion rules (if it is, please let me know and I'll edit this out), but I can't help but add my own novel, The Hero Beat!

I haven't found anything quite like Mother of Learning but it happens to be one of my favorites since it hits everything I like in a book. One of my favorite aspects of MoL is how the main character progressively learns new things and get stronger. This is demonstrated a lot in the litRPG genre (which has a lot of ties with video game RPG style leveling up) so I think any fan of Mother of Learning would like litRPG.

Here are some good litrpg books on kindle:

  1. Survival Quest. Book 1 in the Way of the Shaman series by Vasily Mahanenko. It is written originally in Russian but professionally translated into English. The main character is a prisoner placed into a Virtual Reality MMORPG to mine ore and soon he develops all kinds of unusual high level crafting and professions while finding continuous rare epic level questlines. It has tremendously fast pacing and keeps you on the edge of your seat. I really like the focus on the crafting aspects of MMORPGs and also how the main character chooses to take unusual and clever paths in completing quests and follows his intuition instead of relying on strategy guides and such (mainly because as a prisoner he is unable to access the outside internet). My only gripe is that there might a little too much Deus Ex Machina at times but really enjoyable read otherwise. 5 of the 7 books have been translated into English so far and the last two should be translated by the end of 2017. https://www.amazon.com/Survival-Quest-Way-Shaman-LitRPG-ebook/dp/B00VQRW14E/ref=sr_1_3?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1495212440&sr=1-3&keywords=way+of+the+shaman

  2. Ascend Online by Luke Chmilenko. Book 1 in a new litrpg series. The main character joins a new immersive MMORPG and finds a rural village where he establishes roots. The NPCs are uncannily lifelike and he worries that when the main base of players reach the village they will abuse or treat the NPCs poorly. His real life friends meet up with him and they work hard to defend the village from an incoming army of violent players. Really cool story, the characters level up and gain new skills, magic, and abilities. https://www.amazon.com/Ascend-Online-Luke-Chmilenko-ebook/dp/B01M01ET8E

  3. The Dragon's Wrath Series by Brent Roth - Really cool main character who builds his own village in VRMMORPG and starts caring for the NPCs as real people. He develops a unique fighting style and becomes really strong but his village becomes a target from other jealous players/guilds. Warning: This series might not finish though since the author has bad health and he has delayed book 4 for quite some time. Best series in the genre though. https://www.amazon.com/Dragons-Wrath-Virtual-Dream-ebook/dp/B00W2L8VGU/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1495212376&sr=1-1&keywords=a+virtual+dream

  5. Project Daily Grind. Mirror World Series - https://www.amazon.com/Project-Daily-Grind-Mirror-LitRPG-ebook/dp/B01AF0Z3CE/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1495742577&sr=8-3&keywords=mirror+world

I've been reading a lot this past week, after some time mostly doing other things...

Lair for Rent by Skyler Grant. Not bad, read if you want more in the Laboratory/Emma-verse.

Mastermind by Steve Kelliher. Great first litterpug, made me add his fantasy series to my backlog of books to read.

Hell's Ascendant by Benjamin Medrano. Great finish to another trilogy. Not litterpug, though Sting and Song qualifies. I recommend reading all of his books.

Orc Pirate by Simon Archer. Not litterpug, read it because I enjoyed Forger of Worlds. Enjoyable, though it is a harem power fantasy.

Tree Guardian by Andrew Karevik. Pretty good, second dungeon core novel following a seed of Yggdrasil.

Skyflare by Aaron Oster. Finally got around to this, it's alright, third book in the Supermage series.

Buryoku by Aaron Oster. Enjoyable cultivation novel, first in a new series. We'll see how it goes.

Manifest by Cody Whitfill. Very enjoyable, some interesting differences from similar novels. Looking forward to the next book.

Last but not least, I'm currently reading Gamer for Love by Daniel Schinhofen. A couple of the Alpha World books were not that enjoyable for me, but it seems like he's back on track and finishing off the series well with this one. I'm glad to see another series end.

Hey r/Fantasy!

New News from me is that I'll have a LitRPG Sci-Fi novella out as soon as I line up all my ducks. (they like to move around and quack) In the meantime you can look at me and what I've done.

My books are Science Fiction with dashes of fantasy elements. From the near future to the far fantastical ones. I like AI, GameLit, character driven stories. I consider myself a hard working self-published author.

For the BookBingo readers.

Crafting of Chess

  • Slice of life / small scale SFF

  • Self Published SFF novel

  • Locality : Oregon

  • Published in 2019

  • LitRPG

    Intelligence Block

    *Self Published SFF novel

  • Locality : Oregon

  • Published in 2019

  • Has many AI characters through out the novel, though not the MC

My first book is The Crafting of Chess a teenage chess hustler plays a fantasy VR game to improve his life. A LitRPG that focuses less on combat and more on crafting.

In Intelligence Block a Techno-Wizard performs and battles it out for fame until a mystery disrupts his settled life. All in a futuristic AI filled universe.

I have a new eight thousand word short story you can get for 99 cents or free on Kindle Unlimited. Progression of Power It's a dungeon diving, progressive fantasy, female MC story.

I love the craft of writing. I've done guest posts on blogs about strangeness in fiction and Crafting Believable Characters . I've written about use of tropes in LitRPG. As well as how Autism has effected my writing.

My latest one is a guest post on Trauma in Fiction if you are interested in the craft of fiction writing. Or at least how I view it.

I have Flowertown and Confessions of a D-List Super Villain that can be lent. Both were very good. I'm sure there are many others, but it is so hard to search for the lendable titles on Amazon!

EDIT: Adding more lendable SF titles - only adding books that I liked a lot.

I'm the debut author of a superhero sci-fi novel called Anthem's Fall, and I'd like to reach out to the fantasy community here and offer up E-copies of my novel to anyone who might be interested in giving it a read.

The tricky part with being a debut author is that it's very hard to find readers. In that sense, I'd like to provide an e-book of my novel to anyone who wants to give it a whirl. I define Anthem's Fall as "Michael Crichton meets Marvel Comics". It's kind of a Dragonball Z/Superman/Thor type story aimed at an older audience. It currently has over 50,000 reads on Wattpad in its first month, but I'd love even more eyes on it.

Check the book out on my website http://www.sldunn.com/ or on Amazon at http://amzn.com/B00M7NPD28

Do reach out if you'd like a copy!

Idk if anyone recommended it yet but Van Allen Plexico’s “Sentinel SeriesSentinel Series ” is pretty good. Based on super heroes and aliens. Not LitRPG but a good read.

We've got a few ideas over at LitRPG Forum.

I write myself, but looking at your books listed/read, I'd recommend Endless Online. It's getting a lot of great reviews.

Good luck in your quest!

DOME is the story of Tye and four other teens that find themselves trapped in a mysterious impenetrable dome that has engulfed the Angeles National Forest. Inside, they soon discover that not only has the forest around them been changed into a completely alien environment but that they all have powerful new superhuman abilities. In their attempt to escape, they come to find out that the only way of freeing themselves is to complete three trials set up by the creators of their alien prison where they must combat powerful foes in order to push them to their absolute limits physically and mentally. If they fail, the dome will expand over the planet, terraforming their home and killing all life in the process.

As a story with a very diverse set of characters, pop culture references, action, deep themes about life, mental health, culture, and the struggles of taking responsibility while still being funny/fun, I think you guys would really enjoy exploring this wonderful world and be entertained by the story.

Linking it here. Reviews and sharing it with your friends would help a ton if you enjoy it! Thank you in advance!

Not sure what age range you're interested in but if your inner child enjoys super heroes I heavily recommend Confessions of a D List Supervillain. It's a story for adults with childish fun, the protagonist is a failed villain trying to save a world ruined by the heroes; there's plenty of underdog action and though I haven't read the sequels, they exist too.

You should try some of the older, shorter SF adventure classics. Here are a few links to get you started. I can vouch personally that all of these are smart, fun and well-written.

  • Hothouse by Brian Aldiss
  • Nova by Samuel Delany
  • Planet of Adventure by Jack Vance (much better than its cheesy name suggests)
  • Titan by John Varley

Edit: the best place to get recommendations of this nature is probably r/PrintSF.
u/HenryJakubs · 1 pointr/books

Kid Sensation is a pretty good series, by Kevin Hardman. His writing get's better as time goes on, and you can get the first three books bundled for $7.99 if you are willing to take a chance on him. Otherwise they are either $3.99 or $4.99 for the ebook (you can also order them on Amazon if you want a paperback).

Kingdom of Heroes, by Jay Philips, is also pretty interesting. It revolves around the murder of a superhero, one of the strongest in the country, and the man they release from prison to find the perpetrator. Some people have compared it to Watchmen, and while I don't find it to be as good, there are a handful of similarities. You can get it here.

u/Leigie · 2 pointsr/noveltranslations

While it feels like free stories should just be a thing, it is important to realize that it isn't and people don't usually write/publish/translate a book for free. Buy the book if you can. Also, I recommend Sector 8 (Perimeter Defense Book 1) to anybody that likes science fiction space battles.

u/tomreynolds · 2 pointsr/writing

The first book in my series Meta just got a positive review on Boing Boing yesterday (but don't just take their word for it, also take my word, the guy who wrote the book). http://boingboing.net/2015/01/23/meta-the-meta-superhero-novel.html

Other guys I know who write in the genre and are pretty popular are Kevin Hardman ( http://www.amazon.com/Kevin-Hardman/e/B00CLTY3YM/ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_9?qid=1422141240&sr=1-9 ) and SL Dunn ( http://www.amazon.com/Anthems-Fall-S-L-Dunn-ebook/dp/B00M7NPD28/ref=zg_bs_9059889011_20 ). I think both of them have books for $0.99 right now so they're definitely worth a look for original superhero stories.

u/iAreBeGreat · 1 pointr/books

If you want some books where humans are super awesome, you can check out The Human Chronicles, or the Undying Mercenaries series. Both book series are Earth/Humans against alien antagonists. They are really good, defiantly worth a read.

u/systemchronos · 1 pointr/Fantasy

The Mirror World series by Alexei Osadchuk is pretty good. It is one of the better written series I have come across since it doesn't focus too hard on the hard numbers of playing an MMO and utilizes the game as more of a vehicle for the plot. While the main character stumbles his way into a unique race and class the plot doesn't feel too grandiose for the genre beyond that and the characters are generally well written even though there is a couple of cringe worthy lines of dialogue here and there.

Having read both Dungeon Born and Awaken Online I would place it higher on my personal preferences. This is mostly due to the fact that I prefer my LitRPGs to be more on the Sci-Fi side of the spectrum and that the writing is on par with Dungeon Born but better than Awaken, IMO.

John Varley's Titan trilogy was pretty fun. Basically, a humongous alien in the shape of a spinning hollow toroid who calls herself "Gaea" IS the ecosystem with lots of different lifeforms living inside her. It's a fantastic series.

Van Allen Plexico's Sentinels series is a great read, particularly if you're a fan of old school Avengers.

I wrote a five-book series called Vanguard and that involved a lot of the tropes that you see in the comics (though no magic). Lots of Marvel influence in that one, particularly the X-Men.

There's also Kid Sensation by Kevin Hardman. I've only read the first book, not the others, but I really enjoyed it.

The following are my favorites. He also has a nice website [Varley.net](http://Varley.net "Varley.net") . You can actually get a decent feel for who he is on the site. He puts up what he wants and the hell with what anyone thinks. I think thats why I like him. lol

Confessions of a D-list Supervillian by Jim Bernheimer, which exactly what it sounds like and is great.

Mogworld by Yahtzee Croshaw follows an npc in an mmorpg that has gained sentience. My girlfriend hated this book because I kept waking her up with my laughing.

Bad Humors by Aaron Wright is a phenomenal novella that is kind of a cross between SF, fantasy, and a Lovecraftian Mythos.

Have you considered the LitRPG movement coming out of Russia?

  • Play to Live series by D. Rus. Terminal cancer patient uploads himself into a sword & sorcery game that's becoming more real every day.

  • Perimeter Defense by Michael Atamanov. EVE corp leader gets contracted to take a politician's place in VR-EVE-but-with-real-stakes.

  • Way of the Shaman and Galactogon by Victor Mahanenko. In WotS, a criminal gets sentenced to gold-farm for the government, and sets out to buy his freedom. In Galactogon, 12 players race to discover a secret objective in a sci-fi game for a huge cash prize.

Interesting. The opening setup is almost a duplicate of Skyler Grant's The Laboratory, except the main character isn't a GLaDOS expy.

I think Seiple is likely to do a better job with the story tho, given how well Dire and Threadbare turned out; Emma kinda falls flat after the second book.

This exists, and I'm through book 6's audiobook, but I can't say it's exactly good. It's readable and fits what you want, though. The entire premise is about upgrading things/people/everything, and every book is basically the next tier of struggle. The Game -- www.thegam3.com Aliens contact earth, turns out the galaxy is run based on RPG rules. The MC builds his own AI, and joins the game to try and carve a place for himself among the stars.

Perimeter Defense Series

For more traditional fiction

Troy Rising by John Ringo - A grocery store clerk leverages a black market human delicacy to forcibly uplift Earth. Lots of progression of Tech, crazy ideas, and space battles.
