Yeah, just buy whatever is cheapest. Straight stick candles are cheap and good, but you should have some candle holders ready to be able to burn them safely. Tea light candles are also good. The wide thick decorative candles look nice and burn long, but they tend to be expensive, and burn a hollow into the center, and the high sides blot out much of the light. You don't really need a lot of burn time for your individual candles, it's really not that much of a hassle to replace them once they burn out.

As I said above, I use 7/8 in. It is still too large for normal tapers and you have to get the ones that have the wide, inverse taper at the bottom (like this http://www.amazon.com/Northern-Lights-Candles-Premium-4-Piece/dp/B007TI0HUO/ref=sr_1_2?s=furniture&ie=UTF8&qid=1393852574&sr=1-2&keywords=wide )

1" is definitely too large.

My next size down in 3/4 and it is a bit too small, so if you have something in between that may be best.

I got most of my Candles from a craft supply store. Big boxes of white, black, silver, & gold taper candles; a bunch of 6hr tealight candles; white 3"x3" & 3"x6" pillar candles. I bought a pack of these chime candles off of Amazon and have really liked them!

The biggest issue I've had is finding colored taper & column candles since pretty much all that you can find these days are scented candles, especially when looking in stores.

Oh no! I usually get really cheap ones like this. They might not be what you're looking for because they have like no decorative value lol

I have these which look to be pretty much the same. They work great. I don’t understand a lot of the negative reviews. I think people just don’t understand what they are buying and expected full size taper candles.

Unclear if you are in an apartment or dorm. Since you said neighborhood, I'm thinking you are at home or in an apartment.

Most dorms forbid the use of (or even the possession of) candles.
But a nice, fat medium height candle puts out a fair sum of light, enough warmth to make a difference in a small room and costs next to nothing.

Something like this:

If a candle is a no-go due to fire safety rules, then a USB power bank can be a life-saver:

Something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00X5RV14Y/

Anything in the 10,000-25,000mAh range with thousands of reviews and a 4+ star rating.
Reminder: low-quality Lithium batteries can rupture and burst into flames. This is not the product-category to go cheap on. The difference between a cheap and a quality product is just a couple of bucks more.

The iPhone 8 has an 1821 mAh battery. So that 20,000 mAh power bank is going to give you probably 8 or 9 realistic charges. (There is always some loss when moving power around)

Let's call it 8 Charges. If you are using some data to Google some stuff and using your flashlight to read with, you're probably looking at 2 days and change before you need to go and find some power.

You can charge your tablet from the power bank too, and might even be able to charge a laptop if it uses USB-C for input power.
But those things will drain the bank pretty rapidly.

-----

If you lose power longer than overnight, try to get in touch with your professors and communicate your situation with them and see what they can do for you.

It is very important that you start communicating BEFORE the exam dates.

I ended up buying from Amazon dot com because local merchants do not stock colored candles that I wanted.

30 Euros for a shitty tshirt? 33-70 Euros for shitty stainless steel jewelry that's available on eBay for 3-4 US Dollars?

28 Euros for twelve 7 cm black candles? Hey, look - here's ten SIX INCH black candles for $10.

Sincerely, fuck off with that.
