I used to smoke a Missouri Meerschaum Set, they sold them in pairs back in the old days, a nice straight and a 1/4 bend. Similar to "The Country Gentleman Set" they have now. I've always liked them for a clean smoke and something to have when I go fishing, or doing something where I might damage one of my Briars. They were good enough for Samuel Clemens, and that carries weight with me. He was one of the best minds of the 20th Century. Right up there with Will Rogers & Albert Einstein.

You are correct. And it makes it 100x more comfortable to clench, in addition to protecting your stem from bite marks over time.
Would definitely recommend trying since they are pretty cheap...

Well not too legit if he is making pipes out of walnut...just saying. Here is a pipe made of Pear root, which is a much safer pipe material, but stained walnut color. Mr. Brog is well thought of for his inexpensive pipes. Pear won't generally last as long as briar, but much safer than walnut to use.
I got a burl one at a pipe shop a long time ago, you could probably find one of those easily online, I have also seen glass versions but I've also never seen one of those last more than a year before breaking due to being so comically long and chinese

I bought this lighter and haven't had any problems with it. I bought a butane refill at walmart and the thing has served me perfectly for...oh...six months? It's been through the washer a couple times as well. I'll give it my vote, especially for the 10$ price tag.

Is there a known problem with them? Or are people just off-put by the style? I'm genuinely curious, I really really like this one and was going to have it as my main pipe but if there's something I should know it'd be good to find out now.
Take a look at the Mr. Brog products on Amazon. They make a nice pipe for the price! Here's a nice one!
Personally I wouldn't: if the pipe wasn't made to be smoked, who knows what materials went into it? Plenty of woods will poison you, not to mention paints, preservatives, etc...
Also, the bowl looks very thin-walled. I'd expect to burn through it quickly if I tried smoking it.
Finally, drilling out that curved stem would be a major challenge. I'm not entirely sure it's even possible. If I were determined to do it, I'd first straighten the stem, then drill it, and then re-bend it.
A long churchwarden ain't cheap -- expect to spend about a hundred bucks -- but that's definitely what I'd recommend. Mr. Brog makes one with the name Gandalf stamped on it in runes, but there are lots out there to choose from.

I just bought a Mr. Brog briar block with a straight stem from Amazon.

These. They're terrific, and nice looking.
If I was you id just go check Amazon they have some fantastic wooden pipes. However if you smoke weed with the pipe its going to get really resiny and nasty pretty fast which is hard to clean especially in nicer wooden pipes. I hear if you smoke tobacco in it first though it'll sort of stop resin from coating it as much but im not really sure.

I was gonna get this one, since it's cheap, and I've heard good things about MM.
Ebony is well-known to be toxic. Sandalwood is probably toxic. Both are associated with pipes made for export by fly-by-night firms.
Why would you risk it?
There are lots of affordable options on Amazon made be well-known, trusted brands:
Look online for a hunk of Briar for pipemaking. Then buy a few nicer chisels, and a carving set. Don't forget a pre-made stem and a little high temp stain.
