Yes they are very easy to maintain. That's another reason why I like them so much. The Panasonic brand is one of the simplest and high quality vacuums you can buy. The only complaint I ever hear from people is that they can't find the bags at any box stores. So if you order one I would buy some extra bags with it. These are the bags that come with it, http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-MC-V295H-Type-Canister-Vacuum/dp/B018SVMKU0/ref=sr_1_1?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1457970006&sr=1-1&keywords=c-19+bags. These specific bags are expensive since they are original hepa bags.

What they don't tell you is there are other generic bags you can get.http://www.amazon.com/Kenmore-Canister-50558-Anti-Allergen-Vacuum/dp/B00IA8MDN6/ref=sr_1_6?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1457970006&sr=1-6&keywords=c-19+bags These are the generic Hepa bags.

These are the original paper bags you can put in.

Since weight is a problem I would definitely go with the canister since you can drag it behind you. Another bonus to this vacuum that they don't you is that the bag has a removable docking system. You never have to fight with the bag because the bag sits in a cage that easily lifts out of the vacuum. The vacuum also very easy to put together, from what I recall you don't even need any screw anything together.

I guess first question is how long to you plan on staying in this apartment? I love central vac, and think its the best way possible to clean. But if you spend the money on a hose and cleaner head, it likely won't work in your next apartment.

The good news is you don't have any wall-to-wall carpet. So if you want to go on the cheap, you should be looking for a "low voltage" central vac hose, probably 30ft. You can measure how long you need from the inlets in your apartment to reach everywhere. A hose with a switch to turn the central vac tank on/off should run you about $100, less than $70 if you want no switch (the central vac will just turn on when you plug in the hose).

This hose won't be capable of running an electric powerhead, so you will be limited to an air driven turbohead for cleaning on the carpet. This isn't as good as an electric head, but we are more than cutting the cost in half. Here is an example! from the US. Hopefully you can fine a CA equivalent.

That kit comes with a super basic set of tool and very basic turbo head for rugs. You can double that price if you want something nicer, but if this truly is only for a year or two, I'd have a hard time justifying much more.

I can't tell the difference between R30PET and Brilliance BRLD, but I'm pretty sure these will work.

The tarnish is a silver sulfide, the reaction is a really crappy shorted out battery of sorts. Which has by products of moving the sulfur bond out of the silver, and binds it with the aluminum, as well as some hydrogen. Creates H2S Gas smells like rotting eggs, yum. The aluminum grabs all that free O2 and some of the sulfur. The temperature and sodium bicarbonate break the oxide layer on the aluminum allowing the reaction to progress. To prevent it from tarnishing again, you need to keep it away from sulfur, which if you live in a city (car and esp diesel exhaust) or near most industrial processes can be difficult. Wrap the horn in airtight plastic, or get a flannel bag treated with silver nitrate which serves as a more opportunistic reaction. http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000BVG6E/ref=smi_www_rcol_go_smi?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0000BVG6E&linkCode=as2&redirect=true&tag=househmanage1-20

EDIT: After reading the reviews, seems that this bag formula have have changed. This is likely a better solution, and probably easier to use in your case, if you are at all handy with a needle and thread (or sticky velcro)

http://smile.amazon.com/Pacific-Silvercloth-Yard-Tarnish-cabinets/dp/B000K3EB7A/ref=sr_1_1?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1396401767&sr=1-1&keywords=Pacific+Silver+Cloth

The reaction to tarnish also is sped up drastically with humidity and heat. So just like spices, keep your horn in a cool and dry place and you won't have to science as often. ;-D Of course, than you don't get to science.

SCIENCE!

The Background:

My tentative setup right now has a two gallon reservoir watering a three gallon Smart Pot. I have a 5-10 gal fish tank filter that I've also added an [activated carbon/ammonia neutralizing crystal] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002566YM/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1) filter and leveled filter to. I let my water set at room temperature (cycling through the filter) for several days before giving it to the plant. The water is exposed to 388 watts (~84,000lm) of warm and cool white LEDs in a Carbon Dioxide rich environment with filtered airflow.

My city water report is as follows, with ideal levels, followed by current city water levels:

  • Haloacetic Acids (HAA5)(ppb): <60, 25.1
  • Bromate (ppb): <10, 1.8
  • Total Organic Carbon (% Removal): TT, 52.57
  • Barium (ppm): <2, 0.3
  • Flouride (ppm): <4, 0.7
  • Nitrate [measured as Nitrogen] (ppm): <10, 2.4
  • Sodium (ppm): MPL, 16
  • Thallium (ppb): <2, 0.8
  • Alpha emitters (pCi/L): <15, 4.7
  • Uranium (ug/L): <30, 1.4
  • Copper (ppm): <1.3, 0.257
  • Lead (ppb): <15, 0.003

I presume the Haloacetic Acids are the chlorine they use in the water treatment.

    The Questions:

  • My hope is that the Chlorine will evaporate off over a few days, and that the filters I have will grab onto other problematic elements. Is this reasonable to assume?
  • Should I add anything to my water (pH balance, nutrients, things to help filter contaminants)?
  • How will temperature of water affect my plants? Should I try to cool or warm it before being added to the grow?
  • Does light have any effect on water (or microbial life in the water)? Is it just UV, or can wide spectrum or white lights also have an effect?

This person always replies with the same canned responses advocating for Shark because Consumer Reports said so. If you want to take Consumer Reports word for something straight up then by all means, you do you.

The bottom line is, there are a lot of machines out there. Many of them are very good for a specific use case, or given a set of variables to compare against.

A lot of it is down to opinions and personal preference.

As for Shark, I own one. Model: NV352 31. It, like many sharks, has plastic clips at important points of connection. These are weight bearing, and are prone to failure. Shark will not sell you these clips even though they are an easily replaceable part. All I needed was the red piece of plastic. In my case, the only option was to buy the entire top hose assembly as seen here: https://www.amazon.com/113FFJ-NAVIGATOR-LIFT-AWAY-VACUUM-HANDLE/dp/B00STQV68M/

Shark and Dyson also make bagless vacuums. Some folks find them to be dirty and disgusting to empty. I am one of those people.

Here's a great video from AvE. He does an excellent job tearing down equipment and providing a visual understanding of how things are built, and what his opinion on their quality is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPTzNJMd19A

That said, my Shark cleans the floor about 80% as well as my Miele will. It does not filter nearly as well, but it's passable.

My final opinion, /u/mjwood1, is to do your own research and really find what machine will deliver the things you need and have the problems you want to have. Try them out, get a feel for them. Get your moneys worth.

Otherwise, I'd say this.

If you've got $100ish to spend, buy a Hoover
If you've got $200ish to Spend, Buy a Shark.

More than $200, save some more or buy the above.

If you have $400 or more to spend, consider a high end canister, upright as long as you're willing to take care of it. Sebo, Miele.

u/lawrencemclane · 2 pointsr/VacuumCleaners

Hope you want a Miele or Sebo. That's the only thing this sub us gonna recommend you. Normally this is followed by me recommending a Kirby. But this time I have good reason. Kirby has a brushroll made specifically for pet owners. A Kirby is also super powerful, agitates almost violently, and they're built like Mack trucks (unfortunately they're heavy as one too). Definitely won't let you down, and almost all of the parts from the 1998 G5 forward are interchangeable, ie brushrolls, belts, the fan, et cetera.

u/RainyDay247 · 2 pointsr/Frugal

This is the wood brush. Looks like the bristles are plastic, but the white bristles are firm and the black are soft and they are fine with all but very delicate items.

This is the lint brush. If you brush against the nap of the fabric it does really well. I use this one more often, but I have cats and I imagine it might be different with a dog.

I've heard from friends with dogs that the hair removal gloves have worked well for them, too.

u/MeghanAM · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Somehow, no! Which is crazy because I was terri-badly behaved.

I'm just super enthusiastic about this Dyson kit. I love Dyson. Deep cleaning things is incredibly satisfying to me.

u/much_longer_username · 1 pointr/Skookum

Inexpensive carpet shampooer brushes, like this one https://www.amazon.com/Hoover-Brush-Block-Bristle-Extractor/dp/B00Y33VRAC are also nice. I wish I could find one like it that's a bit more robust.

u/china_rider · 3 pointsr/BuyItForLife

I love my Dyson. Got it refurbished off of woot for a great price. I used mine for over 4 years before deciding to replace the battery.

I replaced with this one:
https://www.amazon.com/Powerextra-Replacement-Battery-917083-01-Handheld/dp/B00E0FUFVK

u/OmegaNaughtEquals1 · 3 pointsr/VacuumCleaners

The Compact C1 series is designed to replace the Classic series (the Miele website only shows one model from the Classic series), so you will be getting effectively the same machine but newer. The Pure Suction model can't be paired with an electric head because it doesn't have the power connectors in the hose. You would have to at least buy a new hose if the machine supports it at all, and even the cheapest electrobrush head (the 217) is going to cost $150 USD, pushing your total to $450. At that price point, there are two models that are better than the C1 Pure Suction. On the lower side, you could go with the Compact C1 HomeCare that is only sold by dealers. This one has a turbobrush (not an electrobrush), but that should work so long as the short-yarn pile is fairly loose. I'm not sure about the exact price, but the one at my dealer is around $300. If you can afford to go up slightly in price, then I would recommend the C1 Delphi. It has the basic 217 electric brush and is upgradable to the 228 or 236 brush if you ever get hi-pile carpets. It also comes with the Parquet Twister (a $66 value) which is essential for hardwood floors and is orders of magnitude better than the multihead that comes with the Pure Suction (I have both).

u/anneewannee · 2 pointsr/RedditLaqueristas

I'm not sure of the exact size of my brush, but it's something like this, and the width is at most 1/4", but I think it's actually a bit smaller. It's really small and fine, and easy to maneuver around my cuticles.

u/LesPoissons90 · 6 pointsr/Baking

I mostly make cakes and cookies

Measuring spoons and cups, 2 sets, get ones with raised numbers, not printed

Whisk

Rubber spatual, 2 is better

Electric handmixer

Cookie sheets, again 2 is better

Parchment paper

Bundt cake pan or 2 9" pans or cupcake pan (cupcake papers)

-------------------
An electric mixer would be my priority, it's necessary to make cookies and icing.

A pan set like this would be good, but it's $50
http://www.amazon.com/Cake-Boss-Nonstick-Bakeware-6-Piece/dp/B00FB9TWE0/ref=sr_1_26?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1450760068&sr=1-26&keywords=Baking+pan+set

Michaels and AcMoore have a lot of baking stuff and they always have coupons for 40-55% off 1 item (highest price). AcMoore has a 55% coupon now and you can use it at Michaels.

For a pan set or mixer you could try home goods/marshalls/ross/burlington coat factory/tj maxx.

You're a good dad.

I use a Hoover WindTunnel Air which does a really good job of sucking up all the dog fur from my carpets. Only complaint is that I typically have to empty the canister multiple times as it fills up quickly (my husky/shar-pei/mutt sheds a lot of fur). Hoover also makes pet attachments that fit that vacuum, but they don't come with it. I find that the [Cyclonic Pet Upholstery Tool](http://www.amazon.com /Hoover-UH70085-Windtunnel-Cyclonic-Upholstery/dp/B00F9GPQ2M/ref=sr_1_1?s=vacuums&ie=UTF8&qid=undefined&sr=1-1&keywords=Hoover+windtunnel+pet+attachments) does a great job of removing fur from upholstered furniture, if you use it properly (run it side to side, so the rubber blades are making a squeegee kind of motion).
