To open them up, you need a special screwdriver. I bought this $11 kit and it's got stuff to open pretty much any retro cartridge or console. If you're in the business of collecting retro games, one of those screwdrivers is imperative, IMO.

The Super Retro Trio+ is around $75 on Amazon. The NES and Genesis work great, but the Super NES has bad audio, especially for the Super Gameboy (it's basically unplayable). I also have an RES+, which is essentially just the NES part of it, which is around $40. These don't have a 4:3 switch built in, which I hate because neither does my TV.

I prefer the Hyperkin Retron HD ($30) and the Supa Retron HD ($50) because they have a toggle switch to output in 4:3 or 16:9, but the Retron HD won't play some of the NES games that my RES+ will (but the Supa Retron does play the Super Gameboy just fine). Hyperkin also just put out a Mega Retron HD ($50) but I haven't bought one of those yet.

So it's all a balancing act with what clone consoles you like best. Luckily, I got most of mine with gift cards or as Christmas/Birthday presents, so I (mostly) didn't have to pony up my own cash.

Honestly as long as it has a decent triwing driver and the right hex-bit thingy for cartridges that should be sufficient. Although if you have the money you can shell out for something fancy like that iFixit toolkit the other guy linked.

Honestly I'm looking at a pretty cheap $10 one on amazon for myself as I need to replace some cart batteries.

Might be decent, hard to say from a picture though.

For other screwdrivers in general (no triwing/hex):

I don't know anything about the quality of these particular ones:

A nice set of screwdrivers like that where it's one solid piece but small and has a good grip is useful for many things with small screws.

I bought myself one of these for computer stuff:

The top cover comes off really easily, I just bought one from Craigslist and gave it a nice deep clean, I bought a kit with the screwdrivers and brushes on Amazon for $10. I'm a bit of a clean freak as well, so I thought it was a good investment.

Yup I had this guy, I thought it was so cool because I loved Sonic.

Yeah, a scution cup is very safe and wont destroy the case.Yes the most screens come with adhesive tape. You can remove the old adhesive with a flat object. I bought a kit on amazon with all the tools to mod a GBA and other Nintendo consoles:

The game gear was practically a portable Master System. There es even a converter that let you play MS games on the GG.

It's easy. I just did a bunch of them earlier this week.

If you have never soldered before, watch some "how to solder" videos on Youtube. Or "how to replace battery" videos.

You will need special screwdrivers/driver bits to open most cases. I have a set like https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01KSOWL3Q/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

When I first did this a few years ago I put battery holders in some of my carts but I found that they are too thick so I removed them and just went with tabbed batteries: https://console5.com/store/panasonic-cr2032-3v-lithium-battery-with-solder-tabs-pins.html

this thing. Mind you, a qtip and some isopropolyc alcohol can net you a great result, but for games that need a deeper cleaning you usually have to open It up ( its not hard, i'm just lazy), and you dont have to with the 1 Up card most of the time.

I've had this sitting in my amazon wish list since jan 2010 o.o

It looks like they still make Master System Cartridge Adapters.

PSA:
You can mod these things to use an LED backlight in lieu of the power heavy fluorescent. While you're at it, you should change out the bad capacitors with which these things were manufactured. Most game gears' screens are very dark now due to capacitors failing. It's a relatively easy fix with some tutorials and a little soldering experience.

You can hunt down capacitor lists and such on forums, or you can buy a kit like this one

The led backlight is a little trickier. Here is the first tutorial I found using google. There are a lot of youtube videos as well.

I've replaced the caps and bought the stuff to do the led mod. Haven't found the time yet to do it.
