These would be good for a rainy day, because I need to label all of my spice bottles and oil dispensers. Sounds like boring stuff, but it would make my rainy day feel productive and then my kitchen would be that much more pleasant to look at while I'm cooking rainy day meals. :D

You don't even need a printer. Buy yourself a roll of serial numbers like this: http://www.amazon.com/Serial-Number-Barcode-Sequential-Stickers/dp/B00RJC58WM then get a USB barcode scanner www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=usb+barcode+scanner . They basically act as a keyboard input so you scan the item whenever you want to check it out / return it, and the number is placed into whatever field you have in focus, so it works with any asset management software.

Bonus tip that's making a comeback: buy a pack of paper hole reinforcer rings and put them on top of your samples. Swab them with ink and now you can tell what's what in the holder.

These are a great investment if it happens often to you. Saves a step since you just stick one on both sides of the paper instead of taping and then re-hole punching. Especially if you're like me and rip hole punched papers by accident a lot. Keep a sheet in the binder since access to a hole puncher isn't always guaranteed depending on where you are.

Thanks! I bought these from Amazon - I find that the chalk pen comes off more easily if you immediately wet it and wipe it down, but not so much after a while (like a few days later).

I use these Avery fabric labels (link below). They are washable though a few have peeled off after many washings.

One tip: I use last name instead of first name so that they’ll also work for younger siblings.

I use GIMP and Linux, but I just bought a thermal printer, Brother QL-700. The off brand DK1208 labels are the perfect size for juice labels. Brother provides drivers for LPR and a CUPS wrapper.

In the long run, this is way cheaper than the Avery method($9 for 400 labels vs $25 for 600 labels), and no ink or toner to replace. Only downside is that the labels will all be in black and white.

If you don't want to go the whole label route, I like to use .75 inch round Avery labels to stick on the cap.
