Don't know if you already got one but a parabolic mic is an awesome addition for field recording. I build budget one out of this poly-carb bowl that ended up being the perfect size for sound quality and portability. You just need to add a handle by drilling a hole in it (apply very little presure and it won't crack or chip) and using a long bolt and nut to secure it. Then find the right positioning of your mic(s) using the left over bolt length to mount them and you can acheive some amazing clarity at crazy distances (75-150ft depending on wind conditions). Also really good for capturing sound from insects and animals, I was able to quite loudly tune in on a bee from 10+ft and up close the detail was crazy. I used a Lom label Uši stereo microphone inside the bowl and just roughed the distance from bowl till I got what i was looking for. With proper engineering you could totally fine tune your mic placement.

I love the silicone ones. I have a set: https://www.amazon.com/Norpro-Silicone-Mini-Pinch-Bowls/dp/B00080FPZM/ref=sr_1_8?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1549316963&sr=1-8&keywords=pinch+bowl

I also have a set of glass dishes like these: https://www.amazon.com/Maredash-Kitchen-Stackable-Dishware-Combination/dp/B07DVHDBMX/ref=sr_1_25?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1549316963&sr=1-25&keywords=pinch+bowl

And some crockery ones like these that are really nice and opaque (when that is important): https://www.amazon.com/Now-Designs-Terracotta-Pinch-Bowls/dp/B06XS1B6SS/ref=sr_1_5?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1549316963&sr=1-5&keywords=pinch+bowl

You can also do those in plastic: https://www.amazon.com/Oggi-Melamine-6-Piece-Assorted-Colors/dp/B001U24ESQ/ref=sr_1_7?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1549316963&sr=1-7&keywords=pinch+bowl

I'd recommend the silicone ones, but only if you can get big enough ones. Otherwise it can get frustrating not having enough. I think for the bang for the buck, the glass ones above are the best balance of cost, size, ease of use (and non-game utility), cleanup (if needed), and stackability. :) If silicone were cheaper and larger, they'd be my fave.

I love the pie plate idea, but if you can't find enough in time for your party, Corelle Livingware makes great pasta bowls available on Amazon. I love mine.

In terms of making a good salad, check out this NYTimes article (https://cooking.nytimes.com/guides/43-how-to-make-salad). It gives you all the components you need to make a good one! You should have different flavors, textures and ingredients to spice it up and take it from sad leafs to full blown meal.

In terms of making it cheap - buy everything in bulk, especially dry goods. Also, make your own dressing because it’s super cheap and much tastier/healthier.

Enjoy your salad making.

PS: suggest investing in a nice bowl to eat it out of. Salad is easier to prep and enjoy in a bowl like this (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HK5SYK2/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_c_api_i_4W-KDb3VBC953)

Edit: spelling

I was having the same problems when I 1st started. I was using the standard VDH starter kit that came with brush, soap, and bowl.

You are using a higher quality brush, but are you using the VDH bowl to build your lather? I had been using the VDH bowl as a lather bowl and was having very poor success with it. I switched bowls to a plastic salsa bowl similar to this that I had in the kitchen and the results were night and day difference. Suddenly my lather was thick, rich, fluffly, and very slick. The VDH bowl was just too small to build decent lather.

The best way I've found is the /u/leisureguy method:

Soak brush while showering then pull the brush out of the bowl of water and without shaking it off take it soaking wet to the soap puck with the puck sideways over the sink. Run the brush vigorously and briskly around the soap (the bristles should splay out quite a bit) until the bubbles turn microscopic (not just small, but invisible, it should almost look like lather already). Take the brush to your bowl and whip it around in the bowl. I discovered I had been WAY too light handed at this part and I was basically just trying to stir lather up from nowhere. When I almost mashed the brush against the bottom of the bowl while mixing it made a world of difference and lather built up in less than a minute whereas I had previously been spending up to and exceeding 5 minutes trying to make lather in the past.

If that doesn't work, it could be hard water and you might try a distilled water shave also courtesy of /u/leisureguy

u/BrainKatana · 4 pointsr/ramen

Best instant ramen I've ever had is Nissin Raoh Tonkotsu ramen. You can get it from Amazon here.

Then get this pair of bowls.

Then, go to the store and get some eggs, green onion, a few thick cuts of pancetta (like 1/4 inch), wood ear mushrooms, nori, soy sauce, and mirin. If you can't find mirin at the store, you can also order it from Amazon!

Do up the eggs like this.

Slice the green onion really fine, like 2mm slices. Slice at a 45 degree angle.

Throw the pancetta in a skillet with a bit of vegetable oil. After it starts to sizzle, drop 2 tbsp of soy sauce and mirin (each) into the pan. Once the pancetta is carmelized (you still want it to be a little floppy), remove from heat/set aside.

Get some water to a boil and then add the wood ear mushrooms. Cook for about 3 minutes (they cook fast). Drain/rinse the mushrooms in cold water, then slice them thin, about 1/4 inch. Set aside.

Cook ramen according to package instructions. Immediately after plating (while it's still too hot to eat), add your toppings: 1 egg (sliced in half), 2-3 pieces of pancetta, nori, green onion, and mushrooms to taste. Let the bowl cool with the toppings in it for a minute or so, then dig in.

That's how I do my "too lazy to get to a ramen shop" ramen. Total prep/cook time is less than 20 minutes.

Also, remember that the best bowls of ramen are the ones you eat next to each other. Happy noodling!

Ok, at the creator's go-ahead, I'll bite. Let's get this roast going. I hope I'm not too punishing.

  • The product name differs between the title and the summary
  • I'd be afraid to buy stained-wood kitchenware in general, especially handmade. Vegetable oils can cause stain to leech out of wood. There are food-safe stains.
  • Nothing here really shows that heating food is a good alternative to salts and fats. If I had the choice between a piece of hot, dry toast and cold, buttered toast, I'd choose the latter.
  • If this thing were to be mass-produced (in wood) the FDA would stomp it out pretty quickly, probably for a number of reasons I don't understand as well as the stain thing.

    My suggestions:

  • Consider making a two-chamber design where you can pour warm water in, instead of plugging it in. It's faster, safer, and requires fewer parts.
  • Have a manufacturable design. Handbuilt wooden boxes are not scalable. You may need to call in a favor, but having a real design drawn up in CAD will pay for itself in the long run.
  • Talk to a small-run plastics manufacturer. A local one for me is Protolabs. You can get just one or two parts made in a relatively cheap mold, and they'll save the tooling for when you're ready to go full-scale.
  • Once you've done the above 2 things, start a real campaign with the prototypes and a more realistic funding goal for full production.

I am seconding the ceramic bowls for ramen. I also recommend trying to find bowls with spoon or chopstick rests like this. I do not have the exact same style but I do like having the chopstick rest in my own bowls.

And I would definitely pass on the steel chopsticks, you'll have noodles slipping all over the place.

If you are looking to get a full set you can find spoons like these to eat the broth with if you are not fans of sipping the broth right out of the bowl.

ETA: This is my personal set. and it has worked well for my husband and I for years.

The never-soggy cereal bowl

Picture this: Some friends down the hall invited me to come over and hang out, but I was hungry and wanted a snack. So I filled up the cereal section of the bowl with cereal, and the second section with milk, and walked down the hall. In the time it took me to do this, enter their room, find a place to sit, and actually start eating, not a single piece of cereal had touched my milk, leaving it all perfectly crunchy and ready for consumption.

This is life changing, my friends, life changing.

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/aww

6.5 weeks is a bit young, IMO. Breeders should be keeping them until 8 weeks to make sure they're eating on their own, not making you make sure...gah.

That bowl looks kinda tall. These bowls are nicely sized, and you don't have to worry about Chinese glaze that may or may not contain toxics (the pet bowls imported aren't inspected for safety as things meant for human consumption are, like lead):

Because it somewhat fits the topic and I'm thinking about buying one: are silicone baking mats useful? Are there differences or will any one do?

Most usefull baking tools for me are a good scale and I really love glas bowls like these.

I think these bowls, probably. I just added them this morning. Pricey, but sooooo cute. That and pretty much all of the food on my food wishlist lol

mine is something like this, with the servers, and its awesome. we use it at least once a week and its great. we put everything in, including dressing, and its easy to then split between two people and everything feels evenly dispersed

NOT dishwasher safe, but the 1 minute it takes to clean it in the sink is worth it

Read every top-lever comment so far:

  1. not French onion soup - ironically not a single person mention that the ONIONS ARE NOT FRENCH CUT!
  2. not a single comment, that is not OP, that thinks this recipe looks good... with 2.5k positive vote score, this is crazy.
  3. Yes, OP subbed in alcohol when making this... we still think they are drunk, we know they were starving when they made this.

If you are in the USA:

https://www.amazon.com/APS-Feuerzangenbowle-Fire-Tong-Punch/dp/B0018NY6L2/

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004V49VII/

Basically you need a fire-proof rechaud burner made out of metal or heat-resistant glass with a large enough bowl for the liquid. Something that is used for fondue might work. On top of that goes a holder for the sugar cone. You can fashion your own holder for the sugar cone out of metal instruments, I would probably use something like this as a base:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07C1L1PT5/

Make sure the tongs don't have plastic parts or you will melt the plastic into the bowl along with the sugar.

u/knollexx · 4 pointsr/cocktails

What you have there is a ripoff.

A normal pot on the stove is fine, doesn't make a bit of a difference. The spaetzle maker would probably work fine, provided the sugarloaf doesn't fall off.

After the sugar has completely melted I remove the Feuerzange and use a mesh strainer to remove the citrus slices and cinnamon sticks from the pot.
