I did a 13 hour drive with two cats.

I did two separate carriers, normal cat size ones where they can turn around and whatnot, but not move a ton. I'd recommend a hard sided carrier, they're safer. If you had a soft one, make sure there aren't any holes he can bite/claw to work his way through.

I used something similar to this that I picked up at petsmart for about $20.

I wanted them safe in case of an accident - the less room the had to fly forward in their crate, the less likely they were to get injured.

I stopped the normal amount of times I would, probably every 3 hours or so for gas, restroom, and food.

I would get the food, and eat in the car, and I let them out while the car was parked while I was eating.

I had a small covered litter box and water/food for them to have access to. They didn't use any of them, which is fine, it was only half a day. But he should have access to all of them, and at least a few 10-20 minutes breaks to give him the option to use the litter and drink.

They were pretty quiet, talked a bit at the start.

Never let the cat roam the car while it's in motion. Ever.

Thank you! This is really helpful. Did you keep her in the carrier before and after the flight too or were you able to let her walk around a bit in the airport? I hear there are potty spots for dogs in the airport but I don't know about cats. My cat is an indoor kitty and can Houdini herself out of a harness so it probably doesn't make sense for her to be walking around in the airport anyway but I feel bad having her shut up in a carrier for the ride to the airport, 2 hours waiting, the 4 hour plane ride, through the airport, into the car, and home. But it sounds like that's what your cat did? Did you put pee pads in the carrier? Blankets? Toys?

I hope my carrier is airline approved... I can't find the exact one but it more or less looks like this: https://www.amazon.com/A4Pet-Collapsible-Travel-Carrier Medium/dp/B01GPE55YA/ref=pd_lpo_vtph_199_tr_img_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=6PWJJBN789FNCW7V0R6V

I LOVE this carrier and I fly on Southwest with my cat all the time! It's sturdy and durable, has expansions for the layovers, has a pocket to store treats, can be squished a little, and breaks down flat for storage and has a little case to store it in. I love it and I also really love the color.

I just noticed that it's all sold out, but they do still have the single expansion available here.

Seconding the Kong idea. This is my list, based on the Digital Dog Training Book linked to in the sidebar:

I like that they are expandable so it would give them more room while I’m waiting at the airport

Both my cats pretty much sleep in it every night...

u/charcuterie_bored · 3 pointsr/beyondthebump

I often travel with my Yorkie in this carrier. It's portable but also has a thing in the back that you can pull the seatbelt through so it's secure and the dog stays safe.

I have a carrier similar to this one that I use for travel. Albeit, I've never flown with my bun but she's gone for multiple 3+ hour car rides to the vet in it. It has a metal bar frame so it's very sturdy, plenty of ventilation, and multiple access points for calming pets and snuggles. Maybe I'm lucky, but I've never had issues with either of my buns chewing at it!

I know hard carriers are preferred but the only ones available around me aren't ideal in my opinion. Too easy for my bun to hurt herself on the sides due to the ventilation design. I'm a paranoid bunny mum as well so pretty much nothing is ever good enough! Soft sided works for my buns and I for now at least.

this is what amazon sent me on the first try...

It’s a “Jet Sitter” from Amazon!

Jet Sitter

u/rosedaughter · 1 pointr/guineapigs

I have to make trips with my pigs a few times a year, and I use something like this. Gotta think about washing it out. I line it with a folded towel or a cuddle cup, put hay in the back, and carry a waterbottle for pit stops.
