🎓 Reddit experts on bluegrass music
The comments and opinions expressed on this page are written exclusively by redditors. To provide you with the most relevant data, we sourced opinions from the most knowledgeable Reddit users based the total number of upvotes and downvotes received across comments on subreddits where bluegrass music are discussed. For your reference and for the sake of transparency, here are the specialists whose opinions mattered the most in our ranking.
I love the discussion these questions always create - but to me, it's a question that is impossible to answer.
It's like asking "what is the best food of all time" or "what is the best colour of all time." Some people cant' stand spicy food. I personally can't stand mushrooms. And no matter what food or colour your find disgusting or can't stand - there is likely another person out there that loves it. And there is nothing wrong with that.
Even with an artist, it's really difficult to pinpoint there "best album" a lot of times. Take Flatt and Scruggs. Foggy Mountain Jamboree is probably their quintessential album. But for banjo players, Foggy Mountain Banjo is just everything you need to know about Earl's banjo picking. And there is something so special about their live from Carnegie Hall album that was already mentioned.
When John Hartford's Steam Powered Aereo-Plain album came out, it was a flop. Now it's considered incredibly influential. I know people that still hate it though. And personally, I like Mark Twang more. So which is the better album? I know which one was more influential.
In short there is no "best bluegrass album of all time." Music isn't like a race where you can crown someone the best because they were the fastest or the strongest.
And it's funny - everyone mentions "Rounder 0044," which I think is an INCREDIBLE album. But personally, I love this untitled JD Crowe and the New South album more
It's a personal taste thing, but I'm very into music and I think there are vast catalogues of music that are enjoyable for both adults and children, and there's no need to compromise.
In my opinion, most "kid-oriented" music is utter bullshit and I find it highly annoying. Luckily my wife agrees and she has excellent taste in music so we're probably okay.
And I'm not saying that all kids music is terrible. Even before we found out we were pregnant, I watched a bit of Yo Gabba Gabba and totally dug it. They do a great job of having great musicians come on and get the kids dancing. Lullatone is another.
Or, for instance, I have this "Amazing Electronic Pop Sounds Of Jean Jacques Perry" LP and put it on yesterday and we danced around. It was super fun and goofy.
I've also been rocking the Tomita album "Snowflakes Are Dancing" of Debussy interpretations on modular synths, it's just the right kind of atmospheric, engaging and weird that feel brain-stimulating to me.
I guess my main issue is with whitewashed, low-imagination music. Not in concept, but in the tonal structures, performance, and recording techniques. So much kids music feels fakey and hucksterish, and kind of insulting to kids intelligence. I'd rather throw on something with bright tonal colors but interesting structures.
I have the same issue with kids toys and furniture that are all poorly-designed, garish plastic bullshit. Like, I get it that a lot of this stuff isn't meant to last forever but it doesn't have to look like a bunch of unicorns got hopped up on energy drinks and barfed all over the place.

|name|Doc Watson|
|about artist|Arthel Lane "Doc" Watson (March 3, 1923, Deep Gap, North Carolina – May 29, 2012, Winston-Salem, North Carolina) was a guitar player, banjo player, songwriter and singer of bluegrass, folk, country, blues and gospel music. Doc played guitar in both flatpicking and fingerpicking style, but was best known for his flatpick work. His virtuosity combined with his authenticity as a mountain musician made him a highly influential figure during the folk music revival. ([more on last.fm](http://www.last.fm/music/Doc Watson))|

If you like this, listen to two things: Strength in Numbers and Bela Fleck: Tales of the Acoustic Planet. Strength in Numbers was a group with Edgar Meyer on bass, Sam Bush on Mando, Mark O'Connor on fiddle, Jerry Douglas on dobro, and Bela Fleck on banjo; it was amazing. Tales of the Acoustic Planet Vol. 2 had Edgar Meyer (seeing a trend here?), Bela Fleck, Tony Rice, Sam Bush, and the elusive Stuart Duncan on fiddle. As an added bonus, Chick Corea also played on the album. Slopes from Strength in Numbers and When Joy Kills Sorrow from Tales. Enjoy!
Here is the Crooked Still CD for sale on Amazon if you're interested in getting the CD, jank. I own it and all of the music on the CD is very good! I'd never even heard of them until the 'gameplay' trailer! =)
Fade to Bluegrass was pretty good, and it has the added bonus of being a real album.
Grown Up (a Revisionist History) by The Chapmans. Mostly traditional bluegrass song structure and instrumentation with unbelievably clean production and performances, and the best melodic solos I've ever heard.
Dawg Jazz & Hot Dawg would be great for OP.
Also because no one has mentioned them: Strength in Numbers

Foggy Mountain Banjo
Nothing but instrumentals from Flatt and Scruggs, each one a classic.
