Eat rice for carbs. No simple carbs. I'm not expert but some of my running friends scolded me for saying I'm eating donuts all weekend before my first HM to carbo load. They said to stick to complex carbs like rice. So that's my Saturday dinner plan!

You need to figure out layering for the race and what works for you.

At 45 degrees, I'd normally be running in shorts, a running t-shirt and zippered rain jacket (light weight running type) along with a baseball hat. You'll hat up during the run and want to unzipper. ACtually, I'd consider a long sleeve shirt instead at 45.

You might want gloves too, that depends on you though. I love the kind of gloves that have the finger flap thing so they convert to finger less easily. And something light weight so I can expose my palms too. Your hands can get surprisingly warm with normal gloves on.

These things are awesome (tempted to order a new pair right now!) They are good for me in the 25 to 50 degree range. Under 25 degrees and I need to move to something more heavy duty:

I strongly recommend choppers for your mittens, especially if you have to shovel/snowblow. You don't have to spend $60 at Cabela's, find some good ones on Amazon. Here are the ones I have: http://www.amazon.com/Deerskin-Leather-Mitten-Pull-Liner/dp/B00487KJKM/ref=cts_ap_3_fbt

What does chippy mean? Why do you want leather? They make leather gloves and mittens with wateproof linings. Or you can get plain leather mitts like these: https://www.amazon.com/Northstar-Deerskin-Chopper-Mitten-Unlined/dp/B00FM85A5A/ref=sr_1_6?dchild=1&keywords=leather+chopper+mittens&qid=1570304071&sr=8-6 and use a product like snowseal to wax them. But waxed leather gloves without a waterproof lining are not waterproof, only water resistant.

Yeah, I'm interior Alaska so I know about warm. http://www.glacierwear.com/natural-beaver-fur-mittens.html are the kind of thing I'd make for "crazy nice, crazy warm" mittens. My dad swears by http://www.amazon.com/Tan-Lined-Elkskin-Chopper-Mittens/dp/B00487QPTQ which are a little closer to what it sounds like you're describing. Especially with the deer tan you had before.

If your hands get really cold I would recommend either the dachstein extreme mittens, or something from Ojbro Vantafabrik

Also, chemical hand warmers last too long for most uses, unless you are going to be outside for hours they are a waste of money. But the reusable gel handwarmers last 20-30 minutes, which is just right for commuting or shoveling, and can be recharged in a pot of boiling water (or even in a microwave)

This kind you stick in the microwave to warm up

This kind you just "recharge" in the microwave, but you can activate them at any time

I tried way too many gloves throughout my life, and these boiled wool mitts have been the only pair that actually keep my hands warm.

Something you want: The Wildwood Tarot

Something you need: A cat scratcher lounge thing, because my couch is looking pretty sad

Something to wear: Gloves for my poor frozen hands

Something to read: Wonderbook: The Illustrated Guide to Creating Imaginative Fiction, by Jeff VanderMeer

Something to watch: Season 1 of Hana Yori Dango

Something to listen to: Sonic Highways by the Foo Fighters

I can't decide between two of the items, so here's two riddle haiku (riddle-ku?).

First: Fingers hide in sleeves / But the cold makes them clumsy / Wrap them up in wool

Second: Evoking nature / Divining secret meanings / Tell me my fortune
