I suggest Teaching to Transgess by bell hooks and the companion book Teaching Community.

The books are written by bell hooks, a renowned author and professor on feminism and black studies. So a lot of her wording is taken through that lens. But the message remains the same. It is a completely different take on how to view the classroom than any other pedagogy book I've ever read. I buy a copy for anyone I know who is going into teaching. I have the following from the book hanging above my desk.

“To educate as the practice of freedom is a way of teaching that anyone can learn. That learning process comes easiest to those of us who teach who also believe that there is an aspect of our vocation that is sacred; who believe that our work is not merely to share information but share in the intellectual growth of our students. To teach in a manner that respects and cares for the souls of our students is essential if we are to provide the necessary conditions where learning can most deeply and intimately begin.”
-bell hooks

>It absolutely is. No evidence for it whatsoever.

Bunk. The fact that there is a real (if remote) possibility of a Trump presidency has forced many formerly "objective" journalists to be refreshingly honest about their intentions of steering the American public towards the "correct" point of view.

We know that academia has a strong liberal bias, we know that education in general has a strong liberal bias, we know that government employment has a liberal bias. Journalism is a bit harder to prove, since like all good liberals, journalists will deliberately present themselves as impartial and honest to get that moment of candor they need to trash the reputation of their political opponents.

I've heard plenty of liberals air some fucked up things, but they have the right opinions, so the media protects them.

>There is however plenty of evidence for a conservative bias in the media. This book, while somewhat dated, does a good job of breaking it down.

That's a laughable claim. I don't even want to know what "objective" media would look like in your mind, probably something like Walter Duranty on every news station.

Here is a short reading list that should give you the essentials:

Some of these will read like stories, others are more academic in nature. There is both Canadian and American material included. overall, you should get a pretty good impression of how political campaigns are planned and how they actually roll out.

It's probably way outdated now, but there was a great book on this topic called Unreliable Sources written in I think 1990. It builds a pretty ironclad case that the media, rather than being in any way liberal, function as a mouthpiece for business and conservative interests.

u/papersheepdog · 1 pointr/sorceryofthespectacle

I just picked this up a few days back, haven't had much chance to read yet but it begins with some amazing narrative about american wrestling (illusional agency replacement) and celebrities (illusional immortality of ego) off the bat. Very appropriate I think for this sub (and I already bought it so there is that ;)

Definitely! Visual Culture/Media Studies are my jam. There's a thousand vis culture books out there. However, the reader by Mirzoeffand by Jessica Evans are totally essential.

As far as Media Studies goes, there's a lot of directions you could start. In the US, there's a lot of schools that focus on the social science aspect of it, but my approach is far more philosophical. So, I'd suggest McLuhan, Walter Ong for some of the classical background stuff. Then, read Lori Emerson and Jussi Parikka for more contemporary theory. Again, these are just some nice places to start!

Oh! Also /r/mediastudies, continentcontinent.cc, http://www.ctrl-z.net.au/, Flusser Studies, and Fiberculture are all good online resources and journals.

u/Hynjia · 3 pointsr/socialism

I just finished his book Empire of Illusion: The End of Literacy and the Triumph of Spectacle. It's a long essay clearly inspired by The Society of the Spectacle, that pretty much says America as we know it is an illusion in many different levels. And sooner or later we're going to have to recognize the reality of our country and its vast underside that the illusion is used to conceal.

u/GeneralJakass · 1 pointr/AskSocialScience

Good question. So far I've seen the documentary "Century of the Self" and Bernays' "Propganda," listed, both good sources, though I think the latter will tell you less on why it is effective.

I suggest these reads, some of them are easier to read than others:

u/duhthrowawayhey · 2 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

I did not paint you as 'stupid.' Re-read what I wrote. You are choosing to spell it incorrectly. I chose to point that out and informed you people will judge you based upon that.

You can hedge your bet if you'd like. That is at the discretion of the School Board. In this case, the School Board is the Democratic Party.

Let me be clear: All they need to do is find that she received Classified information stamped as 'Classified' or higher at the time she received it. It really is as simple as that. BTW - [No One Left To Lie To] (http://www.amazon.com/No-One-Left-Lie-Publisher/dp/B004UQ1F3Q?ie=UTF8&keywords=no%20one%20left%20to%20lie%20to&qid=1463173320&ref_=sr_1_2&sr=8-2) might help you.

Jodi Dean's Democracy and Other Neoliberal Fantasies: Communicative Capitalism and Left Politics seems good, I've heard her talk about this here and here - she's a good Marxist economist that doesn't shy away from revolutionary analyses like Richard "little" D Wolff

And Rolling Stone is part of the machine.

Don't consume commercial news or entertainment without first reading something by Michael Parenti:

At Qwill2's request here is my reading for Spring / Autumn 2013.

Here in the Southern Hemisphere it is Spring and I am working my way through a number of books as pre-reading for one MOOC and post-reading for another.

  1. Cantwell Smith's : Islam in Modern History.

  2. Gunaratna's : Inside Al-Qaeda

  3. Enayat's : Modern Islamic Political Thought

  4. Hourani's : A history of the Arab Peoples.

  5. Sidahmed and Ehteshami's : Islamic Fundamentalism.

For a differing point of view:

  6. R.T. Naylor's : Satanic Purses : Money, myth and misinformation.

As well I am looking at Pratchett and Baxter's second volume of their Long Earth series

Plus reading for a MOOC I am doing on 'The Future of Storytelling' through iversity in Germany.

All in all a busy few months but I am enjoying it thoroughly.

Loved "The Universal Journalist"

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0745336760/ref=sxts1?ie=UTF8&qid=1474073962&sr=1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65

Uses tons of anecdotes and is fun, yet informative, to read.

u/fadedblackleggings · 5 pointsr/CPTSD

I think mentioning that sort of stuff is kind of tricky, especially if someone doesn't bring it up themselves. I think more people who have CPTSD, probably fall in the "Rejuvenile" camp..

There are plenty of adults who just enjoy doing childish things, without it needing to be a dynamic.

American culture has also shifted a TON since this book came out in the late 00's. Adults are way more open about enjoying animation, owning toys, comic books, superhero movies are popular with all, and most people have at least one costume in their closet.

u/IndustryCorporate · 3 pointsr/CapitalismVSocialism

I just happened to hear an interview recently with the author of this book entitled Neoliberalism.

You’re going to find that there are a lot of disagreements about the proper usage of the term “neoliberal” (or even “liberal”), but I think she does a good job of acknowledging that and justifying her usage(s) before diving into her ideas on the matter.

For my part, I think u/Anarcho_Humanist gave a good working summary, but as you have already seen, people are going to pop in to dispute it. It’s by no means a clear consensus, but it’s worth exploring.

EDIT: Here’s the interview in question in case you’d prefer that to what is apparently a $30+ dollar textbook.

If anyone is wondering what he means by legit feminist literature, perhaps I have a decent example. Class Matters by bell hooks made me think about feminism differently. It isn't exactly about just feminism, but she brings it up.

There are extremes to feminism, just like everything else, but there are feminists out there who are more egalitarian than anything else, which is what the original movement seemed to be about.

It absolutely is. No evidence for it whatsoever. There is however plenty of evidence for a conservative bias in the media. This book, while somewhat dated, does a good job of breaking it down.
