This is a basic list with mid-grade item recommendations as links. You can definitely shop around and find better deals, but this will give you a place to start your shopping excursion from. Considering hitting up a local restaurant supply store for really good deals.

u/BCR12 · 1 pointr/AskCulinary

I only suggested a soft version of the ladle in case you wanted to use it in the nonstick pan as well. Any material is going to be safe, its just more of a concern about scratching the nonstick surface and wearing the coating down faster. I tried to make the list as utilitarian as possible so that you could use fewer utensils for various jobs. If you want to buy a scoop for the nonstick or pans I suggest something like this. Ladles are great for scooping more liquid based foods like soups and stews, but can sort of be used to scoop from a pan. But since you have a ladle already, it just means you can get a better suited scoop for a pan.

I'd say the essentials include a non-stick frying pan, a smaller pot (2-3 qts), a larger pot (5qts+), a cutting board, a chef's knife, measuring cups, measuring spoons, mixing bowls, a whisk, heat resistant silicone spatula, stirring spoons, serving spoon, ladle, aluminum baking sheet, tongs and can opener. With all of the above, I can cook ~ 90% of what I usually cook.

I, personally, don't care much for cast iron skillets. They require too much care and too much oil to keep up to snuff. I prefer a nice three-ply fry pan (This is what I own). A couple splurges on my part were a 2 qt saucier (was on sale for $50) which is great for making sauces of any sort because the whisk can fit in the rounded bottom of the pan. I also like the All-Clad 4Qt. Essential pan, with the tall sides and wide top. It's easy to make something a bit larger with this pan.

Finally, I bake all of my pizza on a cheap round pizza pan. It's not the fanciest, but it gets the job down well.

  1. I learned how to protect my anonymity using my shipping address =)

  2. I may be misinterpreting this rule, but you can't gift Rated R movies to members under 17 because it is rated above their age

  3. Telling someone to 'Google' the answer instead of telling them is against Rule number 3, which I love because I think people are just rude and lazy when they say that. And it ruins the flow of the conversation.

    Great contest!! spoooooooooooooons

You can drum it into his head that his brain's the boss of his tummy when it comes to determining when it's full. The adults in his family decide what he eats and how long it takes, so his tummy has time to report back to his brain, but when he's eating at a normal pace and is still hungry, he keeps eating.

Next, teach him -- and your in-laws -- what normal portion sizes for him are. I will not ignore a Tom Waits poster!

I see you have some good quality pots and pans... that is invaluable! I have thrown away more crappy pots and pans than I care to admit.

But... you will need a baking tray for odd foods here and there.

And perhaps a rotary whisk/egg beater. I prefer the hand tools because I like to have more control over the mixing. (And I can take them camping and use them in a power outage!! In case I need to bake a cake in the dark!)

Wooden spoons!! I love wooden spoons for just about everything.

Also check out Kiwi knives... excellent quality. Last a lifetime.

Everyone needs a good cast iron griddle or skillet.

Lets see... what else...

How about serving dishes? A mustard pot (that's a British thing right?)

You will need some dishes and some silverware.

Whew!! Well I stuck with just the kitchen stuff, but there ya go!

Codename Duchess

u/calamormine · 3 pointsr/HBL

The recipe was:

  • 8 honey crisp - 4.5lbs
  • 10 pink lady - 3.5lbs
  • 10 Red Delicious - 5.5lbs
  • 10 fuji - 5lbs
  • 10 Gala - 3.5lbs

Cored the apples, and cut them into wedges with one of these, then put them in a 20 quart pot. Filled the pot halfway up with clean water, and turned the heat to high with the lid on. My wife threw in about a tablespoon of cinnamon and a half tablespoon of allspice into a jelly strainer bag, and left it in the middle of the pot. After about an hour we turned the heat down to keep the water at a simmer, then a half hour later the apples were pretty much completely steamed, so we removed the lid and started mashing them with a potato masher. After that we drained the liquid into a separate 10 quart pot through a large strainer. That part took quite a while, and eventualy we were putting ladles of apple mush into a separate smaller strainer and using the back of the ladle to press the juices through while the pulp got mostly caught by the larger strainer. The apple mush went into yet another pot, and turned into apple sauce. After all was said and done, we had just about a gallon of really good cider. To ferment, we used a packet of montrachet yeast, a teaspoon of diammonium phosphate, a quarter teaspoon of tannin, a teaspoon of fermax yeast nutrient, and a half teaspoon of pectic enzyme. It's fermenting in a Carlo Rossi jug.

These are what have been used in my house all of my life -- it's fantastic to get them online now instead of hoping to find them in a store or get them ordered from a distributor like my parents used to do when I was younger.

u/Central_Incisor · 6 pointsr/BuyItForLife

I have had good luck with olivewood spoons and turners similar to this. It is nice to have a turner/spatula that I know won't scratch things up.

u/ChefM53 · 1 pointr/Cooking

I have three of these in different sizes that I love! and have had them for several years

https://www.amazon.com/Calphalon-Utensils-Wood-Spoon-Medium/dp/B000NCQDJ2/ref=sr_1_6?

I have had these for years and use the hell out of them. they are still working well

https://www.amazon.com/OXO-Grips-9-Inch-Locking-Tongs/dp/B0000CDVD8/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?

I find that OXO brand is pretty good quality. but we all know that all of these things are a crap shoot. Good Luck!

u/Forensicunit · 4 pointsr/AskCulinary

$1.37 over budget. But I think that's pretty close.

u/for_the_love_of_beet · 1 pointr/Cooking

Yep. This is exactly what wooden spoons/spatulas were designed for. General stirring.

Look, you can get every style of bamboo cooking utensil you could dream of for the price of a sandwich: https://www.amazon.com/Organic-Spatulas-Antimicrobial-Nonstick-Cookware/dp/B01MZBIW4L/ref=sr_1_6?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1524593975&sr=1-6&keywords=wooden+spoons&dpID=51%252BS8%252BBGBCL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

And less plastic is always a good thing.

u/Thrower105 · 1 pointr/Cooking

Depending on what exactly you want the precise name is kind of....goofy?

You're either looking for a kitchen spoon or something called a chef's dinner spoon.

I'm thinking something like this is close to what you want?

u/teenaamariee · 1 pointr/Wishlist

oh this is right up my alley!

u/auf_der_autobahn · 1 pointr/beer

Very much a thing and not awful at all. Yuengling actually sells pre-mixed black & tans/half & halfs and they're quite nice. You can also buy pre-bent spoons for the pour-over.

u/ipoopette · 1 pointr/castiron

Reallyy? Something like that? Cuisinart CTG-08-SST Stainless Steel Solid Turner https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B007RPYSJU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_9CwvDbS4TVZ2Z

u/lensupthere · 2 pointsr/Cooking

http://www.amazon.com/OXO-Grips-Brushed-Stainless-Slotted/dp/B0001BMXJO or similar. You can also find them at most any restaurant supply store.

edit; get a metal one, avoid the plastic or wooden slotted spoons for this.
