I used to go through flights like popcorn and reached several conclusions:
a) Trident T180 flight protectors work very well.
b) Ruthless flights are super-strong compared to regular ones. Much more rigid.
c) Stay away from aluminum shafts. If an aluminum shaft bends slightly during play, it'll stay bent and fuck up your game. If a plastic shaft bends it'll either break, or snap back into shape. Either way you won't have a little fifth columnist in your hand at the oche.
d) Fit Flights are fricking excellent. Slightly heavier than regular setup (and much more expensive) but these are all I use nowadays. Consistent exact 90-degree angle means a more consistent result. I haven't used regular flights and shafts since our Toronto distributor started offering Fit Flights for sale.
And the 'sideways' thing is a grip-release issue. You'll find you're pushing the dart with either your thumb or your index/middle finger. Try a lighter grip until you've sorted out exactly how to release.
Best of luck to you sir.
Here's a few ideas for relativity cheap
Aluminum shafts with dimplex flights, I used to do this often and never once had a flight pop out.
Springs. Just slide a spring on the shaft before you put your flight on, it will be more secure, and it is best to use them with my next option.
Flight Punch. These put a notch in your flight where you can put a spring or grip rings. You will not have any flights popping out. This is what i do, I had a set of darts with supergrip shafts and the flight would always pop out. After buying a flight punch ($10), and fitting the locking ring between, i never had a problem
Hope this helps!
Im not sure where you live, but here is a link for the flight punch on amazon (US). I live in Canada and the price is the same on either site.
Before I switched to Fit Flights I had settled on buying flights in the bulk random packs from Amazon and just being really liberal with swapping them out and throwing away the old ones. ~$9 for 20 sets of flights(delivered) comes out to ~$0.45 per flight. So as soon as one starts to bug me it's not painful to replace.
Unlike now when I want to hold a funeral every time one of my fit flights gets relegated to the practice board or trash bin.
Plus I'm willing to throw with unmatched flights, especially since an opponent told me it bugged him=P
A) Not sure why the PDC players don't use spinners, but for me, they break way too easily and make me think my shaft is loose, so I lose focus and my feel for the darts.
B) I like the Harrows Graflite flights since they last a lot longer. I also like the Harrows Carbon Plus shafts, however the tips are not as durable as I'd like.I usually get the flights for $4/set and the shafts for $7/set, so they're a little more expensive but I can make it through several weeks of darting daily with them.
C) I have no idea, I just don't like them.
So, these would be better? https://www.amazon.com/F5059-Red-Dragon-Royal-Flights/dp/B00IN781IA/ref=sr_1_1
