Juno - This Is The Way It Goes and Goes
A totally underrated and unheralded Seattle band. Now defunct, they released two albums and a handful of singles, you could call them indie and most closely relate them perhaps to My Bloody Valentine. They create, what my friend called, walls of sound with four guitars all layered together. This is the band I love that no one knows about.

Essential, this album defined the "trip hop" genre (think rap music without the rap) and is a Guinness world record holder for the first album created entirely from samples.

Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein
An underlooked "backpack" rap album. CanOx is also now defunct but this album is a spectacular alternative rap album.

Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma
My favorite album of 2011 2010, Flying Lotus is trippy electronic music, I feel like this album is so next level we won't even appreciate it for a few years.

The Fucking Champs - IV
The band with the awesome name, The Fucking Champs are (mostly) instrumental prog metal with custom made 9 string guitars.

The Hold Steady - Boys and Girls in America
What if Bruce Springsteen made music for late twenty something party kids?

J Dilla - Donuts
Essential. Dilla is the producer's producer, this is a beat tape, 30 some odd snippets of beats and ideas.

LCD Soundsystem - This Is Happening
LCD just broke up but their last album is, imo, their best. Percussion driven indie rock meets techno.

Lil' Wayne - Dedication 2
Say what you want about Lil' Wayne, Dedication 2 is the best thing he's ever done. This Wayne was untouchable.

Madvillain - Madvillainy
A rap album for the heads, this was two super powers coming together and is filled with so much imagination it sell makes my head explode.

Mogwai - Come on Die Young
Post-rock. A powerful moody record.

Say Anything - In Defense of the Genre
Punk is dead but Say Anything's 'In Defense of the Genre' is a spectacular eulogy.

XX - XX
My favorite album of the last ten years. It's dark, sparse, perfect rock.

Sufjan Stevens - Illinoise
A whole album made about Illinois and it works.

Burial - Untrue
Deep dark drum and bass (dubstep, not Skrillex dubstep). When it's late and you're walking the empty streets home a little drunk this is the album you want to listen to.

Completely agree. But for album covers.. I think it's important to represent the music in a way that doesn't make it feel it's JUST a product of it's time. A lot of the most beloved album covers are pretty timeless (dark side of the moon, smells like teen spirit, unknown pleasures, led zeppelin come to mind).

The trendy-ist stuff looks pretty cringy 10-20 years down the road. That said.. that band was TOTALLY just a product of it's time.. So.. The design is pretty appropriate there lol

I actually used to be a Christian Dj a long time ago, and I've kept up with the music (I actually haven't had time in the last year, so some of this may be older, but hyperlinks to Amazon are included - I'm sure most are on iTunes as well). When you say "as good", what do you mean exactly? Jay-Z and Nas are excellent, but their stuff just seems so "watered down". I'm sure they could put out much better music if they weren't trying to sell albums. Too many of their songs are battle raps on an album. On top of that I don't need to hear over and over how rough their childhoods were, how much trouble they got into with the cops, or how rich they are/plan to become.

Mr. Lif's Mo Mega or Aesop Rock's Labor Days are certainly contenders for greatest hip-hop album ever recorded.

I agree that Stoupe is phenomenal. I disagree that Vinnie Paz isn't a great rapper. Unless someone else has been writing his lyrics for him he's got some good stuff. Not all of it is "A" material. I do wish he'd shut up about "fuckin' faggots".

In terms of new comers, I've really liked Big K.R.I.T's free mixtape, available here, as well as Curren$y's Pilot Talk I and II. I don't really like Eminem at all, but 'Bad Meets Evil' has some excellent tracks on it. These were all released in the last few months.

Saigon is one of my top 5 of all time, his long awaited Greatest Story Never Told came out a few months ago and is just amazing. Listen to a few samples if your curious.

Likewise, a big fan of MF Doom, you might enjoy KMD's album 'Black Bastards'. It's one of the most unique sounding rap albums I've ever heard, it was Doom (then known as Zev Love X) and his brother Subroc who died shortly after recording the album. The label figured that since they couldn't go on tour, it wasn't worth releasing Black Bastards. Luckily, they sold the rights to a now-shuttered indy label a few years later.

In terms of music that hasn't been released in the last 6 months, I still enjoy my Nas, Jay-Z, Kanye, etc, plus older artists from my youth like A Tribe Called Quest, Gang Starr, Mobb Deep, etc. Let me know if you'd like any specific recommendations.

This is going to give you a little bit of musical familiarity while you get acquainted with some of the more "high energy" rap out there...

If the high energy moves you along with the "grungy/rock" edge that the Beastie Boys have, move on to The 36 Chambers This is going to keep that edge and get you a little more lyricism. From there, if your still enjoying yourself, the Wu Tang tree will give you plenty to move to.
