That's all the time I have for today. Thanks everyone!

I’m a 5 time Grammy-nominated guitarist with six #1 blues albums to my name along with a string of #1 mainstream rock singles and numerous awards. My new album Lay It On Down just came out last week - buy it at Amazon - and I’ll be on tour throughout the summer/fall.

YAY!

  • Well, Haim is one of my favorites right now. I love this whole album. Lots of fun tunes to dance to, and play really loudly in your car. Fleetwood Mac-ish indie pop. This is also their debut album.

  • Lorde dropped her debut album, and it took me a while, but I'm really digging the music. 400 Lux, White Teeth Teens, and Buzzcut Season are a few of my favorites. She grew up with her mother reading poetry to her, so that's how she ended up making her own music. Plus, she is only 16. Bravado is a good song that is not on the album.

  • Little Games by The Colorist is a fun little song. I enjoy playing this song from this new band.

  • Hot Knife by Fiona Apple, because it's Fiona Apple. Strange little tune, but it's catchy and fun. Fiona sounds awesome in her vocals.

  • Fireshrine by Purity Ring is a really strange, but interesting electronic song.

I have a pattern for unusual music choices, but I find they are some times the best treasures.

  • Siberia and it's Acoustic version are my favorite Lights albums. Her first album was pretty good, too, but I enjoy the acoustics from Siberia.

I'm sure I can dig up more, but that should be a good start. :)

Rinzai is known for it's rigor and discipline. Rinzai and Seon Buddhism have reputations for being the hard-asses of Buddhism. That being said, Ven. Eshu comes off as really nice. I'd really like to make a pilgrimage out to BC someday and do a retreat with them.

As a beginner, on your own, with limited experience I wouldn't really recommend these series of talks. What I would recommend is that you look into the Western Vipassana tradition. Zen schools and their practices aren't systematized like the Theravada tradition (Western Vipassana is an emerging tradition in the west that falls under the Theravadan tradition). If you were learning a language the Theravada tradition would be like Rosetta stone, slowly building up your knowledge of basic vocabulary and syntax, with some meta-analysis thrown in as to why things are being presented this way. Zen would be like learning a language via total immersion. It's effective, but it's hard, you need a real commitment and a community to support you in your progress.

One resource I always recommend to beginners is The Science of Enlightenment by Shinzen Young. It's probably one of my favorite Buddhist related works.

For more entry level dharma talks I hope you take a look at the following links:

Audio Dharma - Recommended Talks

Dharma Seed (Great for searching through to find a talk on a particular subject.)

Dharma Talks given by the San Francisco Zen Center

The Buddhist Geeks Podcast

The Buddhist Geeks Podcasts are really interesting discussions about all aspects of Buddhism. It's not about teaching Buddhism. They're normally discussions with senior practitioners from all different sects about Buddhism. Talks cover topics such as rarified mental states (i.e. jhanas), adapting Buddhism to the west and the 21st century, meditation and the brain... really interesting stuff. If you have any real interest in Buddhism and how deep the rabbit hole goes, their best talks will really spark the fire of intrigue and get you serious about practice.

With no hints to your tastes, here's a quick selection of some of my favorite albums with some basic descriptions. Please let me know if you listen to . like any of them.

Juno - This Is The Way It Goes and Goes
A totally underrated and unheralded Seattle band. Now defunct, they released two albums and a handful of singles, you could call them indie and most closely relate them perhaps to My Bloody Valentine. They create, what my friend called, walls of sound with four guitars all layered together. This is the band I love that no one knows about.

[DJ Shadow - Endtroducing] (http://www.amazon.com/Endtroducing-DJ-Shadow/dp/B000005DQR/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1330569288&sr=8-1)
Essential, this album defined the "trip hop" genre (think rap music without the rap) and is a Guinness world record holder for the first album created entirely from samples.

[Radiohead - Kid A] (http://www.amazon.com/Kid-Radiohead/dp/B00004XONN/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1330569401&sr=8-1)
A classic.

Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein
An underlooked "backpack" rap album. CanOx is also now defunct but this album is a spectacular alternative rap album.

Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma
My favorite album of 2011 2010, Flying Lotus is trippy electronic music, I feel like this album is so next level we won't even appreciate it for a few years.

The Fucking Champs - IV
The band with the awesome name, The Fucking Champs are (mostly) instrumental prog metal with custom made 9 string guitars.

The Hold Steady - Boys and Girls in America
What if Bruce Springsteen made music for late twenty something party kids?

J Dilla - Donuts
Essential. Dilla is the producer's producer, this is a beat tape, 30 some odd snippets of beats and ideas.

LCD Soundsystem - This Is Happening
LCD just broke up but their last album is, imo, their best. Percussion driven indie rock meets techno.

Lil' Wayne - Dedication 2
Say what you want about Lil' Wayne, Dedication 2 is the best thing he's ever done. This Wayne was untouchable.

Madvillain - Madvillainy
A rap album for the heads, this was two super powers coming together and is filled with so much imagination it sell makes my head explode.

Mogwai - Come on Die Young
Post-rock. A powerful moody record.

Say Anything - In Defense of the Genre
Punk is dead but Say Anything's 'In Defense of the Genre' is a spectacular eulogy.

XX - XX
My favorite album of the last ten years. It's dark, sparse, perfect rock.

Sufjan Stevens - Illinoise
A whole album made about Illinois and it works.

Burial - Untrue
Deep dark drum and bass (dubstep, not Skrillex dubstep). When it's late and you're walking the empty streets home a little drunk this is the album you want to listen to.

(edited for slightly better formatting)

The Science of Enlightenment by Shinzen Young.

PLEASE start with The Science of Enlightenment. I would recommend this regardless but ESPECIALLY if you are feeling overwhelmed. It is the best naturalistic deconstruction of Buddhism's blueprint I have come across.

Please excuse the bold, all caps but...

GIVEN THAT YOU'RE COMING FROM A CHRISTIAN BACKGROUND AND ARE FEELING OVERWHELMED THIS IS HANDS DOWN THE BEST RESOURCE TO START WITH!!!

Shinzen will enable you to explain Buddhism so you can relate it to your Christian relatives via Catholicism's own contemplative tradition, which you are probably unaware of.

Also, NewBuddhist.com is a very good forum. You may get recommended Dharma Overground. Save it in your bookmarks, but I wouldn't recommend going there as a beginner.

u/Throwitallaway8898 · 4 pointsr/RWBY

The lyrics in the preview snippet on Amazon are pretty explicitly talking about "love" and if it's a platonic love it's a really damn weird platonic love, lol:

>But they watch us, and they know

>And they’re happy as they see our love grow

>We’ll sit for a while, as I drink in your smile

>It feels like a dream that’s come true

>My head starts to buzz and my heart fills with love over you

>Baby can’t you see

>You could be with me

>We could live inside a

As explicit as this is and as hard it is to explain away as anything else, I'm not gonna let myself get my hopes up until there's some real REAL explicit hinting in the show.

u/speed_demon92 · 3 pointsr/AskReddit

The Raft of the Medusa

Not only because its a stunning piece of art, but it has some connotations to the event of being set adrift into an endless void, in the hope of finding aid. The sense of loss and madness, the yearning to live, the desire and power of the human spirit to survive in tumultuous circumstances. It's all there.

One album, well that would have to be THIS compilation of great pieces of classical music. No modern album could do our planet justice. Sure, there are more recent choices, but there's such a range of emotion and feelings you get from classical music, it would be a great place to start any new music collection for a world.

As for a book, I think a heavily, I'm talking HEAVILY edited and modernized rendition of the Old Testament would be the best. I'm not particularly religious, and I'd hate to think the words would divide people in the future as they have on Earth, but I think streamlining it and keeping it simple, and regarding it as a work of fiction would make for a really good story. At its root, there are tons of lessons about mankind, faith, and the human condition that can be gleaned from the Old Testament. Not to mention the influence that those stories have had upon cultures all over the world. I mean, think... the tree of life, creation, the deluge, exodus, the tower of Babel, David and Goliath.... Could you imagine a world without those lessons and metaphors in some form? Just keep those crazy sequels starring Jesus and Muhammad far away from me!

u/Gabriel_Aurelius · 10 pointsr/TrueChristian

I actually used to be a Christian Dj a long time ago, and I've kept up with the music (I actually haven't had time in the last year, so some of this may be older, but hyperlinks to Amazon are included - I'm sure most are on iTunes as well). I broke them down by what I consider the top 6 genres of music that MOST people listen to - I excluded genres like classical, chanting, opera, country, etc. These are all Christian artists that happen to love making music that I enjoy. Many of these artists have additional albums, but I linked the ones I know I like. EXPLORE!!!

Recommendation: hold down the left Control button when you click on a link so it opens in another tab. ;)

I picked up this album a while back and absolutely adore it! The London Philharmonic Orchestra's The Greatest Video Game Music

This album recreates the iconic scores of popular games such as Bioshock, Mass Effect, COD Modern Warfare 2, Legend of Zelda, Metal Gear Solid, Fallout, Halo, and Tetris (my favorite) in an orchestral setting.

ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL and a must-have for any fan of vidya.

u/RandosaurusRex · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Needing/Getting - OK Go, It's Time - Imagine Dragons, Mountain Sound - Of Monsters and Men, You, Me and The Bourgeoisie - The Submarines, I Love It - Icona Pop (feat. Charlie XCX)

I've tried to pick songs with a really strong beat behind them, which is what I prefer to run to. Good luck in the half-marathon, you're probably going to have quite a few BLISTERS by the end :D

u/Jenwith1N · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I would very much love this one if chosen. :)

I know usually everyone picks tropical far away places for dream vacations. I just want to go to Salem MA. My best friend moved there 4-5 years ago and I haven't seen her since. We keep trying to make plans to fly to each other, but something always comes up. So much is happening in her and her daughter's life right now and I hate missing it. We talk on the phone and internet when we can, but she's a single mom and works super long hours at two different jobs so normally we get 5 minutes on her walk to work. Boo.. We'll get together one of these days. My fiance actually mentioned that maybe next summer we could take a trip and either meet her somewhere she could get to or go to Boston and spend time with her too. :)

Thanks for the contest! <3 Airplane!

|name|Lana Del Rey|
|about artist|Elizabeth "Lizzy" Grant (born 21 June 1986), better known as Lana Del Rey, is a singer-songwriter from Lake Placid, New York, United States. Del Rey is known for embellishing her songs and music videos with an eerily nostalgic vibe heavy on Americana themes, including images of surfing, Coney Island, Frank Sinatra, and Marilyn Monroe. She has also listed a large number of her artistic influences, including Allen Ginsberg, Elvis Presley, Britney Spears, Nina Simone, Nirvana, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan... An alternative rock ballad, "Young and Beautiful" was co-written by Del Rey and the track's producer, Rick Nowels. Contemporary music critics lauded the single, calling it "haunting" and "somber". Find a decent album with several composers and listen to it a few times. Then pick a few favorite pieces and look into the composer to learn more about them and hear more of their music.

Myself, I like Beethoven. Immortal Beloved was a pretty interesting film.

u/megatom0 · 13 pointsr/asoiaf

Here is the track listing for the OST. The last two tracks are Mhysa and For the Realm. Mhysa to me sounds like it would be the track to play over the resurrection scene. It has this other worldly quality to it. For the Realm sounds like it will play over the credits IMO as I can't see it corresponding to a scene.

u/YourKillingMeSmalls · 5 pointsr/AskReddit

I got this on amazon for 5 bucks, it was a great pickup. They have tons of different collections of the top 50 or top 100 songs from different eras or composers. For a 5 spot, it's absolutely worth picking up and diving in to classical music.

u/darrenduje · 3 pointsr/classicalmusic

Start with pieces you might already know: Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachmusik, Beethoven's 5th Symphony, etc. London Symphony's 50 Greatest Pieces of Classical Music is a great place to start (although heavy on the romantic era): https://www.amazon.com/50-Greatest-Pieces-Classical-Music/dp/B002WMP162

I found that the lightbulb went off for me when I understood the forms (sonata, rondo, theme/variations, scherzo, etc.). Being able to recognize the themes in sonata form, for example, made me feel grounded in the piece. Without that understanding, I felt lost and didn't understand what the composer was doing.

u/pahool · 1 pointr/Meditation

>I viewed the ultimate goal of this meditation technique (the agenda) was to know the universal law of nature, dhamma, and the Buddha's claim about these subatomic particles was part of this.

I'm not sure that's a good expectation to have of meditation. There's no magic involved. You are observing your own mind and sensations. I have some knowledge of physics. The only thing I was pointing out was that anicca seems to have some relevance when we are talking about subatomic virtual particles. I wasn't bothered by the fact that the numbers were wrong because I viewed it as an analogy, and all analogies break down at some point. It is not necessary to assign objective reality to the kalapas in order to see their subjective relevance.

>I am tying my subjective experience to an objective model that challenges another model (Vipassana) that claims to be objective.

Vipassana is a technique that advocates viewing your sensations objectively, without adding interpretation to them. That is different from it being an objective model of the world. Vipassana, and meditation in general, is subjective.

>But Vipassana argues that no scientific tools can be a true tool for observation. You can only observe the universe truly within the framework of the body. Isn't this claim absurd for a physicist.

I don't agree with the way that you've framed this. Goenka is arguing that you can only observe the subjective world of your own experience within the framework of the body. Measuring devices may lead to incredible discoveries and scientific "insights", but they don't lead to "insight" in the Buddhist sense. They don't lead to personal insight about the nature of suffering. They can perhaps point the way, but ultimately, that insight is born of individual experience. Goenka does not dismiss the importance of science and the potential of measuring devices and the scientific method to make discoveries about the physical universe. When he tells the story of the physicist, all he was saying was that the man was still caught in suffering, that his scientific understanding of the physical universe hadn't give him the personal insight necessary to overcome his misery.

To me, your experience is a perfect example of why I think that meditation teachers should steer clear of making scientific analogies like this during discourses. It's obviously problematic at the very least. In The Science of Enlightenment, Shinzen Young has some interesting perspectives on the intersection of science and techniques of enlightenment (mostly Buddhist, and particularly Vipassana). His work is worth checking out. I hope that your negative experience with the Goenka retreat hasn't turned you off to meditation in general. There are lots of great retreat opportunities out there, and Goenka is certainly not representative of all of them.

Do you also like rhythm games and maybe also to do some fitness stuff? Then absolutely!

>how long till it gets boring ?

OST has 10 songs, but there are about 15 songs on PSVR at the moment and more DLC is coming. Yesterday Expert+ mode was released... it will a long time until you good enough to do this like it's no challenge anymore.

Bought it shortly after launch, haven't completed the campaign yet and only 2 or 3 songs on normal Expert mode with S rank and still no song with some kind of modifiers, but still have lots of fun with it.

The Reindeer Room: A Christmas Chillout - It is three volumes of chill holiday tunes. This is on pretty much all season for me.

Christmas Songs - Distributed by Canadian label Nettwerk, it contains some of my favorite Christmas songs by their stable of artists as well as the famed telling of Polly Anderson's Christmas Party by the late Stuart McLean.

Christmas With Weezer EP - It sounds exactly how you think Weezer doing Christmas songs would sound.

The Night Santa Went Crazy by "Weird Al" Yankovic - My wife won't let me play this when the kids are around.

Christian Dubstep

Yes this is an actual release, I would not listen to myself seeing as there is no artist tags and it has "Dubstep Remix" on the titles. Gave me a good laugh though.

u/garage_cleaner · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

This is so silly, but my husband and I have been listening to it via YouTube for a bit now. Be great to jam to it in the car!

u/robertgfthomas · 9 pointsr/LifeProTips

Sure thing! I bought two volumes of "The Greatest Video Game Music", performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra:

Volume 1

Volume 2

u/videoRater · 6 pointsr/Music

This is the song from the 1987 and 1988 Crystal Light National Aerobic Championships.

Video of the 1988 championship.

It's also on Amazon, Google Play, and Spotify. If you have questions or want it released on other platforms, I suggest you contact the Association of National Aerobic Championships. I contacted them a few days before they released it on iTunes, and they sent me an email shortly after it was released, so I think they are the ones who released it.

u/921ren · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

This because I love Lana and this is a good remix.

Or This which is a little cheaper :)

  1. I had no idea how much re-writing has been done recently to the rules! WOW.

  2. That it has to be six months before you can do a re-intro post.

2.5. That my connection SUCKS today but Bleu is so amazingly awesome that I don't care bceause I can hear her sweet voice - even though it's quivery to me. (And I laughed out loud at "Do I hear a train coming - choo chooo?" in the reporting video!)

  3. That you can only have 3 open contests at once. I have broken that rule before - but I promise to never do it again. Unless I forget. (Just kidding - geesh.)

iPhone case, I have it in orange and white and it's awesome. And a book and music

Kinda cheesy, but this:

Plenty of decent tracks, good for the background, and a legit copy for $2. Also Tron soundtrack isn't bad.

u/MBgov1133 · 20 pointsr/Xenoblade_Chronicles

The soundtrack is available on iTunes internationally, however you may need to wait for your timezone to hit midnight on the 23rd of May to be able to purchase it. It is, however, available on the following iTunes store regions:

Oh, you mean Ty Parr - National Aerobic Championship Theme?

If I were the director I would do it this way: [ASOS](#b "The RW is happening as Arya is fast approaching The Twins. Once Robb and Cat have been dealt with it then shows the whole massacre in a slower motion shot with "The Rains of Castamere" being played. Then it shifts to Arya running when the hound knocks her out to a black screen playing to the credits to "The Rains of Castamere". Then I would start episode 10 with a slow motion zoom/pan out of the Freys/Boltons/Lannisters throwing GreyRobb {stuffed with arrows} into the river while the song "Heir to Winterfell" plays")

Getting the self titled album by the Luminers would rock my brains. That said feel free to surprise me instead!

u/Guyon · -1 pointsr/AskReddit

My favorite classical piece. If anyone feels like buying it (composed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and David Parry), get it in this massive dark classical bundle.

u/derpotologist · 3 pointsr/crappymusic

FREE on Amazon Prime!! And if you don't have Amazon Prime you can still listen to the samples... and let's be honest, even the samples are too long.

u/MCubb · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Oh! You definitely have to get the glow in the dark stars! Why? Cause "glow". And cause "in the dark". Oh and don't forget "stars"! Everyone should have these on every ceiling in every home! Haha!

As for me, I would love this Game of Thrones soundtrack! For epic reasons of intrigue, danger, violence, and wonder of course!

u/norotops · 1 pointr/ForeverAlone

Interstellar and Lord of the Rings. LOVE the Interstellar soundtrack.

Also not a soundtrack, but The 99 Darkest Pieces Of Classical Music is awesome.

Conan the Barbarian (Basil Poledouris)
The Dark Crystal (Trevor Jones)
Clash of the Titans (Laurence Rosenthal)
Jeremy Soule's soundtracks for Guild Wars, especially the Guild Wars 2 soundtrack, are all great.
The Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and Tactics A2 Grimoire of the Rift soundtracks are pretty good, for general D&D play...
But then there's also some great classical music out there. Amazon sells a collection of "The 99 Darkest Pieces of Classical Music" for 6.99.

u/SSTuberosum · 6 pointsr/videos

If I remember it right when the comedy video Aerobics Meltdown was posted on reddit, someone find and link the original 1988 Crystal Light National Aerobic Championship THEN someone else actually hunted down one of the member of the production team to ask if they can put the full version of the song on the internet and about two days later it actually appear on Amazon.

Edit: It appear that the song was released on amazon (November 7, 2014) and iTunes before the Key & Peele video (November 20, 2014). Can't find the original thread.

u/Floowey · 5 pointsr/southpark

Actually he has release some original albums, like this one!

u/maxpericulosus · 1 pointr/AskReddit

Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24, but since it's already been mentioned several times, I'll thrown in Christmas with Weezer for good measure.

u/lone0001 · 3 pointsr/roosterteeth

Also available for pre-order on Google Play and Amazon, thankfully it's not delayed on Google Play like it has been in the past.

I personally don't get the point in pre-orders for a digital soundtrack but hey they're there if you want to pay upfront I guess.

u/NeonGreenTiger · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Sir, you have impeccable taste! I found that we share this and this!

u/LadySkywalker · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

My most played song is Video Games by Lana Del Rey. Geezus. But I am rebuilding my itunes since I fried my last lap top :/

mp3 Well that's sort of hypocritical isn't it. Hmm. Screw it...I love her.

a more useful link (only 2.99)

u/lafoma01 · 1 pointr/classicalmusic

for $5, this is a pretty good compilation. I don't agree with all their choices, but it's $5.

u/s3m4nt1c · 3 pointsr/Music

99 Darkest Pieces of Classical Music for only $1.99. A good start to any collection as it includes a large amount of the most popular pieces.

u/TacticianRobin · 13 pointsr/NintendoSwitch

It's also on Amazon US, but doesn't look like it's on the Google Play store yet.

u/donnaclus · 0 pointsr/Xenoblade_Chronicles

I use Nintendo and Apple products despite hating their copyright practices. I don't see how that has any bearing on why you don't want to buy the Xenoblade 2 OST legally. If you hate Apple that much that you're not willing to sign up for a free account and install one app you can delete later, it's available on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Xenoblade2-ORIGINAL-SOUNDTRACK-Hiramatsu-Yasunori/dp/B07D1C6NN1/

u/Atlas1992 · 9 pointsr/RWBY

It's legit, the track listing is here and apparently there is a sample as well, but I can't play that because I don't have a US amazon account.

Not sure what it says that they've got a tease this heavy handed on the soundtrack, but I honestly can't point to a song from the volume it could be, unless it's that track that people were calling 'Home' before now

u/teal_it_how_it_is · 1 pointr/RWBY

As far as I'm concerned it can be assumed that it will be on the soundtrack since there has always been accoustic versions of previous theme songs. Heck we still don't have a confirmed release date, it's only been assumed it will be released around the same date as the dvd/blu-rau.

Edit: Apparently the expected released date for the Amazon MP3 version is June 16th

MAJOR ASOS AND S3 SPOILERS IN THE LINK.

Here's the whole list. The song immediately following [asos](#b "is called The Heir to Winterfell. And it's so sad and mournful.")

And the song after is probably from E10, but it's chilling.

u/Caprious · 2 pointsr/DJsCirclejerk

You're too late:

http://www.amazon.com/Christian-Dubstep/dp/B005NNVRYM

Edit: Sad thing is, some of the tunes aren't that bad. Take out the gospel, and they'd be tolerable.

u/ZamoGeonte · 16 pointsr/gameofthrones

You can now listen to a sample of each track HERE.
I'm disturbed about the last track (which could be used of the last scene), the name is "For the Realm", it is a harp version of the main title.
To me, harp = Rhaegar.

u/lordnecro · 5 pointsr/Music

The 99 Darkest Pieces Of Classical Music isn't bad too. But not as festive.

u/inferenz · 1 pointr/rpg

György Ligeti - Lux Aeterna

His work has a lot of variety, so if that doesn't hit the mark try a few other pieces.

Also, Rachmaninov - The Isle of the Dead may fit that slightly unsettled mood.

You can probably find more in this bargain $6.99 download: The 99 Darkest Pieces Of Classical Music

u/Amauriel · 1 pointr/gaming

I guess there's even more than one? I saw VGO (Video Game Orchestra) at PAX East last year and they were stellar.

And maybe not dedicated, but a CD of game music by the London Philharmonic exists and is fairly decent. It's worth the cost just to hear the Angry Birds theme done by a full orchestra, and I'm not even a fan of that game. Amazon link here.

u/Emrim · 1 pointr/videos

The London Philharmonic recently put together a video game music collection with that arrangement in it.

I really like the album, I bought it when it was 3 bucks. The Uncharted theme is simplistic, but emotional. The fact that angry birds was on there made me angry, but it wasn't a bad song. I audibly gasped when I recognized Mass Effect's Suicide Mission theme.
