Wash
iswas my favorite character because he was a lot like me - quirky and silly. And darnit he loved his dinosaurs and loved his wife, what's not to love about Wash? Plus Alan Tudyk is just generally hilarious.Although Kaylee is close second. Girly girl on the inside, ready to get down and dirty on the outside.
And yep, this exists :)

|name|Asta|
|about artist|ASTA is the winner of Triple J's 2012 Unearthed High competition. I sing, I write, I hum, I tap. I pretty much love all genres of music. Song writing is a huge part of my life as it releases so much emotion and is actually so fun to do. I love it when the audience feels like a big wide ocean, and they're peacefully sitting there in silence. I love making people feel emotion through song and taking them with me through the journey. I enjoy taking on other peoples stories and creating something universal that other’s can relate to. I hope you get a kick out of my music the way I do ! (more on last.fm)|

omg!! I have missed you, too and I'm glad you're out of the hospital now.
Thanks for the contest, and most of all, for the positivity you bring. Sending love and healing thoughts your way.
The first thing that comes to mind is "Dueling Banjos." It's one of those songs that, if you can play it well, you will impress everyone that you play for. Period. Everyone knows it, and everyone loves it.
Beyond that, look at old-timey stuff. Even if songs aren't specifically arranged for guitar/banjo, you can normally combine parts that are out there and make your own versions.
Here's a great example. "John Hardy" is an old bluegrass favorite. In its common form, it sounds like this. Because it's such a staple with bluegrass players, you shouldn't have any trouble at all finding chords, and a lot of solos written out for both banjo and guitar, plus there should be tons of versions out there for you to listen to and get the feel of. Of course, you probably aren't going to want to play it like a bluegrass player, so arrange it yourself and make it sound like you want. You can go here and listen to a preview of Ramblin' Jack Elliot's verson of John Hardy, which happens to feature both guitar and banjo, and is arranged to be more folk. There are enough songs out there like this that you can build a pretty decent little repertoire.
Other Folk/Bluegrass songs I'd recommend arranging: Man of Constant Sorrow, Banks of the Ohio, Freight Train, Nine Pound Hammer...actually, there are a whole lot of them.
Welcome to the subreddit by the way! I’m always excited when there is a new post here.
I personally think that Ochs is super unique in his style of doing topical style folk songs while also experimenting and changing his musical style. Other than the obligatory Bob Dylan, I would suggest you check out Eric Anderson, Nick Drake, John Prine, Hoyt Axton, Neil Young, Willie Nelson, maybe some Simon and Garfunkel? I feel like no artist can truly compare to Phil as a character, but these are some musicians who do similar types of music that I also enjoy.
I also agree with you on the cd front, I have a cd player at home, and listen to exclusively cd’s in my car. I personally have “all the news”, and “i aint marchin’ anymore” on cd. The A&M stuff just never seemed to get any releases. I do have this compilation cd with several of the songs though, here is the link to that:
Ochs compilation
I also have several of his live album cd’s, they are surprisingly good quality and have several songs from that era. These are the two I would personally recommend:
Vancouver live 1966
Live again 1973
The last wedding I played asked for a song called Chance Meeting by Act of Congress. It seemed to be a pretty great fit for a bluegrassy wedding instrumental.
The original Hadestown by Anais Mitchell. A few years ago a new version of it opened off Broadway and this year it opened on Broadway. Apparently it's pretty spectacular, but I don't know since I've not seen it. That said the original concept album is one of the best things folk music has to offer, and her follow up album, Young Man in America is great too and it feels like one cohesive piece.
Dispatch - Bang Bang
This album has a lot of great songs on it including The General, which is probably their most popular. It has some folk and ska influences, and you really have to listen to the lyrics. If you like what you hear, check out one of their live albums Free on Amazon instant download. They're amazing live.
Hey Ho is the one that's been on the radio (alternative stations) but I like the whole album (it's self-titled). I also like "Flowers in Your Hair," and "Classy Girls."
Oh, and the album's. only $5 at Amazon.
I couldn't find the whole album on Spotify, so I just paid the $5 on Amazon.
Current rankings there are pretty decent, but there's still plenty of room for improvement:
Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #627 Paid in Albums (See Top 100 Paid in Albums)

No. 3 in MP3 Downloads > Albums > Miscellaneous > Poetry, Spoken Word & Interviews

I hope you at least invited the guys who made this: http://www.amazon.com/Firefly-Drinking-Songs/dp/B0056AP2FW
They're in the Austin area pretty often and I can't imagine Firefly music without them.
Full disclosure: The lyrics for one of the songs on that CD, "Browncoats Keep Flying" were written by a local Austin author and songwriter who happens to be my wife.
Getting the self titled album by the Luminers would rock my brains. That said feel free to surprise me instead!
This whole album is fantastic, and free!!
If you like Amazon
