Oh Lordy I have a ton...I'll try to categorize them...

Best for Puppies
These are all easy toys that dispense a lot of kibble with very little movement. Perfect for baby puppies or really low-confidence dogs. These can also be upgraded in difficulty later by stuffing them with wet food and freezing, or stuffing with a large, hard to extract treat (like a slice of lunchmeat).

  • PetSafe Busy Buddy Twist 'n Treat...total pain in the ass to fill if you put more than half a cup of food in it, but it's a great "intro to puzzle toys" for a dog that has never had to work for food before. Also very easy to clean.
  • Soda Pup Coffee Cup...representative of a whole genre of "rubber toys with large holes" that make great easy kibble toys or challenging stuff and freeze toys. Some other toys in this genre are the Kong and the West Paw Toppl. I like the Soda Pup ones best because they have higher capacity and a flat bottom.
  • Planet Dog Orbee Tuff Snoop...pretty easy by itself with kibble, can be made more challenging by stuffing a Mazee ball in the large hole.
  • Plastic Milk Jug...or a water bottle, raid your recycling bin. You'll have to supervise to make sure your puppy doesn't shred and eat the jug, but it's a relatively easy and fun (and free) enrichment item. Another puzzle toy you may find in your recycling bin is a cardboard box filled with paper balls. Sprinkle some treats in the box, fill with the balls, and let your dog forage around in your DIY ball pit.

    Easy Rollers
These basically just dispense kibble by rolling. Not particularly complex, but good for the dog that prefers to solve puzzles by brute force.

  • IQ Treat Ball...this toy takes the longest to empty out of all my toys, but it is way too freaking small and loud as hell on my hardwood at 6am. Really easy to fill and clean though, as it comes completely apart.
  • Omega Paw Tricky Treat Ball...a lot quieter but it empties faster and isn't as easy to fill (or clean).
  • Kruuse Buster Cube...this one is also ungodly loud, but it takes a good while to empty despite the fairly consistent payoff per roll. It's a cube (but they also make a spherical one) and the insides have a few baffles to keep kibble from just falling out.

    Wobblers
These require a more finessed rolling motion to empty, so they're the next step up from just batting a toy around.

  • PetSafe Busy Buddy Kibble Nibble...more of a wobbler/roller hybrid. Surprisingly time-consuming for how huge the holes are, and it gets an A+ for filling and cleaning. Unfortunately my GSD knows how to unscrew it, so it's not much of a challenge for him.
  • Starmark Bob-A-Lot...lots of ways to adjust the difficulty on this one, which is nice. I had a foster chew the yellow piece off of mine, but it still works well.
  • Kong Wobbler...pretty standard toy, I actually do not have one of these but I know a lot of people that like them. They're available at big box pet stores which is nice.
  • Nina Ottosson Pyramid...very similar to the Kong Wobbler, but the hole is in a more difficult location. Good toy but the bottom could use more counterweighting for the wobble action.
  • PetSafe Busy Buddy Magic Mushroom...really good wobble action, but for some reason it's common for dogs to try and chuck this one down the stairs and break it. I've heard of a few dogs doing this, including my GSD. I have no idea what about this toy screams "fling me down the stairs!"

    Complex Action Toys
These need movement in more than one direction (or very specific movement) to get kibble out of, which makes them pretty challenging.

  • PetSafe Busy Buddy Tug-a-Jug...this toy is hard to learn but easy to master. Once your dog figures out the mechanism it doesn't last long. Also that rope gets SUPER GROSS.
  • Nina Ottosson Board Games...I don't personally have any of these because my dogs cannot be trusted with small parts, but I've heard people say good things about them.
  • Trixie Mad Scientist...this toy is cool because the dog has to learn to spin the tubes slowly or centripetal acceleration holds the food in. Good exercise in impulse control. I had a DIY one for awhile but my dogs decided to brute force this toy.

    Soothing, Low Energy Toys
Along with the stuff n' freeze toys, these are good for dogs on crate rest or who need some extra help relaxing before bed.

  • Snuffle Mat...great toy for activating a dog's foraging instincts and calming their minds. This is a good DIY project, or you can get extra lazy and chuck a bunch of food into the grass for nature's puzzle toy.
  • HyperPet Lickimat...my cats eat their wet food from the orange kind ("buddy"), and my dogs use the green kind ("soother") with some PB or cheese as a distraction during grooming. You can spread a thin layer of something tasty on them and freeze for a long-lasting treat that promotes the calming behavior of licking.

My dogs (and cats!) eat all their food out of puzzles so I am constantly on the lookout for new challenges! I'd be happy to provide more details on any of the toys I have, or buy and review any toys people have been wondering about :)
EDIT: btw this Jackson Galaxy Asteroid is my favorite cat puzzle toy. They really need to make one for dogs because it is kinda quirky with its bounciness and super quiet.

>My hands look like someone tossed me in a thorn bush.

This is a different issue. Biting is how your puppy wants to interact with you, chewing is to help with teething pain.

For the biting, This video is only 3 mins long & will teach you why they bite & how to fix it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WT0nteyHI_M

Ok now chewing. Teething is pretty painful, and for a dog there are 2 ways to ease the pain, Cold & pressure. The pressure to the teeth is what reliefs pain & is why puppy's become such frantic chewers.

Think of being massively in pain, opening your medicine cabinet and grabbing one of every pill that might help resolve it. That's what your puppy is doing, except instead of pills its your furniture & belongings.

So to help your puppies pain relief, give him things that are easy to fit inside of his mouth to reach the back teeth, and things that he can really sink his teeth into.

Heres what I've used personally,

Kong rubber toys :

[ Bone ] (https://www.amazon.co.uk/KONG-Extreme-Goodie-Bone-Dog/dp/B0115C7BL2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1491011147&sr=8-1&keywords=kong%2Bbone&th=1)

[ Frisbee ] (https://www.amazon.co.uk/KONG-Flyer-Dog-Toy-Large/dp/B000BRTADK/ref=sr_1_1?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1491011205&sr=1-1&keywords=frisbee)

[ Kong ] (https://www.amazon.co.uk/KONG-Extreme-Dog-Toy-Large/dp/B0002AR0II/ref=sr_1_4?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1491011238&sr=1-4&keywords=kong&th=1)

The above toys are great and long lasting. The nice thing about the kong & kong bone is they can be filled with food and frozen. This gives additional pain relief & more interest in the toy. We use peanut butter.

The frisbee is awesome, its softer then kongs and has a lip that they can use to get behind teeth. Its also great for fetch & tug. I've used one for tug with a full grown lab. It didnt rip at all.

Other toys :

[Rope ball] (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Nuts-Knots-Ball-Extra-Large/dp/B003TL3YM8/ref=sr_1_5?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1491011557&sr=1-5&keywords=rope+ball)

[Teddy bear] (https://www.amazon.co.uk/KONG-Knots-Medium-Large-Colors/dp/B014JZKVCS/ref=pd_lpo_199_bs_lp_tr_t_2?_encoding=UTF8&refRID=1RVKHA4CCB5FY2AGAQJH&th=1)

[Stick thing] (https://www.amazon.co.uk/West-Paw-Design-Zogoflex-Hurley/dp/B004A7X21I/ref=sr_1_1?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1491011862&sr=1-1&keywords=Zogoflex)

[Busy buddy] (https://www.amazon.co.uk/PetSafe-Busy-Buddy-Ultra-Stratos/dp/B00YHPNS8U/ref=sr_1_3?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1491012072&sr=1-3-spons&keywords=Busy+Buddy&psc=1)

[fill with water and freeze melon] (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Rosewood-Watermelon-BioSafe-Dog-Toy/dp/B00M1WYUCE/ref=sr_1_2?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1491012124&sr=1-2&keywords=Watermelon)

[Duck and giraffe rope toys] (https://www.amazon.co.uk/wangstar-Cotton-Clearing-Animal-Giraffe/dp/B01MYZ94VH/ref=sr_1_1?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1491012244&sr=1-1&keywords=duck+and+giraffe+rope)

We got the above and they can all be frozen apart from the stick & busy buddy. We've also found this selection to give variety in what shes chewing, which is important as dogs quickly get bored of a chew if its not providing enough relief or interest.

Dog Food items :

[Meat filled bone] (http://www.petsathome.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/en/pets/angus-filled-liver-bone)

[Pork roll] (http://www.petsathome.com/shop/en/pets/hollings-pork-roll-dog-treat)

[Beef hide] (http://www.petsathome.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/en/pets/hollings-beef-hide-dog-treat-small)

[Pigs ear] (http://www.petsathome.com/shop/en/pets/hollings-pig-ear-dog-treat-regular)

The hide rolls ( pork n beef) are my best finds to date. They are hard but soften with chewing, my dog uses them for both chewing on back teeth and pulling apart with front teeth, and they last for days ( 4mo husky chewing is pretty intense so days is high praise ). Meat filled bones are ok-ish, they are a hit n miss depending on the fillings. I'm probably not going to get another one as I think buying a chicken or beef based filling for a kong would be better. They do require super vision. Pig ears are fantastic for the same reason as the rolls, although they only last an hour or two.

Pet safe household food :

Carrots : Great from the fridge, cold and crunchy gives great relief. and they are good for the pooch too. Dont freeze fresh carrots turn to messy mush when they thaw out. I'm talking from experience -.-

Sweet potatoes : peel and give. They have great vitamins for your pooch, are crunchy and tasty from the fridge. Do not use normal potatoes, they are not safe.

Frozen peas : Good pain relief, but be careful as access can cause a laxative effect. Use more as a treat then a chew.

Fresh and frozen broccoli : crunchy and super healthy

Bones : Only do this if you have trained against resource guarding. I give my pooch meat bones to pick, then take the bone away when the meats gone. Cooked bones are dangerous as they splinter, so supervision must be given the entire time. Chicken bones & other small bones are a hell no. For example I gave her a leg of lamb bone recently, she picked it for the meat then i took it away.

Homemade toys :

T-shirt rope :

When my pups front teeth where coming through, she found a lot of her toys too hard to play with. So i made a rope toy out of an old tshirt. I basically cut one side of the tshirt, then cut it into 3 strips. Then I platted it. This is great as its super soft, and strechy.

Heres a video guide to making a more elaborate one then I did :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXbS-XIa-CQ

Frozen rag :

I actually used left over t-shirt for this. Simply soak a piece of cloth or a rag, and freeze it. Makes a great fun chew.

Sock and bottle :

A 500ml empty coke bottle, with the lid on, in a sock, Tied up. The sock stops them ripping up the plastic bottle and hurting themselves, and the bottle is fun for them due to the crunchy noise it makes.

It's important to mention, never give your dog more then 2-3 toys at a time. Or they will learn its ok to chew on everything.

I've posted this before, and it's a great list! Originally posted by u/manatee1010 and I have tried several:

I keep this list of brain toy links handy to send to friends who get dogs. It's getting pretty long...

Toys that get stuffed with food and frozen:

  • Kong Classic (15-20 minutes) (it sounds like Watson is lukewarm toward this… have you tried mixing a spoonful of canned food in with some kibble and freezing it?

  • Zogoflex Toppl Interactive Treat Dispensing Dog Toy (this can be a stand-alone toy, or if you get a big one and little one they can fit together and dispense kibble) (15-20 minutes)

  • Starmark Pickle Pocket (my big dog really likes this one… we put cheese in it) (20-25 minutes)

Kibble dispensing toys, hard material (good for carpeted areas)

  • Bob-A-Lot (~10 minutes… this one can be adjusted to make it harder)

  • Tug-A-Jug (10-30 minutes, depending on the dog)

  • Magic Mushroom (10-30 minutes, depending on the dog)

  • Kong Wobbler (~5-10 minutes)

  • IQ Treat Ball (~10-15 minutes)

  • Pet Zone IQ Ball (this is the ONLY toy my dogs can’t get all the kibble out of. They’ll usually persist for half an hour or so before they give up)

  • Buster Cube (I think this has several difficulty settings… my guys now don’t have one of these, but my dog when I was growing up had one. I’d guess this is probably a 20-30 minute toy depending on difficulty and what you load into it)

  • Treatstik – I have NO idea how long this one takes to load, but it’s on my to-purchase list because it seems like it’s one of the longer lasting toys on the market. If anyone has/gets one, I’m super interested to hear about it!

Kibble dispensing toys, soft material (good for hardwood/tile/laminate)

  • Barnacle (this can be stuffed like a Kong as well… I lost this one when I moved but I think in terms of kibble dispensing it was shorter lasting, maybe 5-10 minutes)

  • Tricky Treater (I REALLY like this one; super easy to load and clean, lasts 10-15 minutes)

  • Tricky Treat Ball (another super easy one… <5 minutes)

  • Planet Dog Orbee-Tuff Snoop Treat Dispensing Dog Toy – this one just arrived yesterday so I don’t have a solid rating of its durability yet, but so far it seems great… easy to load, takes the dogs awhile to empty, and super duper quiet.

  • JW Pet Company Treat Puzzler Dog Toy (this one is super easy for them to empty… I’d say 3-5 minutes)

  • PetSafe Busy Buddy Kibble Nibble Meal Dispensing Dog Toy (this one is okay, not my favorite… I didn’t like that I had to make a decision about cutting it immediately after opening. It takes ~5-10 minutes to unload)

  • Starmark Treat Dispensing Puzzle Ball - this one is new! I almost bought it the other day but haven't yet; I think it's most similar to a Buster Cube in terms of adjustable difficulty, it's just a softer material.

Time-release kibble dispensing toys (good for work days)

  • the Foobler is great because it works on a timer that rotates to the next of six, ¼ cup food hoppers at set intervals of time (you pick, the options are 15-30-60-90 minutes), which makes it last way longer than most of these toys. This is hard plastic.

  • CleverPet – this has a December release date. I’m way pumped about it and have been in touch with the company… hopefully I’ll be getting one of the first models off the line!

Lastly, there are also these two that I haven’t tried yet, so I’m not positive how to classify…

  • Starmark Crunching Barbell

  • Starmark Treat Crunching Multiball

ETA: If you have any others you like (or don't like) that I've left off this list, please chime in!

My dog figured out a clever way to get more treats... He has a specific treat toy that he brings over to me to fill every so often. He brings it over, gently places it next to me or in my hand and just...waits. He's usually pretty good about only doing it once or twice a day, so I don't mind (he has trained me well). I didn't teach him to do it, but I've started using his new ability to get him to bring things to me- whether it be something he stole, something I dropped, or a certain toy. Now, I can point at the toy/thing and ask him to bring it to me. He's actually getting pretty good at it!

The toy is this one, if anyone is interested. It's the best for giving him treats or a few pieces of kibble and having him entertain himself for a little while. It's super durable- my dog is a big chewer and he has had the same one since he was a puppy (he's 2 now).

u/shayleia · 4 pointsr/dogs

You are doing a great job so far but it sounds like you need more of you time. A dog does get easier. Since I don't think daycare is going to be an option... here are great options that can still give you a tired puppy. Also, 15mins of obedience training is also good for helping to tire them out.

Interactive toys help BIG TIME! I don't know what I would have done without them! My husky is food oriented so these are great. They were really nice when she was a puppy cause I was able to get a break in! Here are my favs:
https://www.amazon.ca/JW-Pet-Company-Hol-ee-Treat/dp/B007R6BM1G/ref=sr_1_50?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1467050903&sr=1-50

https://www.amazon.ca/JW-Pet-Company-Treat-Small/dp/B007ZQZG6U/ref=sr_1_96?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1467050991&sr=1-96

http://www.dog.com/item/jw-pet-treat-tower-treat-dispensing-dog-toy/403452/

And of course stuffed Kongs (freeze them with peanut butter or cheese, etc).
And remember, you don't need to use dog treats. You could use their dog food. You can also buy the bones with the marrow in the middle and once the marrow is gone... take a butter knife and put peanut butter in the middle.

u/BriSaEr · 3 pointsr/Dogtraining

Everyone so far has already recommended exercise, which I also recommend. Some people said mental exercise as well, which can wear her out and keep her busy. So, I'm throwing in food toys that make her work for her food (which I'm assuming you probably just pour kibble in a bowl) which can add some more exercise, both physical and mental. Kongs (which are actually not a personal favorite of mine) for when you leave are great. Freeze them and they are harder to get food from. I personally love IQ balls which are perfect spheres and make dogs more or less run around the house after the toy (my guys normally are panting after working to get all the food out). Here are some others since it is a good thing to switch it up and keep her thinking, not just use the same toy over and over (because that would be boring):

PetSafe Tug-A-Jug

PetSafe Egg thing

PetSafe Mushroom thing

Kong Satellite

Kong Wobbler

And in the event you are like "I'M POOR, I CANNOT AFFORD ALL OF THOSE." You can also get a 2 liter bottle and cut holes in it big enough for her to get food out of but not too easily. Also, the mushroom toy has pretty small holes so it isn't easy for bigger kibble (or dog treats), so you might forgo that one. Those are just the ones I own.

ALSO ALSO. PSA FOR EVERYONE. If you shop Amazon Smile (which is where those links take you) you can donate %.05 of all purchases to a charity of your choice. So you should definitely sign up, choose a charity and donate while you shop instead of just shopping. Nothing changes except you shop from Amazon Smile instead of Amazon.

Spot Play Strong - They'll get through them, but it takes longer than most toys. Wren's last many months.

Chuck-It Max Glow Ball - I don't know if she'll like this one as much since she isn't into fetch, but Wren's FAVORITE toy is Chuck-It Max Glow Ball. It's flexible, so it's not for chewing per say, more for mooshing in the mouth or throwing, but I've never met a dog who makes a dent for months. Bought as gifts for many family members with all kinds of dogs, every single one now raves about it. Must be Max Glow, not LED. Also great for playing in the dark, just shine it with a flashlight for a minute first.

Mammoth Tire Toys - Just awesome. Again, they'll get through them, but it take a long time.

As others said, also Wren approved:

West Paw Bumi - Overall lifetime favorite second to Glow Ball

Kong - The texture isn't Wren's fave chewing texture, but they hold up wonderfully. A little peanut butter makes it a hit

Frozen Raw Bones - Any bone does come with potential dangers. Dogs can break teeth, especially little dogs, or if they are a crazy strong enough dog where they can break off pieces, if they would eat them, this isn't for you. NEVER FEED ANY KIND OF COOKED BONE. Any bone that is not frozen/refrigerated is probably cooked. ALWAYS SUPERVISE. I like this brand for Wren. Ask your vet what they think for your dog.

u/travimakemovi · 6 pointsr/Dogtraining

If she's only 6 months, there's a good chance she's still teething and just like babies they need to chew. But as puppies they also have a hard drive to destroy.
My Australian Cattle Dog is 7 months and is a CRAZY chewer. We even had a similar thing where in three days we lost about 9 toys to his insane jaws. Rubber toys are great, I was recommended these and so far (few weeks) he hasn't torn through one.
Anything by KONG is good. Good strong rubber. Bully sticks are GREAT. Some people will tell you bones and antlers are great too, my guy just doesn't give two poops about his antler.
As for clothes, blankets, wires. Dogs just seem to love these things., mostly because they smell like us. Basically you have to distract them with something better. You have to be vigilant (cant tell you how many of my SO's underwears he's destroyed!).
Look into some positive re-enforcement vids on youtube to help deter your dog from doing bad things. For example, you catch her with something bad in her mouth distract with a better toy and reward her behavior for choosing that toy.

Its tough. But in the end it'll work out. Good luck

EDIT: There are a series of Dog toys called "TOUGH TOYS" that boast their own tough level on a scale of 1-10, with ten being the toughest. Got my boy a level 9 and he ate the thing in two days. so take those with a grain of salt.

Congratulations on your new pup! I'm actually in the same crate training boat — ours always removes his high-value treats when it's an option, and when he's closed in the crate he rarely touches them. I'm interested to see what others have to say, but I did have an answer for you about the chews!

Our pup also loves the Earth Animal No-Hides. We got him a 7" salmon one and it lasted for almost 2 weeks! While the material they're made out of is mostly digestible (unlike rawhide), they're still able to rip off large bits of the chew once it begins to break down. I totally recommend them for supervised use, but I don't like chews like that for crate training due to the risk of choking.

For crate chews, we use Nylabones (not pup's fave), Benebones (well-received), and Elk Antlers (he's OBSESSED with these). As these get worn down we'll probably have to replace them if he's able to pull large chunks off, but for now they're rather durable and keep this anxious mama from worrying about something terrible happening!

We also have one of these (basically a smaller-brand Kong that our local pet store carries) which we stuff with treats and PB, but ONLY when we have to close him in the crate. If he tries to wait and eat it after we let him back out (which is most of the time) we take it and put it in the freezer until the next time he goes up. That way he has open access to his chews to keep him occupied, but the super special PB is reserved only for crating times. There might be a better way to do this which is why I'll be following this thread, but it seemed like by removing the peanut butter toy from the crate, he was getting rewarded more for leaving the crate than staying in it.

Anyway, hope this helps, and best of luck :)

only here for dog advice, sadly:

I have a boxer and a pit bull, both under 2--and both little balls of energy. My hip/back pain has made it so I can't walk both of them at the same time (and sometimes so that I can't walk one of them...).

My FIL comes once a week to do their walk (when both my husband and I were working, he came on days where the dogs would be alone for more than 6 hours for an hour long walk with them).

My in-laws also gifted us a package at the doggy daycare that they go to, and we drop them off for a 12 hour day about once every other week (this has helped because it exhausts them for like 3 days, and they really work on training the pups when they are there).

We have experimented with A LOT of toys, and mine can destroy just about anything. I think this is the toy that we have that they LOVE. We don't ever really put treats in it, but it quietly squeaks and for whatever reason, they can't rip it apart. Our pitty loves these and we do put treats in it occasionally, but she just loves the way it bounces and our boxer will pretty much play with anything. this brand has been one of the most indestructible for our dogs---they can play with them for a couple of months before we have to take them away for supervised play only.

Hope this helps with the pups!

u/lordofthefeed · 2 pointsr/puppy101

I'm in a similar boat (except I've got more advance notice) and have been finding the Digital Dog Training Textbook linked-to in the sidebar to be invaluable. Highly recommend. It's a little oddly laid out and it repeats itself itself but—as it says—you're really training yourself how to train the pup, so the reinforcement works (at least for me).

Their shopping list (oddly-formatted, watch out) includes:

  • At least six chewtoys to stuff with kibble and treats (The Kong Company’s Kong and Biscuit Ball, Premier’s Squirrel Dude and Football, and sterilized long bones^† are the best.)
  • Water bowl (Only buy your pup a food bowl once he is socialized, well-trained, and has impeccable household manners.)
  • Dog food (dry kibble) During his first weeks at home, make sure your puppy receives all food stuffed in chewtoys, or handfed as rewards for socialization and training.
  • Freeze-dried liver for men, strangers, and children to win your puppy's confidence and as rewards for housetraining

My 9 month old puppy loves his benebone (http://www.amazon.com/Benebone-Bacon-Flavored-Wishbone-Chew/dp/B00CPDWT2M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1411690320&sr=8-1&keywords=benebone). I just got him his third one a few days ago. There's two flavors, bacon and peanut butter (http://www.amazon.com/Benebone-Peanut-Butter-Flavored-Wishbone/dp/B00IK243R6/ref=pd_sbs_petsupplies_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=1WFNGHN8B9FBJXC180JX), but my dog likes his bacon flavored benebone so much that I'm worried that he won't like the peanut butter one, so I haven't purchased that one for him. These last for a pretty long time. When he was a very young puppy, it lasted 3-4 months. His second one lasted 2 months. He used to spend 30 minutes to an hour chewing on it, but this has tapered off slightly.

I've bought him lots of chew toys, like a couple of different nylabones, an elk antler, bully sticks, etc. He chews on his elk antler once in a blue moon. He likes bully sticks, but can finish a 12" one in about 20 minutes, which is way too expensive for me. He never really liked his nylabones, especially the ones that are original flavored. Benebones are a lot like nylabones (they're both made of nylon), but the wishbone shape makes it easy to hold and it smells pretty strongly of bacon, which I think is why my dog likes it so much.

My husband and I took his family dogs (mini schnauzers) who had been trained out of playing with toys because they couldn't distinguish between their own toys and the grandkids' toys. One of them was never really into toys, but one of them had loved them previously so we bought her toys that she played with "in secret" (she would pop up in the front window with a toy in her mouth when we were coming home or leaving the house). You can try leaving the toys around and seeing if they move?

Both of these dogs LOVED puzzle toys with treats. Brody (who was never into playing with toys or balls) loses her mind for a kong toy or a food ball or a sliding puzzle toy. Most of these we fill with a mixture of regular kibble and treats as a way to combine meal time and play time.

Here are some house favorites:

Trick training is amazing to wear out your dog's brain and you can make major progress in as little as two 10 minute sessions a day. Check out Kyra Sundance's books:

101 Dog Tricks

10 Minute Dog Training Games

101 Ways to do More With Your Dog

Kyra runs the Do More With Your Dog website which is an easy way to earn titles with your dog by doing tricks. At the lower levels anyone can sign off as witness to your dog's tricks to earn the titles so you don't have to be in a class or anything (though classes are fun and the DMWYD website has resources to find local trainers)

You can also check out brain engaging toys such as these (NOTE these toys should be used with supervision so your dog doesn't eat the toy!)

-Ethical Pet Seek-A-Treat Shuffle Bone Dog Puzzle

-Ethical Pet Seek-A-Treat Flip 'N Flap Dog Puzzle

-Nina Ottosson Plastic Dog Brick Interactive Interactive Doy Toy Puzzle for Dogs, Plastic

-Nina Ottosson Dog Casino Interactive Doy Toy Puzzle for Dogs, Wood

Really any toy by Nina Ottosson is a good choice.

Enrichment can also be as easy as not feeding your dog out of a bowl. Try these (can be used with less direct supervision)

-Nina Ottosson Dog Treat Maze

-Kong Wobbler

And my dogs have constant access to these chewies (i leave these in their crates as well as long as they don't chew them down small enough to be choking risks).

-Nylabone

-Busy Buddy Treat Holding Bone

-Busy Buddy Jack

-Refills for the above Busy Buddy bones

-Busy Buddy for extreme chewers

Maybe he likes puzzle toys? My mom's poodle couldn't care less for most "traditional dog toys", but loves her treat ball and puzzles. Like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Zanies-Wood-Interactive-Puzzles-Dog/dp/B003DQJQ1C

If he's big on treats, that could be a good solution.

Hi! I have a big softy German Shepherd named Jack, who also loves to destroy everything. He ate my couch! Yes, while I was at the grocery store, he ate the cushions off of my sectional sofa. He also ate a glass butter dish to get to the butter. Always while I'm at the grocery store! There was blood everywhere. My vet told me he was okay, tongues bleed a lot, and just asked how much butter he ate :| he has gotten to my shoes, my daughter's plastic chairs, lots of stuffed animals, the list goes on and on! He has mellowed out a lot now, but he can go to town on some toys!

I'm not sure how big your dog is, but how about some antlers?

This is an add on, but it has lasted a few months now for Jack. He has the dinosaur pictured.

Jack has a few balls in this style and they have lasted for forever! He loves them! They also have a similar one at target in their bins for around $5. This is another toy made from the same stuff.

He has also had this shark and a few others made like this and they last at least a couple weeks before he starts tearing their limbs off.

I have this or a Kong toy on my wish list for him :)

u/BwabbitV3S · 2 pointsr/dogs

Kongs are the classic and depending on her chewing style/strength you can get super tough ones or special blue ones that show up on x rays. PetSafe company makes more a difficult Barnicle one that is pretty highly rated also.

Most tough rubber ones should be fine as long as they are big enough that she can't possibly try to swallow it or rip off chunks. Also make sure they have a second safety hole in it. The hole prevents a vacuum forming and getting her tongue stuck in it or it stuck in her mouth. A bigger toy is better than a smaller one. Here is a great video about getting your dog to love kongs and similar chew toys.

Just remember to watch her closely the first few times to make sure she is not destroying it to get at the food. We want chewing not destruction.

u/folklaure · 1 pointr/pitbulls

We can't give our pit mix anything with stitching because in a matter of minutes she strips it and we can't leave her alone with rope toys because she undoes the knots and eats as many strings as she can. But she craves soft toys.

Besides the usual black kongs and durable nylabones, we have found that she does well with JW Pet Company rubber toys. New favorites are the 8 Inch Hol-ee Roller and the Large Double Invincible Chains.

I did not expect them to last but after a month and a half of heavy chewing and tugging, they are still going strong. And although they are rubber, they fulfill her desire for a softer toy.

u/skeeterbitten · 1 pointr/AskReddit

While not a huge help, it can be good to give dogs in this situation more mental stimulation. Giving them their meals in treat dispensing toys like this one can give them something to do while you are gone. My dog loves to get his kibble out of this instead of a bowl.

Also, when my dog is dying for attention and I can't give it to him (despite hours of walks everyday), I hide toys for him and this pleases him greatly while getting him to stop staring that border collie stare.

If y'all have a treadmill, you should totally try to get the dog on it! We had a super high energy foster dog and she just loved to run for the sake of running. Luckily I lived by a hardly used bike path at the time and could just bike with her but we always thought she would enjoy a treadmill in the winter.

u/yesimnathan · 1 pointr/Dogtraining

I'd suggest a couple of things:

  1. First - Are you providing any type of chew toys for her? I would suggest investing in a few kong style toys (Squirrel Dudes are great. They have four little prongs over the hole that makes it more difficult to get the food out). I jam a REALLY taste treat in as deep as I can (freeze dried liver), slather some organic peanut butter on the inner walls, and then fill it to the top with kibble. My puppy loves it! She only gets these toys when she is in her crate and they usually keep her occupied until she's tired enough to fall asleep.

  2. Second - Is your puppy getting enough exercise prior to being crated? My little Izzie had a lot of issues with this at first. I generally walk her for an hour-ish each day (split into three 20 minute walks). I walk her in the morning before work, when I get home from work, and before bed. I just let her out for a quick potty at lunch. She's usually still pretty groggy so she'll typically fall back asleep pretty quick.

Those were the two biggest things that helped me settle my puppy down in her crate. We still have issues occasionally (weekends tend to throw her off) but for the most part, she is pretty well behaved in her crate.
u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/dogs

My GSD has really low toy drive, but he does have a few favorites. Here are my 5:

  1. Kong Squeakair Tennis Ball, Medium. This is his favorite toy of all time. He'll fetch it, play keep away with it, bury it in a hole and dig it back up over and over, hide it under the couch and throw a fit until I get it out, and lay around with it while we watch TV. I'm not wild about the felt (bad for teeth), but no other balls come close to this one.
  2. Kong Classic, Extra Large. We have the Extreme but chewing isn't a huge issue in this house and the extra malleability would probably hold his interest better. I gave away all our other puzzle toys because the Kong is way more versatile and lasts longer.
  3. A French Linen Tug with Handles. Not necessarily this one. I've had other tug ropes but these are more versatile without being bulky.
  4. This GoDog Plush Pig. I have no idea what it is about this specific toy, but Bruno loves it to death. When he wants to play, this is what he brings over.
  5. West Paw Zisc. Not a favorite in this house, but Bruno periodically goes through Frisbee phases and this is our go-to because it glows in the dark. EDIT: if we're counting chew toys, #5 better be a bully stick. Those are critical.
u/BigBizzle151 · 15 pointsr/pitbulls

I've also had great luck with this particular bone: Ethical Pets Play Strong Virtually Indestructible Rubber S" Dog Bone Toy, 12-Inch Dog chew Toy. The curved shape seems to prevent him from getting a really good angle to pin the thing down and destroy it, it's lasted far longer than most of his toys.

Congrats on going back to school! I, too, am returning to school next month... Eep!

My puppy likes to tear things up (she's about 14-15 pounds, full grown), but these toys keep her interest even after she gets the stuffing out... They have a few different variations, but her current one of these is decimated. I highly recommend you try them out for your new puppy, too! (Do you know what breed your puppy is, or just mixed?)

u/rheally · 3 pointsr/puppy101

u/hi_from_brian · 2 pointsr/dogs

I have read some reports of dogs breaking their teeth on Nylabones, and they have never been our dogs' favorite thing anyway, so here are some alternate ideas for ya:

  • Tie off a squeaky tennis ball loosely, in an old sock. Depending on the weave and material of the sock this toy will last from 20 minutes to 4 days.

  • Toilet paper and paper towel tubes, or plain cardboard sections (no dyes or tape, etc.; I often use the unprinted flaps of shipping boxes). Non-toxic, fibrous if they ingest it, and it lets them destroy something without costing you a penny.

  • Fill a treat ball with 10-15 small, soft, training treats, and watch them push it around with their nose for the next 10-30 minutes.

  • Build a treat puzzle yourself with layers of non-toxic boxes, take out containers (NO STYROFOAM), and newspaper. Sprinkle small treats in each layer and hold it all together with a little string or paper tape.

  • Like most breeds, both the Staffy and Terrier lines love to lay tug of war. If your dog has good teeth you can use something like this, or this one if they have any oral issues. Just remember to put away toys like this when you are not actively using them, or they will get shredded/chewed to bits.

    Have fun!
u/alf3311 · 2 pointsr/dogs

There are plenty of indestructible toys... you’re going to have to find out for yourself whether your dog actually wants to play with them.

In no particular order, we have used:

  • nylabones
  • deer / elk antlers (these do get consumed over time but they should last a while if you get a big one)
  • other rubber toys, e.g. at random this kind of tug toy.
  • rope toys. if you get a HUGE one like this with 3 knots it will take a long time to wear through it.
  • ballistic nylon toys. for our dog these didn’t last too long (maybe a day or 2) but if your dog likes ripping up soft stuff this is probably your best bet to satiate them.
  • finally, we have been feeding our dog all her meals in Kongs (just dry food, nothing else). it takes her a while to batt all the food out and when she’s done she will just chew on the Kong because it still has food flavor. No extra treats or calories required.
u/jurassicsloth · 3 pointsr/dogs

My dog loves waterbottles too but they seem to cut up her gums occasionally, also I've seen her swallow little jagged bits of plastic a few times.

So I found something like this in the clearance bin at Petco:

http://www.amazon.com/Kyjen-PP02200-Bottle-Buddies-Crunch/dp/B0024EG6A8

I bought ~10 of them and they work great! it has a little hair tie sphincter to keep the water bottle in and she can chew away without hurting herself.

The sock puppet part seems to last about ~60 days before it gets grody and I replace it, I normally change out the water bottle inside it twice a week.

u/dotcoffee · 2 pointsr/puppy101

Hi there! Besides the Kong (classic), we like to use a JW Pet ball with a treat shoved in there - something big enough that it doesn't come out no matter how much ball-rolling puppy does. Their treat bone pod thing is also great. There's lots of stuff out there, just depends on your dog's preferences!

u/nayfertiti · 2 pointsr/puppy101

My 7mo puppy also isn't always super excited by kibble (he has weeks where he inhales everything in 10 seconds and then weeks when it's like pulling teeth getting him to eat). We got him this puzzle feeder, which can hold a half cup of kibble, and he goes wild for it. Also he has one of those kibble-dispensing balls which he used to love rolling around when he was younger (not sure why he's not into it lately. Maybe because he prefers the puzzle toy). Hope this helps your lil buddy!

u/Pineapplemkh · 2 pointsr/labrador

We have the full buffet of chew toys - shin bones, various nylabones, deer antlers, and the most recent addition, a water buffalo horn.

Our lab goes back and forth in her chewing habits and seems to like the variety. The latest fav is an x-large bacon Nylabone. It's getting a lot of attention.

Anyone got recommendations for an 80lb heavy chewer? We like to keep things interesting for her.

u/Devil_Nights · 4 pointsr/BullTerrier

For treats, a Kong Extreme It is about to fall apart, but it took it about 5 or 6 years to get to that state. Nothing else has remotely lasted that long. Presumably the Goodie Bone that is made out of the same stuff would be just as durable, but I don't know because my guy does not like bone/chew toys like that.

As for other toys, the best I have found are the Tuffy ones. They do get destroyed, but it takes about a month to get to that point. Just avoid ones like the Alien that have mouths that cut in. That is a real weak point and my guy knew this and would rip em up pretty quick. Turn the whole thing inside out through that little hole there.

Big ropes also work pretty well. They get destroyed too, but it takes a few months. My guy loves to play tug of war with them.

u/Grape_Room · 6 pointsr/Dogtraining

My dog is obsessed with this water bottle toy from walmart. It's a plush toy that you stick a water bottle in. The best part is once the water bottle is smashed up, you just replace it! No stuffing or anything it is great and was less than 5 bucks. Easily one of her longest lasting toys. If you can wrap the bottle in a fabric thick enough, it'll be like any regular stuffed animal, just stuffed with a water bottle instead. As with any toy, supervision is required, yadda yadda yadda. Make sure to take off caps and the remaining ring, labels, etc.

Plenty of retailers caught up with this and started selling them. IE: http://www.amazon.com/Kyjen-PP02200-Bottle-Buddies-Crunch/dp/B0024EG6A8

You can also try crinkly toys. Bark box had one on their september box that my dog went nuts over, it was a flag that said "pawxford". Petsmart also has some halloween toys that crinkle as well as some in their bargain bins. They're also my dog's favorite kind of toy.

They use the bricks (bunny safe) for a perch when they want a higher vantage point for surveying their area. I used to buy apple sticks for them to chew but they seem to like wooden dowels more (pine or poplar). We mount those on the bottom of the hutch so they don't move around so much when they chew them. The toys I got mostly from the house rabbit society but you can get the rolling wood one from amazon as well: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004TS23RW/ref=redir_mdp_mobile/180-1974768-4296220

This looks like a really good list. From my personal experience, Kong toys are your best bets, because Shibas are obsessive chewers sometimes, and most soft toys are just decapitated by the end of the day. Get a hard but size-appropriate chew toy for them to scratch their teeth, like this one.

Two observations:

  1. Buy a Nylabone for powerful chewers. Your dog needs to chew: give him a safe outlet.

  2. My guess would be that the foreign objects in his digestive system were a result of chewing fixation. However, he could be suffering from pica, the compulsive eating of foreign objects. As, broadly speaking, the underlying causes are anxiety and obsessive-compulsive psychopathologies, this could be treated via fluoxetine or another SSRI prescribed by your veterinarian.

Buy a Nylabone, observe his behaviour, and investigate option 2 should giving him a safe outlet not curb his ingestion of foreign objects.
u/BigBennP · 10 pointsr/dogs

As the owner of a working line GSD, this problem is familiar to me. I train something, then train away the dog gaming the system. (then deal with the dog checking for treats before she decides if she's going to be stubborn about something).

I also own a dog that is capable of opening most doors unless they're locked. She started with paddle handles, but can even open a round handle or sliding glass door now.

I bought some puzzle toys that took, about 3 minutes.

She's also a food ninja. She can get treats virtually anywhere in the kitchen unless they're securely closed up, and I'm not even sure how that happens.

I've got her canine good citizen and am working on some basic scent training, but I have no doubt she could master much of it with really dedicated training.

Rubber kong toys are pretty durable. My puppy isn't super excited by them though. But I bought them because he destroys everything else. I bought these:

Also, this isn't a chew toy, but I've found it to be extremely durable: https://www.amazon.co.uk/KONG-Scrunch-Knots-Medium-Large/dp/B00EAN1U7A/ It's the one plushy toy my rottweiler hasn't managed to destroy.

Have you tried Benebone?

This toy is, by far, all of our dogs' favorite chew toy, and we spoil the fuck out of them so they have a lot to choose from: Benebone Bacon Flavored Dental Chew Toy https://www.amazon.com/dp/B014JXJ2S4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_.D43yb1SXWP49

I got my power chewer the 72in one, she LOVES it. It's a bit long for tug of war, but is great for fetch as drags on the ground a creates a bit more effort for her to bring back. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0017J8NDY

I also got her this much smaller $4 one as an indoor chew after realized how much damage she can do whipping the 6ft one around like she is trying to kill a snake. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000EVQZMC

Also, it's not a rope, but one of these has made it 4 months so far, and she chews it almost every day. https://www.amazon.com/Benebone-Bacon-Flavored-Dental-Chew/dp/B014JXJ2S4
