I think it needs to be more apparent to potential cat owners (and maybe current cat owners) that you're supposed to trim their claws. It's certainly not the most pleasant task, they might try to fight you while you do it, but there are cheap trimmers you need to use every 3-4 weeks.
Do this, and have out a scratching post, and they probably won't murder your furniture, although some cats develop bad habits.
ADDITIONAL TIP:
It's highly suggested to use a cat/dog nail clipper. The rounded shape not only makes it easier to clip their nails but also avoids splits in the nail which can sometimes be painful to the kitty if they're too deep.
Bundle the rabbit up in a towel. The rabbit should be held upright with the rabbit's back against the holder's chest. Free one foot at a time to trim. This is easier with two people, one holds on and the other trims, but can also work if you're doing it solo.
I use this style of nail trimmers. You want something sharp and heavy duty enough that the cut is quick and effortless, but not so heavy duty that you can take a toe off with it. The built in guard is helpful, but shouldn't solely be relied upon to avoid the quick. Cutting into the quick isn't the end of the world, but it is painful to your rabbit, bleeds a lot, and should be carefully avoided. Have some styptic powder handy just in case the quick gets cut.
