It really sounds like you would be a great bunny parent!

I still think an xpen will work - you just need to make a top. :) If I were you would build this set up for max amount of space - this and this. They are using a large dog crate and they added a second floor to it also. The person kindly shared their set up and how they made it in this thread.

Get a 42 inch xpen - then you will attached a top to the ope part. You can use a few things:

  1. Buy a set of NIC storage grid cubes connect together firmly and reinforce with zipties. Then attach to the top as a roof with some binder clips or more zipties. Voila. :)
  2. Simply by an xpen and top to go with it - midwest sells one see here.
  3. Use something like this - just google "xpen roof or top" or "kennel cover"

You can also try this enclosure that you can purchase - https://www.etsy.com/shop/DutchElves?ref=l2-shopheader-name

Or build a space with a tip out of NIC grids entirely - just reinforce with zipties to make it more sturdy.

  4. See here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KzS82KZ7ADo
  5. Great wiki DYI cage page for NIC grids - http://wabbitwiki.com/wiki/Housing#NIC_DIY_cages
  6. Here is a good set to buy.

Now you will still want to let the bunny explore when you are home to supervise. :)

It sounds like he’s bored or something outside that he can hear is triggering him. Have you tried moving the crate to a quiet, calm area of the house? I’m assuming that if he can hear people on the other side of the front door, he’s in a room where he can be easily stimulated.

Have you tried covering his crate with a blanket or something like this? It’s worked for my noisy dog by providing a dark, den-like environment which most dogs feel safe and comfortable in. I recommend this over a blanket because some dogs can grab the blanket and start chewing it. Plus, it’ll help with him trying to escape because you can zip the flap on the front door shut and leave the window on the top open for airflow.

If you haven’t already, try leaving a toy in there and cycle them out so he doesn’t get the same 1 every day. Kongs work wonders, especially frozen ones with peanut butter. That’ll keep him occupied for a while.

Give these tips a shot and hopefully your pal will calm down.

What /u/ladyspartacus said was great.

I'd like to add that if you want to spend a bit more you could always get something that looks more like furniture like this for example: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B003XN1VHC/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1420004626&sr=1-2&pi=AC_SY200_QL40&dpPl=1&dpID=511FUpFOmhL&ref=plSrch

There are also tons of covers for crates that may help make them look more appealing too.

They make a way cheaper one of these that is a metal crate with more of a wood veener which is great if your dog would chew the wood. Crate. Still pretty awesome though, especially if you live in a smaller space.

A crate cover is great for keeping them calm and facilitating sleep. I use this with my puppy - she's like a bird. The cover comes down, she's curled up and quiet for sleepy times.

And here's my baby, she's 7 months old now. :)

Also have a 700sq foot apartment and have a 42” crate with an exercise pen attached to it. I don’t think it takes up much room tbh (you can PM me for a pic of our setup if you like).

The crate has helped a lot in training. I’ve posted before about our puppy barking at people at our door and having her in a crate minimizes the barking. She also likes to go in her crate when there’s people over. I think it makes her feel safer than just being in the exposed exercise pen.

Maybe look into getting a crate cover? We got this cover. The crate looks a lot nicer with it on and it covers better than a blanket.

Even in your own home. Having their own little space is healthy. There are some decent ones that don't look like eyesores either - I have http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003XN1VHC?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage , my Corgi loves it.

Are they type of cats that will take to a leash? If so, try just letting them out a bit. You can also try a travel playpen for pets. They aren't super expensive and I've seen them used effectively at campgrounds. I normally just bring my dog and not my cat with me when I'm traveling. The dog does well on a leash and will sit outside with me.

If anyone is interested in getting a crate like this here is a link.

I thought the medium was going to be too small so I purchased a large. I think a medium would work for an adult BC. Bella is 1 and doubt she will get any bigger.

u/stoptheapartheid · 1 pointr/greatdanes

Agreed... the size takes up room but it is so worth it. We use a Snoozer Crate Cover to make it less aesthetically overwhelming

We have this for our 20 pound female and it is almost exactly the same size as what you ordered. We also ordered this crate bedding.

Important tip: Get an extra bottom cushion. In case someone gets barfy in the crate at night and messes up the cushion, you can just swap it out after the barfing stops and deal with the mess in the morning.

Haru will sometimes sleep in her crate, sometimes on the bed, sometimes on the spare bed...it just depends on her mood.
