i've been in a similar financial situation before so i understand. hopefully some of this advice helps:

the kitten will need vaccinations at 8 wks, 12, wks, 16 wks. call around, this shouldn't be extremely expensive. i would get kitty fixed by 16 wks at a low cost clinic (humane societies have these), that will give you time to budget for everything. low cost clinics are usually around $50. get a microchip too, again at the clinic (expect around $10ish).

this tidy cats litter is my favorite on a budget. it will last a very long time and it's good too.

you'll want to provide two types of scratching posts: a floor kind like this that you replace as needed, and a tall kind like this that the cat can stretch their vertical muscles on. this is important for the cat's health and for training them to leave your furniture alone.

this fountain is amazing and extremely low maintenance otherwise don't feel bad about just having a bowl of water that you change daily. don't keep the water next to the food, the smell of food in their water can weird them out.

as for food, you want to feed both wet AND dry when they're a baby. you must expose a cat to both types of food in case someday in the future they need to switch due to health reasons. additionally, kittens are little eating machines and need food access 24/7, hence having dry out constantly. this dry food is inexpensive, will last a long time, and is perfectly adequate, but honestly whatever is in your budget will work at this stage. it's temporary and kittens self-regulate.

you will also want to do supplemental meals of canned food (such as breakfast/dinner). this should be a low carb pate (not gravy etc). you'll want to feed at least two different brands of wet food. Fancy Feast Classic is excellent and cheap, as well as pates from Friskies. two other good foods are Chicken Soup for the Soul and Natural Balance but they're also a bit pricier.

you want to transition the kitten to their adult diet around 7-9 months old. that means taking away the dry food and exclusively feeding canned food twice a day. the high moisture diet that comes with canned food can potentially mitigate several future health problems, saving you money in the future.

also don't use plastic dishes as a rule, plastic irritates some cat's skin and it becomes a whole thing lol. basically it's easiest to just get ceramic or metal and avoid that problem entirely.

i think those are the most important things. i agree with whoever said to use a bell... 8 weeks is sooo tiny, it's easy to lose track of a kitten this size!

I love my three little meows so much! They are the only individuals in my life that truly have unconditional love for me.

They would appreciate some dry food if they are picked.

) Thanks for the contest.

I rotate and mix foods often so they don't get complacent, and you have to slowly introduce new thing like raw chicken. Nearly every food you see has some sort of thing someone somewhere will say is bad for ferrets but right now I'm using this as their majority kibble.

I need kitten chow pretty much always. I am fostering six kittens at the moment, plus their two mothers. I may be taking on another pregnant female in the next week or two. Food gets expensive when feeding all those little eating machines!

Thank you for this contest. I want to soak in a hot tub for real! Or maybe a cool swimming pool since it's over 100º today :)

I am adopting a kitten later this week and I found this brand of cat food on [Amazon.] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0018CIPS8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_HEU8AbJFWGCMC) I had never seen it in stores before but it has a lot of positive reviews so I was wondering your thoughts as you seem pretty knowledgeable.

I alternate between or mix these two (depending on cost or availability):

>But it's double the price as Costco.

I notice a lot of cat food on Amazon is insanely over priced as well. We usually buy food that is about $80 for a 12 LB bag which is expensive enough (bengal with a sensitive tummy). Same exact bag on Amazon $140. I'm sure I could find it on there cheaper, but some prices on Amazon are pretty high.

Cat food is always useful. I'm taking care of my brother's two cats while he's deployed and they eat like CRAZY. I love em though. The boy is like a, wait for it, Teddy Bear, even if he's started acting more of an asshole lately.

Here are my two monsters though. Jorja and Hannah!

Buy some good food, at a reduced price like this Royal Canin online.

I see it as preventative maintenance: You can skimp on food now, but you'll end up spending more when you end up at the vets in four or five years for crystals in his kidneys or something like that.

It's not much more money if you order it online... and even if you are just getting it from the pet store instead and paying their mark up, it might be $20 dollars more a month over and above the cheap stuff.
It's not too much to sacrifice.

Or even mix a high quality brand like Royal Canin with a cheaper brand to stretch it out a little further.

u/Aloof_pooch · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I buy it at the small chain pet stores. I don't think I have seen it at Petco or pet smart.

Amazon price is good. http://www.amazon.com/TUFFYS-131552-Chicken-Food-2-2-Pound/dp/B004QW33RK/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1463370585&sr=8-4&keywords=pure+vita+cat+food

I buy the small package so it stays fresh even though it costs a little more.

It must have been one of those dudes I saw this morning on the 417. About 10am, rolling along westbound at like 90 in the fast lane with his rusty POS subaru hatchback literally loaded to the roof with amazon boxes.

I live in the boonies so I get fucked with Purolator. amazon.ca is way better nowadays though. A few years ago you couldn't find squat compared to the US. It's still not where it should be but getting better. I mean, $108 for cat food? Really?

u/SoCalLemon · 1 pointr/cats

My cats did this once before when they decided they hated their food. My vet recommended this food and they responded well. I give them this in the morning and Iams wet food in the evening with an extra cup of water in their dish and a pinch of plain psyllium mixed in.

I interrogated the cats after making this post based on the replies and took some photographs of the event: http://i.imgur.com/nYSIJ.jpg

It took a little bit to get their attention but they knew how much trouble they were in so they went along with it. Loki seemed pretty nervous during the whole thing though and kept behind Artemis. When I asked Loki if he was the norse god of cat vomit, he fled to my wife. She cut off the interrogation and defended his innocence so now I suspect they might be in on it together.

Artemis was very attentive during the interrogation and after it was over he left and went to sleep; however, it was near the scene of the crime. Why would he choose to sleep there when he has plenty of other places more appropriate like the cat tree they were interrogated on? Several of you mentioned that he might be getting revenge for giving him a girl name so I can't rule him entirely innocent.

When we rescued Artemis from the humane society as a kitten they told us he was a girl and we didn't find out he was actually a boy until two weeks later when we took him to the vet because he had a cold.

vinod1978 and IGottaSnake asked why the guilty cat vomited and questioned the food itself. I think that I can safely rule out the food but in the interest of full disclosure.
This is the kibble they eat: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000GLON6U/
Supplemented with this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003SE12FM/

When I left for work this morning I couldn't find Loki anywhere but Artemis was watching me walk out the door from around the corner at the top of the stairs. I hope I don't come home to something worse tonight.

u/Holly_Tyler · 2 pointsr/ferrets

I strongly recommend that you go with a high quality kibble. It costs more up front but will save you money in the long run when it comes to vet bills and medical issues. I personally spend about $30 a month to feed 2 ferrets. This bag lasts a little more than a month http://www.amazon.com/Orijen-Cat-Kitten-Food-Lbs/dp/B00BXHHMAA

3-4 cats from a nearby temple adopted my dad, and now I subscribe monthly to this.

Dad uses coconut shells as a bowl.

Most of them are older and don't mind the dry food.

For wet food, its meat waste(skin, bones, organs etc) from a nearby butcher shop, pressure cooked with carrots and peas for some additional flavour (NO SPICES, SALT, OR SUGAR!) , but it's reserved only for the kittens.

Cats Love roasted sunflower seeds and sour cream (any fermentd milk product).

EDIT: FIXED THE LINK.

What a beautiful baby:) I found this excellent food for my toothless kitty.

u/Retroactive_Spider · 1 pointr/cats

No, you don't want to mix. You'll lose the advantages that going grain free provides. You'll be amazed at how much less they eat when you cut the grain out.

This is the stuff I feed my cats.

u/bluefoxicy · 1 pointr/cats

Okay, that makes sense. I was worried they were keeping themselves hungry to an unhealthy-degree. Like I said: if they're just eating less than they otherwise could, I'll get healthy but smaller cats, which is cool; if they're starving themselves in protest for wet food, I'll end up with sick and dying kittens.

I'm switching the dry food to high-protein adult food next week, too. It's more protein and less fat than the kitten food they're eating. That means lower caloric density, but they're not filling themselves up on kibble anyway, and the cat's only nursing when they pin her down. Fat's good, nutritious stuff, but it's not a nitrogen and sulfur source.

They do respond differently to different food. Maybe they'll like more protein better—or just salmon instead of chicken; you should see how they go after salmon-flavored dental treats (like 5 per kitten, 17 for the cat).
