never store in RO water either. there should be a KCl solution for storage, if it's a good pen like a hanna or something. for the 20$ pens i store them dry, and just check them against known pH sources and cal when needed.
years ago i invested in a nice hanna setup, but i can use cheaper ones nowadays just fine. and i know my plants, if my pen is off enough to show on my cuts i'll notice it, but like i said, i check against known pH regularly. i only cal 1-2 times a year.

this is a quality tester that doesn't break the bank. if you do somehow fuck up the electrode it can be replaced. but reconditioning in a NaCl solution works fine.
