You know, the thing is, this isn't a musical instrument, it's a toy. It's kind of like one of those teddy bears, where you pull a string, and it says "Hello". He would probably be amused by it, and would think that you were very thoughtful, but I don't see him actually seeing it as a musical instrument.

If you decide that you'd rather want a real musical instrument, there are some options:

If your price range tops out at the ~$60 the roll up drum mat would cost, then you can maybe get a cheap cajon, something like this. It won't be professional grade, but it will be a reasonably versatile instrument. This is probably something like the drum equivalent of the acoustic guitar one would play next to a campfire. If he's the tinkerer / DIY-er type, maybe a "make your own cajon kit" is an option too.

If you are willing to stretch the budget to a bit over $100, then you could obviously afford a much better cajon, but also some sample pads start to come into the picture. The KAT KTMP-1 is reasonably well regarded, and pretty cheap. It can be extended with a kcik pedal, and a hi-hat controller, so it can somewhat feel like playing a drumset. There are some other options, like this one from Alesis but those are starting to get expensive. Some drummers actually use sample pads as part of their acoustic setup for additional effects, so something like this is not necessarily just a temporary thing until he gets a kit, but maybe something that would see some use even in conjunction with a kit.

During this stage, I used "treasure baskets" a lot. I tried to keep one in each room that kiddo spent much time in. And I had basic categories of toys that I kept in each basket.

  • Something that rolls

  • Something that rattles

  • Something soft

  • Something to chew

And “toy” didn’t always have to be a toy in the traditional sense. For a rolling object, we used balls but also used shower puffs. Something soft might be a small stuffed animal, or it might be a fuzzy sock. We let kiddo's interests guide this process. If he found something fascinating and it was safe for him to play with, we put it in a basket. If it wasn’t safe, we tried to find something similar that was safe.

Some of kiddo's favorite toys from this time:

  • Baby shoes

  • Jicaro nut

  • Vuvuzela

  • Plastic tubes

  • Weighted wobble toy

  • Small car

  • Shower puffs

  • Egg shaker

  • Hacky Sack

  • Teether

Once he was crawling and becoming interested in the kitchen cabinet, we emptied one cabinet out for him to play with. We put some baby-safe containers and dishes inside, and let him do whatever he wanted.

We really didn’t buy much in the way of toys for this stage. A few hand-me-downs, and a few stuffed animals. Nothing really worth noting.

Hahaha, actually it's pretty neat! He probably would like it a lot! Have you ever seen these frog guys? He actually has a whole set, a Dad frog (bass-y-er), a Mom frog (treble-y) and a Baby frog (much higher pitched)! He'd probably think they elephant is super sweet! Thanks for the great suggestion!

u/jassykangaroo · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I love them, I used to love just sitting outside at a relative's house and being there with the gentle tings of the chimes. They're super nice about breaking up bad energy as well, raising vibration. Just like a singing bowl

u/pixelnote · 3 pointsr/Accordion

That picture you linked is called a concertina. They are a little different than accordions in the way that they are played.

Now, depending on how portable you want, you have several options. If you want something you can fit in your pack, you can always get a toy accordion. However, your options musically with that one are pretty limited (only one scale and three basses). But it's definitely the smallest you are going to get. There's also an 8-bass model, though, again, it's pretty limited musically.

Concertinas are probably your next step up in terms of portability, and they are relatively inexpensive for low button models. A 20 button concertina is your cheapest version, and will give you some more options musically than the toy accordion. The next step up is 40 button, I believe, but it will cost more. A 40 button concertina is usually around the same price as a 48-bass accordion, if I remember correctly.

Finally, we have your "actual" accordions. They start out at 12-bass and go up from there. 12-bass will give you some good beginner options, 48 will give you more, the size difference isn't all that huge, and they cost around the same amount. Another option would be to try and find a lady's accordion for 120-bass, which is what I use (but, admittedly, it bigger than both the previous option. It is still quite a bit smaller than a men's 120-bass, though).

My accordion (lady's 120) isn't super cumbersome in the way of transportation. If you're used to carrying a guitar case around, it won't be much different in terms of size. It might be heavier than what you're used to, but logistically it doesn't take up that much space. Probably 2x2.5x1 feet on the case (I think. This is a rough guess on my case size).

Overall, if you want a wide range of notes, and if you are really concerned about portability, I guess I would have to recommend the 48-button. It seems like it would be the best size to travel with (though I never have done it). Perhaps someone who owns a 48-bass could extrapolate on this...

Thank you😊 They're tiny buttons basically. I buy them at my local craft store. They're very reasonably priced. I think I only paid $3 a charm. I'd tell you the label, but I unwrapped them all to save space haha. I'll try to remember to look next time I'm out 😺

I'm an audio engineer and i love recording instruments

So literally ANY musical instrument that carry's a tune or a unique sound is always my favorite gift, I just hook my mic up and work some magic in my DAW

It doesnt even have to be expensive either - A little 10$ thumb piano was one of the favorite gifts I've ever gotten, I could unscrew the thing holding the keys down and tune it to any scale or pattern i wanted. So even if it came out of tune i could tune it

I totally hope one day someone gets me one of these It would make me so happy.

I honestly dont think i could get tired of getting musical instruments as gifts, But i dont think i want to test that theory haha.

Just, as a left handed player, dont get me a guitar. The first thing I'll end up asking is "The place you bought that from offers returns... right?"

u/manitoulove · 8 pointsr/yoga

Came here to say this! My BF gave me a chimes and hand cymbals similar to these as 200TT grad gift. Love them so much! Inexpensive and thoughtful gift. They are so portable - easy to take anywhere.

I went for this. I got it just before the uk game expo and it's possibly the best boardgame related purchase I've ever made. It's really, really sturdy, reasonably padded, can be carried like a carrier bag, as a rucksack, and as an over the shoulder bag, it's not officially waterproof but it been keeping the rain off well.

I've got a half mile walk to my lgs and do it every week, I had it stuffed full and on my back back and forth to our hotel at the expo and it just worked brilliantly. It holds 7 standard (TtR, Kingdom Builder, Eldritch horror) sized boxes with space around the edges for little boxes and there's a zip pocket of the side. I've managed to take 13 games, drinks, snacks, and a little brolly in this and it's still been really comfortable on my back.

Obviously it's £30 not £15 but it's the price of a game to make hauling games around an absolute breeze, couldn't be happier with it.

Given based off what you have provided, she might be interested in something like this singing bowl? they are great for meditation. Or maybe a Yoga Wheel to help her stretch. The Adult Coloring Books are always fun, especially paired with a bottle of wine.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
I think this guiro would be a big help with my band, seeing how I want to get something for our drummer to use at acoustic gigs. You're a beautiful person. Have a nice day.

u/Katrinal3l · 2 pointsr/witchcraft

The guy I bought my crystals from told me he bought his online for about $120+ if i remember correctly. It was probably glass/ceramic and was pretty big though. But then again, occult stuff isn't really a big thing in my country so I'll have to buy mine online. So chances are it could be close to $100 with shiping if I decide to get one.

Edit: Found it on Amazon. It's this one. I also found some for like 20-30 bucks. Though those are metal and are like 3.7 inches.

I take the ages they put on the side of the box as a guideline. It's certainly not a hard and fast rule.

My son is turning 1 next month, and I bought him some musical stuff like this and this since he loves the shaker egg

You can get a $10 cowbell but you'll hate yourself every time he uses it. Do yourself a favor and don't buy a ear-piercing percussion. Maybe go for something cheaper like wood blocks. Not versatile as a cowbell maybe, but still cool.

Also I'd like to add they can be mounted on the bass drum

Rhythm. With rhythm/timing, even a novice can sound good with some bum notes and less musical lines. Without it, even "good" players will sound pretty bad.

My tip? Instead of just saying just metronome practice, buy an egg-shaker next time you're at a music shop. Put on some music and see how good you are at just getting the rhythm.

I could always sense the rhythm and feel it, but it wasn't until one of these puppies was put in my hand that I realised just how far out I could be.

Cajon (percussion)

Melodica

Ocarina

Kalimba

Beginner violin

Tin Whistle

Recorder

A lot of these may seem simple to play (or not "real" instruments), but proficiency in even these type of instruments is good. And as someone has already said, buying used opens up more possibilities.

u/kikikza · 5 pointsr/NoStupidQuestions

It's some kind of wood percussion instrument (perhaps a frog), with a lot of pitch correction, speed increase, and other pieces of audio engineering

Also, there's many videos on how people for movies will get sound effects, very interesting to watch:

Meinl has kits. I purchased one and assembled/stained it myself.

You can buy them on Amazon

Here are a few pics of mine: one

Cheaper and more customization if you already have wood glue, clamps, etc..
I also highly recommend an orbit sander.

An Egg Shaker. Seriously, easiest way to get unique shakes and rhythm is just do them yourself instead of clicking them in in your DAW
