Stay away from pallets please, cough up some money and some time (if you go to a box store) getting some okay dimensional lumber for projects.
If you decide to go the hand tool route, I've got all sorts of info and what not, I'd share. (Im a historical furniture maker's apprentice, I like to think I've got some decent knowledge) I've included a list here if thats the route you go.
Used this list for a couple posts, its about $200ish in all to get you started. This list uses chisels in lieu of say a router plane for dados and doesn't have an option for grooves but that's later down the road. I've got a big enthusiast list as well if you'd be interested.

Typically an old hand scew clamp would have been used to clamp to the blade. You sit the clamp on the saw table top and tighten it down on the blade. The table top then prevents the blade from spinning.

You can also just make your own blade clamp by butting the saw blade against a sacrificial piece of wood with the fence on the other side (blade wood fence sandwich), then clamping the blade to them.

The clamp in a vise is one of the worst experiences of my woodworking life. 2.5/10 would not recommend unless you have no other option.
But you are a woodworker. You have an option. If you have a vise, you have a bench. Drill a hole in it. Or a few holes. Drill another hole that lines up with those in your vise chop.
EDIT - I should clarify and state specifically BAR clamps. I use hand screw clamps in a vise all the time to hold things either vertical or at odd angles for shaping/rasping/spoke shave/sanding work. That works quite well
