Maybe two things: rope length and / or how you are holding your arms. I personally prefer a shorter rope, but a lot of people use longer ropes. From what I've seen, when people use longer ropes, in order to compensate for the length and avoid the rope bouncing off the ground they often hold their arms higher and too far out from their body. They also seem to hold their arms stiff and straight. This results in your shoulders doing extra work to keep your arms out and elevated. If you like a longer rope, then you need to bring your elbows in near your body and bend your forearms UP at the eblow to compensate for the length rather than sticking your arms straight OUT. Mayweather uses a longer rope, watch his arms in this video, bent at the elbow with forearms pointing forward rather than straight out (from 00:20 - 00:40 you get a good look): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5m1O5niSr0&t=60s. Stick your arms straight out from your body at 45 degrees and do arm circles, then hold your amrs like Floyd and do arm circles, you can feel your shoulders doing more work straight out. Also, most of the motion should come from your wrists and up / down body momentum, not from moving your arms.

Now, I like a shorter rope, going maybe a little over a foot from the top of my head. This allows me to relax my arms down near waist with may hands relatively close to my body. I also prefer this type of rope...

https://www.amazon.com/Ziyue-Fitness-Premium-Crossfit-Boxing/dp/B019XUVDDU/ref=sr_1_12?s=exercise-and-fitness&ie=UTF8&qid=1499450328&sr=1-12&keywords=jump+rope

...because it has more substance and bearings in the handles, I find it makes the motion much smoother. I find those skinny plastic ones have too much air resistance and it's hard to get a good rhythm but maybe I just haven't used a good one (they are supposed to be speed ropes after all I guess).

So, I would buy your own rope, maybe try two different types (skinny speed one and thicker with bearings one), and experiment with adjusting the length and your arm position until you find what is comfortable and relaxed for you.

I'm not sure about the "weighted" part of the jump rope but it's really important for the rope to have some stiffness to it.
I use this rope and I'm happy with it. The rope is a stiff PVC plastic with a bit of weight to it, and it's easy to adjust.

One thing is that, when I started, even with the right rope, I could barely get 5 turns without tripping up. Here's how you start: Set a timer for 5 minutes, for the first couple of weeks you're will practice for 5 minutes a day. Don't worry about your heart rate, don't worry about actually getting your cardio workout yet, just practice the motion. Rest when you need to. It will click, like riding a bike.

Once you can start doing 30-60s at a time, starting to feel good cardio from it, then you can work it into a cardio program. My current program is 60s of jumping, 15s of rest, repeat 9 times, and I'm increasing every week.

Also, if you do get a PVC rope, since it's the summer, tie a couple knots in it before you size it. The plastic will shrink a bit when it gets cold again and you can undo the knots to make up for that.

edit: also, just FYI, there are days when I am "one with the rope" and every jump is perfect and days when I trip up once a cycle. That's just part of it.

This jump rope from my Miscellaneous wishlist would definitely help me get my excercise! I'm terrible at skipping, and I'm awkward as Hell whenever I try, but its a super great work out and I have a ton of fun doing it!

Thanks for the contest! It's definitely a great one!

Jump rope! It's easy, doesn't require a lot of expensive equipment, and can really get your heart rate going. I love jumping rope for a cardio boost. Get a good rope (I recommend this one. It's length is adjustable and it's motion is very smooth.) and try to do a certain number of jumps a day. Doing a 1000 jumps and you'll be feeling it.

I have a crossrope and it's a great rope but let me just say, even the 1lb rope is fucking hard work. I don't regret it at all but I'm a long way from even bothering to take the 2lb rope out of the box. My advice would be to take baby steps if you've just been using a standard ~ 0.25lb rope so far. Get the GoFit 1lb try it out and if you like it and want a higher quality version then spring for the crossrope. Crossrope is good but yeah that price tag, I wish they did a 0.5 lb / 1lb combo instead.

Here's the amazon page for the 1.5lb GoFit w/ some reviews btw: https://www.amazon.com/GoFit-Harper-Training-Handles-1-5-Pound/dp/B0064OOSNQ/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=gofit+jump+rope&qid=1563898197&s=gateway&sr=8-6

I've found that expertboxing.com has really basic beginner's workouts. With being a hockey player, I'm sure your cardio is already pretty good. I'd recommend buying a jump rope. You can buy a cheap speed rope for about $10 here. Obviously you don't have all of the equipment in that article, but hopefully that does you some good.

u/Rexob85 · 1 pointr/jumprope

I suggest something lighter before going straight to 1lb. There's a HUGE difference between a speed rope that may weigh ~3oz and 16oz. However, if you want a ~1lb rope, Rush Athletics makes a rope that weighs .9lb found Here on Amazon. The other option is CrossRope which is a really great system, and costs more. However, it offers a LOT of flexibility.

Fifer Scissors every other day. Jump rope every day. I don't do every work out they show in the jump rope video, mostly the cross step, side straddle, diagonal straddle, and half scissor step. All of which are in the first 3 minutes of the video. Get a speed rope and as you get better try to get faster jumps with less height.

As for strength training, I do pushups, pullups, handstand pushups (I use pushup bars or parallettes to gain more range of motion), chair step ups (use a fairly high chair to get the Glutes in play), bodyweight rows (I use two bar stools with backs, a 2 inch thick dowel, and my couch to prop up my feet), and bodyweight forearm workouts. Figure out how much rest you need between workouts. I only do these workouts once a week.

Agreed on rope choice. You have to develop great feel for speed ropes and they are not a great beginner option.
Crossrope is my favorite and has the ability to push you a lot more do to the interchangeable weighted ropes.

Here is a good affordable option that would also be great for getting you started.

Both of these can be used on most surfaces. I have been jumping rope for over 10 yrs and have to disagree with the idea that jump roping on concrete is bad. If your wearing shoes and not doing a bunch of doubles and triples your fine. If doing it properly, you just don't jump high enough to do damage. People jogging on roads are at far more risk imo. That being said, a mat is never a bad idea.
Concrete does wear down ropes faster so I always choose the smoothest surface possible.

If you've got an old rope you don't mind destroying cut the handles off and attach whiffle balls to the ends using a nut and bolt. Like this, or you could just buy that one for 15 bucks. Great for training cadence.

u/Juliasphate · 2 pointsr/Fitness

You can always get a ropeless jump rope, but I'm going to go with everyone else and say that finding a spot outside like a park would be better than jumping indoors.

Thank you for your feedback. I’ve had $10-$15 ropes last for more than a year. I went and bought this rope based on the reviews.

Where do you live? Maybe I can mail you one.. Or maybe sportcheck does international shipping?

EDIT: amazon.com seems to carry it: http://www.amazon.com/Reebok-Adjustable-Speed-Jump-Rope/dp/B003PAXCZ2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1310850977&sr=8-1

EDIT: Also i like the standard 2mm steel rope which you can get in any construction supplies store even better than their plastic coated one.. Less air resistance = more speed.. Also you can just chip off the extra rope after you found your optimal length. The length adjustment on this thing is nice, too, but I like it cut to my specification better.. One of these days I'll do a video showing my regimen and my rope :D
