From Season 12: Summertime Supper

TESTING NOTES

WINNER:
Pyrex 2-Cup Measuring Cup - $5.99

> The unbeatable traditional version of the Pyrex Liquid Measuring Cup is back on the market.

2 others were RECOMMENDED:

  • Good Cook by Bradshaw International 2-Cup Measuring Cup - $3.99

    > While we’d prefer a cup that feels more substantial, this lightweight, crisply marked model was accurate and easy to read and provided all the measurements we needed—and no more. Its thin, clear walls and slim gradation lines ¬provided unambiguous readings. Most testers found it “easy and basic.” And it’s cheap.

  • Arrow Cool Grip 2.5-Cup Measuring Cup - 11.80

    > We liked this simple plastic cup with its blue, easy-on-the-eyes markings and stay-cool handle. Rounded corners made it easy to scrape out sticky honey. One quibble—the manufacturer got greedy, squeezing in 21/2-cup markings right up to the rim, where liquids are likely to spill.
  • Glad Press'n Seal Plastic Wrap - $4.56 per 100 square feet
  • Saran Cling Plus Wrap - $1 per 100 square feet

2 others were RECOMMENDED WITH RESERVATIONS:

  • OXO Good Grips 2-Cup Angled Measuring Cup - $9.99
  • Wilton 2-Cup Liquid Measure - $10.78

So. This may simply be because the pressure/movement for breast versus bottle is different and may be causing more pain. It's likely temporary and will abate as his symptoms decrease.

But. This was a huge reason I could not return to work. My middle child would simply not take a bottle.

ALSO, BUT! I did not know about several methods of feeding that might work in this situation. Try a syringe (pediatrician might be able to give you the nice big ones that will fit several ounces) and have the caregiver gently squirt the milk towards the back of the mouth. (They cannot be impatient!) You can do something similar with a spoon...and spoon the milk into the baby. You could also attempt a soft-sided cup (maybe something like this? - there were actual silicone cups on amazon but many were very large or were stiffer/thicker/wouldn't allow someone to pinch the cup to make the 'pouring' part smaller...to help gently pour a little milk into the baby).

I hope you find a solution!

(ETA: Here's a proper infant feeding cup and it looks like the $6 version from amazon would work just fine!)

I stopped having this problem once I finally accepted my own personal failings and purchased a rice measure (although I ended up buying a rice storage bin that had a measuring cup too)

I personally got this, bloody great storage if you eat a fair bit:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000HFXP78

Or just the measuring cup alone:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Inomata-chemical-rice-measuring-cup/dp/B004NOEJS8/

There's also smaller ones that are like the cereal dispensing things, but I preferred one i can chuck in the drawer and wheel out a bit.

Usually I put one scoop of that in my rice cooker, with I think 200-300 ml of water, then 150 in the heating element bit.

Not too sure about hob but yeah.

Get a measuring scoop, sort your life out, ladies will love you, men will want to be you, your friends will stop laughing behind your back and if they don't then you can knock them out with a big bag of rice that you can now successfully cook without feeding an army!

If you can get and afford the items in non plastic materials I think you should go for it! :) that’s actually how I want to do it when I move out (praying my mom won’t shower me in all her old things...)

My boyfriends family actually has this measuring cup. Don’t know how popular the brand is outside of Germany... sorry. You have to take real good care of it (dry it proper).
If you have more items (list specific stuff) I bet people can help you out with ideas :)

Good luck with finding what you are looking for:)

Depending on the PH of your water, you might only need a little bit of PH Down Solution (an acid) and some sort of nutrient solution. The nutrient solution that worked best for me when I was doing lettuce was the DynaGro Grow. One step, no mixing A B and C.

Amazon Link

I bought a gallon of PH Down from my local hydro shop, with their logo and everything, it was like 10 bucks for a gallon. I still have 3/4 left after almost 2 years. You could just use this one in case you really need to. I found out that DynaGro lowers the PH at an Ideal level.

You should have a PH probe and a TDS probe. They make some cheap ones like these two. You might need to calibrate them often, so you need this and this

I use This to measure my nutrients. You can get the same one at walmart for 10 bucks. But you have to go to walmart, and that to me is not worth the savings.

Try to find the "Recipe" you need for your reservoir. I calculate my towers have about 20 gallons of water up to the hole where the wire from the pump comes out of. Once you have everything measured write it down somewhere and take notes. I do a full reservoir change at the end of every crop. Lettuce wont grow again once you harvest it. Make sure you clean your tower really well to avoid salt buildup.

I get my seeds from http://www.johnnyseeds.com/

I've had great success with [this one] (http://www.johnnyseeds.com/vegetables/lettuce/romaine-lettuce-cos/sparx-lettuce-seed-3156.html) and This one

You can also use your own Rockwool and make sure you get one of These.

I have something very similar to this but I can't find the exact one. You start your seedlings with that.

Let me know if you wanna go deeper down the rabbit hole. Sorry for the wall of text. And also, sorry about your wallet.

Good luck!

Does it count if I took one earlier? My husband and I went for a walk this morning (well, afternoon) and I took this! :) Either way, I'm going out again soon (it feels great here), so I'll find something pretty! :D I don't know how I'm gonna' prove it yet, though, lol. Mother nature made me happy today!

Here's something in that range. :)

Edit: I couldn't find any super pretty flowers, but I took this before we came back inside! :) I like trees, lol. Here is my proof that it was today!

Broth is easy and delicious. It's hard to screw up, especially when done low and slow in a crockpot. So please enjoy.

Cooking beforehand can add flavour to meats, and can help give them structure during the canning process. This is especially true if you lightly fry them before canning -- the outside will undergo the Maillard reaction, resulting in the production of complex (and tasty!) flavours.

I suspect if you're only boiling your raw meats, without the Maillard reaction occurring, then I don't think it makes a lot of difference in terms of tenderness or flavour either way. The only other thing I can think of is for fattier meats cooking before you can gives you an opportunity to skim off whatever fats liquify during cooking to keep them from spoiling your canned goods (fats can prevent a proper seal if they siphon; as well fats can go rancid and affect the taste of your canned goods during storage). This is especially important if you make and sort of meat stock -- be sure to remove the fat before canning^0. Leaving the fat in gives your broth a nasty greasy feeling -- the richness in the broth should come from the gelatine extracted from the bones, and not from the animal fats in the bones and meat.

HTH!

-----
^0 -- I use two methods for skimming fat from stock. If I'm canning the stock immediately, I'll use a fat separator. If I'm going to do the canning another day, I'll put it in one or more wide-mouth jugs and put them in the refrigerator overnight; the fat will float to the surface and solidify, at which point you can carve it out with a spoon.

u/saltyteabag · 1 pointr/tea

Sounds like a pretty solid plan. And if you heat it up to boiling you can just fill something like this to cool a some down. It'll bring the water from boiling to around 180 in about 10 seconds.

Definitely let us know what you think once you've had a chance to test it out some! Hopefully you enjoy it as much as I do mine.

u/aerrin · 3 pointsr/BabyLedWeaning

I have these ones, too, have for several years. I'm often too lazy to fill them up, but they work well and my kids love them.

If you buy refillable pouches, get a long-spouted cup to fill them with (like this ). Also, the dishwasher doesn't ever get them clean - I clean them with a bottle brush.

u/devilbunny · 2 pointsr/Cooking

Can opener: just get something small. I've always considered buying one of those that cuts around the side rather than the top, but frankly the regular kind works well enough I've never bothered.

Measuring: I use Pourfect (it's available in other colors, just search), because not only are the pieces easy to use and clean (and labeled in English and metric with raised lettering, not printed on), but the larger wet measure bowls have pouring spouts and marks on the inside for smaller units - the 1 cup measure is labeled for every 1/4 cup, for example.

If you truly want to do proper stir fry in a wok, an electric stove isn't going to cut it. Go buy a propane burner that can put out serious heat - I got one from Bass Pro for maybe $40-50 that does 60k BTU max output.

u/thehomiesthomie · 5 pointsr/starterpacks

Not sure if they have the same things on international amazons (if these don’t ship internationally), but if you like following American recipes and don’t like converting them by hand you can get little measurers pretty cheap: https://www.amazon.com/Betty-Crocker-84197-Measuring-Cups/dp/B0041F04WY/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Cup+measures&qid=1551312124&s=gateway&sr=8-1

u/snarkle_au · 2 pointsr/Cooking

Some measurements can definitely work out being converted to weight for dry ingredients. I’ve used conversion tables from google when I’ve gotten stuck.

I would imagine you could definitely get some shipped over from eBay or Amazon in the UK pretty easily. I love my Joseph Joseph set.

I've tried a couple of the budget brands (Hamilton Beach, KitchenAid, and Oster) and they never made a great smoothie. I ended up buying a Nutribullet in November and have used it every day since. I also bought 32 OZ Jumbo Cups on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/NUTRIBULLET-LARGE-HUGE-AUTHENTIC-ACCESSORIES-REPLACEMENT/dp/B00K1J0YAQ/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1420050290&sr=8-2&keywords=nutribullet+32) which are awesome if you tend to over pack your drinks with greens like I do.

One trick that really helps regardless of what brand you choose is to blend your greens (spinach, kale, lettuce, etc.) with your liquid BEFORE you add your other ingredients. It really helps smooth out the texture of the greens and will help reduce that gritty texture.

I feel like everyone should have one well made and easy to use measuring cup.

I've been twisting and turning for years to measure stuff, hah! It would be nice to simply look down, and pour. :)

u/TheRealBigLou · 1 pointr/Cooking

I have a set of spoons like these and a set of cups like these.

These are without a doubt the best measuring utencils I've ever owned. The magnets in the center of the handles make them stay together when stacked and I love that the spoons have both bowls and scoops. The bowls are perfect for liquids and the scoops are great for digging out dry spices from containers.

Perhaps a lid to a fat separator?

For anyone that uses the OXO 32 oz/1 liter measuring cup, I just checked mine against a calibrated .01gram scale and the 300ml mark was only off by ~2ml

u/PirateKilt · 1 pointr/Cooking

Probably not much help now, but for the future, you should get a Fat Separator
