So to put on scientific man, this misconception is due to studies which showed smiling makes you happy. But what the studies really showed is being forced to smile makes you happy. One way is to put a pencil in your mouth horizontally without using your lips, which will give you on average more happiness than using your lips.
So the advice is to make yourself genuinely smile (not fake smile, that makes it worse) , i.e watch something you find funny or think of an image that makes you smile.
(I'm taking this from 59 seconds hope it helps :) )

I agree it does. And I believe there's science to show it. When someone on my team at work takes a knock to their confidence because of a set back I ask them to spend ten minutes thinking about what they have learned and to compose an email for me. First time around they think it's for my benefit when it's actually from them. IIRC it's one of the lessons from 59 seconds

Sounds similar to Richard Wiseman's 59 Seconds.

Thought I recognised the guy, It's Richard Wiseman, really enjoyed his books.
'Quirkology' was pretty decent but '59: Seconds' really captured and held my attention - a nice little book that's easily broken down into interesting chunks that you can pick up and read at pretty much any time.
