There is nothing you can do about the need for extra light, but you don't need to run out and buy Klieg lights. I have made a couple with a FWB, and he uses florescent lights like you would find in a garage - mostly because we filmed in a garage :)
You need a tripod for your phone, nothing expensive is required, we have this one and it is more than adequate. I love that the legs are flexible and can be put pretty much anywhere.
Have fun, and know that it is addictive.

This may be cost prohibitive but most "smart watches" will have a feature that lets you remotely take a picture.

and you're in business! I've had terrible luck with the timer function in my phones camera .

also i tend to just take pics/vids of my kids. i remember what i look like. also if you have more than 1 kid. let them have a turn taking the pictures and you can get you+ kid pictures that way :)
