I have traveled to Europe quite a few times now (my sister & her family live in England. Here are some things I wish I knew beforehand -

1- Check the airlines website for the size (dimensions) of carry-on luggage allowed. It is usually smaller than what is allowed on domestic flights.

2- You can only have one small see through bag (like a quart sized zip lock bag) to hold all liquids with you (not in your checked bags). ALL liquids have to all be in that one bag when going through security. My first time in London Heathrow I almost missed my flight home - it took an hour the extra security screening (security goes through all your carry-on & personal item/purse. I had a small bottle of hand sanitizer in my purse that I forgot to put in the bag. If it doesn't all fit in the quart sized bag, put it in your checked luggage.

3 - Download the airline's app to your phone. You can check into your flight before getting to the airport & save some time standing in line.

4 - Take at least 2 pens! There is paperwork to fill out, and the folks in customs never have extras & they just dgaf - you're on your own. Take a few pens in case some poor soul like me is in line with you & didn't pack one.

5 - Get a little cash in the currency of any country you'll be in for emergencies (including layovers) or take more than one credit card. I was coming home one time & had a long layover in Nova Scotia. I had gotten rid of all my cash & didn't even have US $, I only took one credit card that trip. Guess when the bank decided there may be fraudulent activity on my card? Yep, apparently sometime over the Atlantic. I had slept through the in-flight meal & I was then stuck in the airport with no money for 5 hours starving & jet lagged.

I also would recommend packing cubes if you don't have them! It's astounding how much room they save.

One thing I have that is absolutely not necessary is a foot hammock. It hangs from the tray table in front of you. Made flying coach for 10 hours immeasurably more comfortable.
