Well yeah, which is why my wife got me this for Christmas.

Are you in the US? You can buy both switches and a single keycap individually on WASD Keyboards for about $6 including shipping. Or you could splurge and buy this $9 switch tester.

> which have a better feel the Cherry red or brown

That's really a matter of personal taste. I prefer brown switches, personally, but it's something you really won't know until you try them out.

https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/wiki/switch_guides

That's got a ton of helpful information, but it's really something you should try and test out in-person if possible. If you're near a MicroCenter, I've seen demo boards out for people to test out the various kinds of switches. If you aren't, Best Buy might have a couple of Cherry mechanical keyboards you could test out.

You could also order a switch tester from Amazon if you can't get into a store to take care of them, also. Better than spending $100+ on a keyboard just to find you don't like the switches.

u/TheMoves · 2 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

If you're not using o-rings you could throw some on to reduce the chatter from the keys bottoming out, but it won't remove the signature click of the blue switches. I know you want to keep everything the same brand but you can do a lot better than Razer keyboards, I'd get a switch tester and figure out what you prefer, and then find something with those switches. If you like the clickiness of the blue switches but not the sound, I'm guessing you'll like the browns with some o-rings.

u/raunchyfartbomb · 2 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

I don't personally have the brown switches, I have the blue switches.

If you are interested, there are samplers available

I don't believe they are short, though. I wouldn't call it 'long', but that distance is subjective. I think the standard distance for mechanical is 2mm for activation and 4mm total travel. Here is an article for an introduction
That article also has a bunch of switch types, with travel noted.

Yeah just bought this one!

I was thinking about this since there are more options when it comes to MX Blue boards, My [test kit] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01G3BJOHO/) came with black Orings, but they don't seem to do much. Is there an Oring that would silence it more?

u/The_Daft · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

You should consider getting a switch tester first, you can pick them up for pretty cheap and it'll save you the hassle of ordering a board only to discover you dislike the switch.

Here's a good example, it's the one I ordered and have sitting on my desk. It's also a fun toy to have sitting around!

When I purchased my Lux with reds I bought this thing to try and help me decide what I wanted. It can’t really help you understand how often you are going to accidentally hit keys, but you can feel a red, blue and brown switch and the resistance each has as well as hear how loud they are. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01G3BJOHO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_SM17Ab0038WPY

Keyboard switches are mostly about personal preference. My preferred switch may be different than yours and that's totally okay!

My recommendation is to try the different switches for yourself. If you don't have access to keyboards to try with different switches, you can get a relatively inexpensive "tester" https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01G3BJOHO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_H1WWCb1E8ZHT9

Also you can ask about other peoples' opinions/preferences over at r/MechanicalKeyboards

u/Metaldrake · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Depends on what switches you want to try. Something basic with the 4 main switches costs $10, or if you want something more complete you can get this, or if you want to try Topre you can get this

u/_edge_case · 1 pointr/PUBATTLEGROUNDS

I have a couple, one of them is a 10 keyless Razer Blackwidow Tournament Chroma. There are so many to choose from.

If you are going to order a mechanical keyboard online by reading reviews or whatever, order a key tester from Amazon first and make sure you get the switches that you prefer.

Would this tester work?

Then that's fine to reuse. Membrane kbs are like 5-10 dollars, but cheap mechs can also be had for sub 40, e.g. this or this. I would recommend getting an mx key tester if you want to go down the mech rabbit hole, like this one, but if you want to stay budget you can just try out a friend's kb.

u/dawnbandit · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

I do! Get this https://www.amazon.com/Mechanical-keyboards-Switch-keyboard-Sampler/dp/B01G3BJOHO or the more expensive on https://www.amazon.com/Cherry-Switch-Tester-keyboard-Sampler/dp/B01GZHU1EG/

I used that and that's how I settled on my MX Brown switches, also linear switches are poop, IMO.

I can attest to the quality of Corsair's keyboards, I personally love the K70 and K95, and have heard well about the strafe. With the K95 I like the macro keys and I quite like setting each game to have its own color/macros with my setup. Though, it's definitely overpriced and I wouldn't recommend that model. I've also heard good things about cooler master, ducky, and das keyboards, but I'm not sure what they usually go for and the status of their rgb/customization. I just know that they make good mechanical boards.

Since you plan to be both gaming and typing, I strongly recommend getting a keyboard with MX Brown switches. The one you linked are MX reds. The key difference: red pushes down with linear force, which makes it feel more responsive when gaming. However when typing it can be annoying because it can sometimes be unclear if the press registered, depending on your typing style. Browns: have a force "bump" halfway through, where you can very clearly tell the input registered. Blues have this even more so, to the point where it's more of a click. General rule of thumb: reds for gaming, blues for typing, brown for both. This is not a hard rule. Therefore, I suggest getting something like this: LINK It's a key switch tester that will let you feel the difference yourself. Using a device like that, I decided on browns for myself. If you've got any questions, let me know. You can also post to /r/mechanicalkeyboards where you'll get plenty of help.

As for mice, there are a lot of factors. I'd suggest expanding on your desires/budget or making a detailed post over at /r/mousereview where they can help you out.

It can be overwhelming deciding on products like these, so the first step is to decide what you want the end result to be, and how much you're willing to spend.

u/Moxanthia · 1 pointr/osugame

I'm not sure what you mean by rgb since it's just a test kit, but this is the best one if you don't care about trying the less popular switches: https://www.amazon.com/AKWOX-Mechanical-keyboards-keyboard-Sampler/dp/B01G3BJOHO/ref=mp_s_a_1_12?keywords=cherry+mx+tester&qid=1573694040&sprefix=cherry+mx+test&sr=8-12

It comes with brown, red, blue, and black. Basically good for testing silvers too since reds are almost the same. If you end up liking the reds, you can just get silvers instead if they're a similar price.

Edit: If you meant one that comes with reds, greens, and blues, I could look for one but I don't know of a good one off the top of my head.

u/100gamer5 · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

it is all personal preference. Get a switch tester this one is Cherry MX's. this one is sold out right now but has just about every switch under the moon available.

u/Darkknight1874 · 1 pointr/buildapc

In general for gaming the preference seems to be reds. For typing the preference seems to be blues. I picked up blues for work after using browns because it was cheaper and just ended up going the same for home use because I was happy with them. If your not familiar with the differences I would recommend buying a tester to see what the difference is between switches as there are a lot of options.

Below is an example option. If you want to test more they make other options that cover even more switch choices.

u/doomneer · 1 pointr/buildapc

All of these answers are good, so I don't have much to add, but you can get one of these to test out the feel of the different keys (you also get a keycap puller for when you pull the trigger).

u/bdzz · 1 pointr/buildapc

Don't buy one without trying the different switches.

The most common ones (blue, black, red, brown) are all different (linear, tactile clicky, tactile non clicky etc.) and honestly nothing compared to a regular rubber dome keyboard.

You should order a sampler or just go to some stores to try them out

https://www.amazon.com/WASD-6-Key-Cherry-Switch-Tester/dp/B00AZQKCD4

https://www.amazon.com/Mechanical-keyboards-Switch-keyboard-Sampler/dp/B01G3BJOHO

u/OddFu7ure · 1 pointr/CruciblePlaybook

You can also get switch testers online if you don't want to go test them out in a store, but it's obviously not the same as getting to type on a full keyboard. Good luck and I hope you get a keyboard you love.

jenbanim is completely right if your gonna be spending $100 on a keyboard you gotta make sure you are comfortable with the switch you chose. https://www.amazon.com/Mechanical-keyboards-Switch-keyboard-Sampler/dp/B01G3BJOHO/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1493006904&sr=1-1&keywords=cherry+switch+tester that switch tester provides you with some basic switches but if your willing to go farther into depth and spend a little more id suggest https://www.amazon.com/Akwox-Cherry-Switch-keyboard-Sampler/dp/B01GZHU1EG/ref=sr_1_2?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1493006904&sr=1-2&keywords=cherry+switch+tester switches are entirely personal preference.

u/dogeatdawg · 1 pointr/buildapc

Cherry are the go to. Non-cherry switches will be different by brand. I know Razer has their own but have a different color scheme. They'll use similar descriptions though. The tactile bump they usually refer to are those blue/brown bumps partway down the keystroke.

If you can, head to a local store and see if they have a mechanical keyboard sitting out on display. It could help get a feel for at least one of the key types.

They also sell little tester sets that just give you a single sample of a few types of switches if you want to be sure before buying, but up to you if it's worth the cost.
