Excited about the concept, but not really thrilled with the execution here.

I envisioned a HTC-approved tracker kit that would come with various IRL objects that I could attach a tracker or controllers to, that could stand in for objects that the standard controllers don't emulate well. A kit with:

  • An assault rifle thing to slide your controllers into
  • An ergonomic handle (sword, bat, golf club, Mjölnir, etc.)
  • Gloves or Wrist straps (limb tracking, boxing, shield, etc.)
  • Foot straps (limb tracking, kicking, etc.)
  • General purpose clip (attach to keyboard, beer mug, etc.)

The thing is, the IRL objects don't have to look like what they emulate in game, they just have to feel like it. A simple handle could become a host of objects in game.
I would gladly pay $100-$200 for such a standardized kit.

A one-off handgun prop makes little sense when the standard vive controller feels like a gun already.

I had to look up the Sharpshooter, since I never saw or had one, and then pulled up an image of the Aim to look at them side by side and in my opinion man, but the Sharpshooter is the uglier of the two.

To my eye the Aim looks like a sleek, futuristic video game controller designed for VR—lacking any specific tactile features or details beyond the bare minimum required for game interactions, devs can have it stand in for a wide variety of devices & weapons without creating any cognitive dissonance as you see one thing and feel another. It won't feel exactly like any specific, real-world weapon, but any intentionally-designed in-game weapon could be made to match what you feel in your hands—not to mention non-gun items, such as musical instruments, magical artifacts, et cetera.

The Sharpshooter, on the other hand, at a glance appears to be a pump-action dildo for gun fetishists. And I don't mean that simply as a hyperbolic slight; this is just the sort of thing you see in a certain class of fetish-specific sex toys, where surface details of [whatever desired fetish] are recreated for the parts you hold in your hands and then an obvious dildo shape is stuck on the end. I can see how, if you have a thing for automatic firearms, having those sorts of details baked in to the controller probably make it seem better—but to me it reduces the scope and usefulness of the device, limiting its practical uses to games where I would be holding a present-day realistic automatic firearm.

That sort of specificity in controller design, while reasonable for something like Rock Band / Guitar Hero, soon leads to ridiculous ends like these controllers for Epic Mickey 2: Mickey's paintbrush and Oswald's clicker, or this fishing rod controller, or any of the plethora of Wii Sports accessories where you have a different plastic whatsit for every single game. I'd much rather have a multi-purpose device which can be re-skinned in VR than such a single-purpose device which will always feel to your hands like a present-day firearm.
