Based on the Asus GeForce GTX 670 DCII TOP (2GB) vs AMD Radeon HD 7970 (3GB)

All out of the box, mind you.

In Crysis 2, the 670 bitch slaps the 7970.
In Just Cause 2, the 670 bitch slaps the 7970.
In Shogun Total War 2, the 670 bitch slaps the 7970.
In Alien vs Predator, the 670 is getting bitch slapped by the 7970.
In Arkham City, the 670 gets a slap on the wrist by the 7970.
In Battlefield 3, the 670 bitch slaps the 7970.

Comparing the Nvidia Geforce GTX 670 (2GB),
The reference 670 wins in Crysis 2, Just Cause 2, Shogun 2, BF3, but loses in Aliens vs. Predator and Arkham City.

Note: Based on the Asus GeForce GTX 670 DCII TOP (2GB)
This is all based on the visual analysis presented by this website.

When one say comes "comes close to a 680". Really, there aren't that many differences between a 670 and a 680 other than the amount of CUDA cores the 680 has over the 670 and the clock speeds. It has been found to be roughly around 5% difference in performance- nothing overclocking can't solve.

This website can offer a better analysis between the 670, 680, 7950, and 7970. A quick recap of the performance of the 670 out of the box puts the 670 performing better than both the 7950 and the 7970. At overclocked levels, the 670 can beat out the 7950, but will ultimately lose against the 7970 OC. It is arguably debatable on whether or not the 7970 can beat the 680 at overclocked speeds- I'd say the 7970 has a better chance because the 680 has locked voltages.

For those wanting to buy this, consider newegg's tax vs this offer from amazon.

Should one buy this?
It ultimately depends on which is giving the better deal. I like to say that Nvidia has better driving support, but that doesn't mean to say that AMD doesn't impress me. I like their 7850s and such, so I'm not particularly biased for one company. I just go for what is giving me a deal at the time I purchase this electronics.

  • I'd pick another SSD brand. OCZ seems to have a high rate of failure due to crappy controllers. The price difference with other brands isn't too bad this days. I had to reinstall the firmware in my Vertex3 to stop having freezes.

  • I don't know much about FSP power supplies. You might want to consider more solid brands like Corsair, Seasonic, NZXT or Antec.

  • Currently Amazon is having a sale for an EVGA GTX 670 + Borderlands 2 for $359.99 (+$20 mail-in-rebate)

  • You could save a few bucks if you get this Lite-On DVD Burner. It's like $7 cheaper in Newegg and they have a coupon code for free shipping (~$5) if you buy it today or tomorrow. The only difference is that it doesn't have Lightscribe, which nobody uses anyways

  • For the Witcher 2, I get up to 60 FPS in max settings using a EVGA GTX 670 ftw with ubersampling and V-sync off and 30-40 FPS if ubersampling is on. I don't own a 7970 so can't compare by myself.

  • Since you are already spending a $50 in a keyboard, I'd buy a mechanical one. You can get a CM Quick Fire Pro in Newegg for $69.99 (+$10 mail-in rebate)

  • If you have a "claw" style grip, you may consider getting this mouse since you are a gamer (personal pick after having tried a bunch of them)

go have a look at pcccasegear.com

They are in Melbourne. Buy all your parts from there and buy your case from netplus or austin. Also if you are game get this

http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-Dual-Link-Graphics-02G-P4-2670-KR/dp/B007Z3HZIA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1345371656&sr=8-1&keywords=670

as it is able to be shipped internationally.

This SHOULD run it just fine.

Last question, not sure if it belongs here necessarily, but it's sort of related. Amazon has this- http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B007Z3HZIA/ref=sr_1_6_olp?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1344056778&sr=1-6&keywords=7970&condition=used.

It's from the amazon warehouse at 365$ no MIR, and eligible for a 30 day return. Would you trust this?

You don't need more than 8GB of RAM for gaming, and I was using an i5-2500k at 4.6GHz with my GTX 460. Still using the same CPU with my GTX 670, and my framerate doubled, if not more.

I'm not sure how you can say you can max everything, unless you're skimping on AA or you're at 720p:

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/519?vs=518

as the 470 can barely compete with a 570, and

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/831?vs=854

a 570 can barely compete with a 760.

At that point, you might as well go with a PS4, as it will look and run a lot smoother, especially for next gen games like BF4.

The 600 series still hasn't gone down in price, and a 760 is basically a 260$ 670:

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/830?vs=854

FOR 100$ less than a 670:
http://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-GDDR5-2GB-WINDFORCE-GV-N760OC-2GD-REV2-0/dp/B00DGM8B6O/

http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-Dual-Link-Graphics-02G-P4-2670-KR/dp/B007Z3HZIA/

And the 760 is less than 150$ more than a 470 at this point:
http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-PCI-Express-Graphics-012-P3-1470-AR/dp/B003EEMFTI/

Not to mention the increased efficiency and driver support of the newer series cards as well.

A 470 was decent a few years ago. It's okay now. Next gen, I'm not so sure. You can't compare it to a PS4, really.

Yeah I think you're right, it seems kind of like a rubber band effect. I've noticed the plateau before, and I've even noticed a slight boost in income before when I bump up my spending, just never seen such a drastic jump before. Then again, this was the first time I spent 13 million in less than 10 seconds 🔥💰

As far as population goes, it's probably less impressive than it sounds, I'm using a few mods. The one that allows you to purchase all 25 squares is nice so that you have plenty of room to expand; I also use PopBalanceMod which more accurately scales the number of Cims in a given building, based on its size. That means your low density houses are actually low density (4-6 Cims), and high density residential is actually high density (60-200 Cims depending on building size). Assuming you're able to deal with the extra traffic burden, this mod makes it much easier to pack people in.

This is actually my first city to break through the 250k barrier. It grew slowly up to 200k and I was stuck there for a bit, to make a long story short I did a lot of optimizations to my transportation infrastructure and since then it's been growing pretty quickly. I went from 200k to 600k much more quickly than 0 to 200k, I'm not really sure how I ended up with so much money but that probably helped..

As for performance, check if you have any buggy mods running. Assuming you have a reasonable GPU in there too you should be running smoothly. I'm on a retina iMac right now which is doing fine, occasionally I'll get slowdowns. My Windows machine just had an i5, 32GB ram, and this GPU, it was always silky smooth.

> Consoles are NOT just as vulnerable as PCs when it comes to hacking, because you can't run third party programs on them in order to cheat at games.

Putting windows on an Xbox

Linux on the PS4

Homebrew software on the 3DS

Yes you can. Someone always figures it out.

> run DOOM, yes. Can every gaming PC run DOOM? Not equivocally. Because different cards on the top end PCs (Vulcan for instance) are having trouble. Refute that.

Let's look at the hardware specs minimum. It's recommended that you need a GeForce GTX 670 at minimum to play. Okay, let's look at that price on amazon. $213 for a 670. Let's compare that the the PS4's GPU in terms of power. Higher numbers are better if you don't understand them.

GTX 670;

  • Base Clock: 915MHz
  • Boost Clock: 960MHz
  • Memory Clock: 6008MHz
  • Cuda Cores: 1344
  • Memory: 2048MB GDDR5 256bit

    PS4:

  • Base clock: 800 MHz
  • Cores: 1
  • Memory: 8GB GDDR5

And really for the PS4, that's all I could find that could be compared. Now you may have noticed "Oh we have more memory though so clearly your card is inferior".

Valid observation, but still not a strong point, because A) That's shared memory for the PS4. That's not just for graphics, that's for everything the PS4 does, OS, math, networking, sound, etc.. The 670 doesn't need that space, since all it does is run graphics, not an entire operating system. This means that the PS4 is constantly being weighted down by everything it has to do, when the 670's job is to do one thing. Graphics.

The 670 is more powerful than the PS4. That means that if the PS4 can run it, the 670 can run it. And guess what the kicker is? Already own a PC? Just plug that bad boy in and you're done. So it's even cheaper. I am more than happy to answer all your concerns.

And FYI, Vulcan is an API. Entirely a software thing. Nothing to do with hardware other than older cards will have to chug a bit harder.

    EDIT: Words
