They are rather large. Depending on your son's age, the head may just swallow his shoulders and give him an awkward, neckless, bobble-headed look. None of the available animals make a very good base for Sonic, either.

Just add some white fabric where the eyes go and black for the pupils (make sure there's some mesh somewhere in there for visibility, of course!) As for the mouth area, I don't really know. Leaving it clear might look awkward but it would allow him to breathe and speak more easily.
