I personally use them for suspension struts, sway bar links, and just really deep bolts that require nuts.
Suspension struts will usually have a Allen / Torx rod you have to hold while undoing the nut, same with sway bar links.
I don't really seem them as a gimmick they have come in handy a few times, and are usually much more stronger than a ratchet spanner.
The brand I have is BAHCO / S140T - it's 3/4 Drive I don't recommend it but I like it and it furfill my needs.
A brand I would Consider- https://www.amazon.com/GearWrench-893823-Drive-23-Piece-Ratchet/dp/B000RU73K8?th=1 - Gear Wrench has Metric SAE and has a more usable ratchet.
