I currently have this one

There is a newer model out there that has wireguard support that looks pretty nice and only $70. I have been debating on upgrading, but I dont have a wireguard server up.

That's a gl.inet MT300N. Their hardware comes with a mildly customized version of openwrt preinstalled. They make a few different ones with different capabilities, like PoE or a microSD slot. They also make a micro stick router, which is an interesting concept.

I put vanilla openWRT on mine, though. The MT300N actually has the capability to turn the power to the USB port on and off via GPIO, which I've used to power-cycle a shitty Verizon USB modem. I've used other models for other things where I would have used a WR703N in the past. Anywhere I need a little Linux box with wifi and a USB host port. The newer models have enough flash and RAM that you can install a decent variety of packages before worrying about running of space.

GL.iNet devices support using a USB 4G modem: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07712LKJM/

travel routers! you can mod these little devices to add obscenely big antennas if you like. they also can create a private lan, so your devices can communicate with each other faster and securely. for example, there's this router which could be modded with this antenna with this adapter. they offer lots of functionality that you would want.

Just wanted to mention the GL.iNet travel routers OpenWRT installed, maybe worth looking at?

I travel the US, a lot for work. I have gone through a few devices. This is the latest and works the best.

Key features:

  • wired nat. Works just like a normal router.

  • wireless bridge + nat. Let's you connect to wifi, Auth on the splash page and then still have everything connected.

  • built in openvpn client. Allows you to have everything behind it going over the VPN

My travel kit contains, this unit. A handful of cables USB & network, a chromecast.

When I get to my room, this comes out and gets setup. Prefer wired, otherwise I connect it to the wifi. Chromecast to the TV. Browse and surf like I'm at home.

T-Mobile is Notorious for traffic shaping. For this reason only I wonder if you’re being throttled that way.

Sign up for a free trial VPN (like NordVPN or PIA). Try to watch Hulu live on your computer... then try with the VPN app on and compare speeds.

If everything works out you should look into putting something between your google WiFi and MoFi device. So all the house traffic will go through the VPN.

I'm thinking about getting this mini router:

Small form factor with OpenWRT support and 128GB SD card slot.

Why not go external?

If you can make X run off just the second NIC then a router with built in vpn support should do the trick I would think.

If you want to go a little fancier:

You might even have a router already that can do this:

Get yourself a travel router like this:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07712LKJM

Make sure all your devices connect to it's wi-fi instead of the usual one (which is what the router itself will connect to, unless you have an Ethernet it can plug into).

If you're really paranoid it can be used to connect out via a VPN to really secure your traffic.
