First; I am so so sorry you had to go through that, and so thankful that those two people stepped in to help you. It's discouraging to hear about the large number of people who didn't step in, but unfortunately that's group mentality there. Each one of them was thinking "Surely someone else will help." Imbeciles.

Allow me to offer you some advice: someone has already mentioned pepper spray. This is an excellent idea! However, please do remember that pepper spray will effect not only the person you are spraying, but anyone around them and potentially you as well depending on the direction of the wind and the weather. Be prepared for this should you ever have to use it.

What I personally carry is something similar to this. It works as a perfectly functioning flashlight, but press the button a different direction, and it's a pretty forceful stun gun; enough to get the assailant to the ground and you to either run away, have someone step in to help, or call the cops. The downfall to this one is of course that the assailant has to be close enough to you for you to use this, and should they get a hand on you, you'll get it, too. So I recommend a training class if you do this.


Unfortunately, taking public transit always carries a risk, as there aren't enough security officials or law enforcement officials to patrol them on a regular basis, and they really depend on the decency of human beings, which I don't trust at all.
